our dear, dear, lifelong friends have just had their 5yo ds (turns 6yo tomorrow) diagnosed w/ leukemia. He's been a champ this past 2 weeks, just finished his first round of chemo, and his parents are the strongest people I've ever known!

anyway... I'm looking for a gift for when we make the trip out to visit (they're 11 hours away)... something different - he'll be LOADED up with gifts from family/friends for his bday and christmas.

Since he'll be in the hospital 8 months as of now, and he get LOTS of visitors (especially his little friends come in and they play Wii, etc), I was thinking of something he can share with all his visitors. Like the temporary tattoos (but I'm thinking he may not be able to use tattoos - I've read how the chemo can affect the skin and I'd hate to give something that could make him have a rash or he simply cannot use)... then I thought stickers... but I'd love a cool kid dispenser he keeps in his room, and can get his own when he wants, and offer to friends when they come, knim? The room isn't big, so it has to be kind of small. Money isn't an issue.

Any ideas? I posted this on another board, but thought I'd try here too.

Or any totally different ideas would be great too. He's getting so much from visitors, I thought it might make him feel good to be able to say "here, have this". Of course I'd send lots of extra refills of whatever I bring.

I was also thinking of one of those small play crane machines (grabber machines) - (we have one, but it never worked really well). You can put tiny toys or candy in it, and he can play with it all he wants, and can offer his visitors a play to get something for themselves. Anyone have one that works well and can recommend a brand?

Just trying to help pass his time, and not load him up w/ gifts he doesn't need, but of course I MUST get him a cool gift.

any help would be very appreciated!

Hi! I have a DD16 who's been in the hospital 7 weeks now. She has been happy using her laptop to get on Facebook every day. Of course, your friend's little boy would not be interested in that.

I was thinking though, how about a video game? He probably has a tv in his room there. Perhaps he'd like a gaming system to use? The hospital here has one that can be wheeled into the patient's rooms. If your friend's DS has access to something similar, maybe he would just like a new video game to use with that system (kids can get tired of playing the same games again and again that the hospital may provide).

You sound like a very thoughtful, loving friend.
