London....What Sights would you see??

Hi

As most of you know my DS (Sam aged 7) has just had a small operation. DH is working all over Easter amd older DS has a weeks Sea Cadet trip....SO I am planning to take Sam to London for a few days for some quality time alone with him!!

We are going to stay at my brothers in Essex and go and watch our beloved West Ham play....Sam also wants to the Queens House!!

Where else in LOndon would you take him to see/go??? Really want it to be special and I am quite good at 'tube' hopping but just a bit out of touch with the sights!!

Come On Friends....need you ideas!!

Science Museum has quite a few good things for kids and you could catch the Pixar exhibition

Or if he likes fish the London Aquarium

Of course there is theLondon Eye

Madame Tussauds? I haven't been for years (and we nearly got thrown out when I did go as my friends pretended to be wax works and then moved suddenly making people jump!)

I'm sure everyone else will be able to think of loads more

Hamleys on Regent Street.

7 or 8 floors of toys.

Can't think of anything better than doing this if I was still a kid - mind you, DH and I mostly always pop in to Hamleys for a look around when we go to London.

The open top double decker bus tours (a couple of different companies do this) their ticket booths are up and down Oxford Street and near Hyde Park. You can hop on and off over a 24 hour period and it also includes a trip on the Thames if you've got time in that 24 hour period! There are different routes to choose from and you get some great photos. The commentary is particularly useful and you can even get a child friendly recording of the commentary but ours were quite happy just looking around.

My two love the science museum, it's very hands on and has a great spot downstairs for the kids to really participate and if there are any good movies showing the IMAX cinema is definitely worth it.

The Natural History museum next door is also great fun and the transport museum in Covent Garden is good.

The London Aquarium and London Eye are right next to each other and are both good, you could also then take a boat ride from there over to Greenwich where you have the Maritime museum and the Cutty Sark.

London Duck Tours - amphibious vehicle takes you around the sights and then across the Thames. Never been but it looks fun

What about taking him to see a show. You can get some very reasonably priced tickets from the booths in London.

I liked the History museum does he like dinosaurs? They have an excellent exhibition.

Is the Pixar exhibit any good/worth the money? Me and Scott are going to London in a few weeks but are really limited in time.

Is there a big Disney store anywhere?

I took DD here a few years ago and we had a great time
The theme was the sea-side and they'd made a beach with sand, buckets and spades, Punch and Judy - the lot

Just check on the opening times though because it used to shut one day a week

Queenie, if I remember rightly, the Disney Store is in Oxford Street, almost directly opposite the Bond Street tube station.

England's Disney Gang, it's worth remembering that you can use Clubcard vouchers (if you have any) for Tussauds, and for some hotel accomodation in London.

Agree with whats already been said, the Science and Natural History museums, open top bus tour, Hamleys. Didn't personally like the London Eye (felt claustrophobic and travel sick ) but everyone else seems to really enjoy it. London Dungeon can be scary, especially the jack the Ripper bit!

Thank you for all your advice and details...its been so much help!!

The Science Museum is 100% on our agenda!!...we have checked out the website and the Pixar exhibition has made Sam really excitied!!

He wants to go on the London Eye mainly to tell his teacher he has been as she has been on it....can someone tell me how long it takes?? to be honest I am not sure if I will like it as I am a bit claustrophobic!!

History Museum is also an BIG option! and now he wants to find the biggest Disney Store as he is sure it will be in London!!

He has also mentioned today he wants to go to London Zoo!!...as he is staying in the daytime with my parents this week after his operation (me and DH are both at work!!) My dad has told him about this....last time he went is the 1950's so not sure if its still any good!

Sams big PASSION is FOOTBALL...we are going to watch West Ham on the Saturday (what a win last night for us!!).....Sam has asked if he can tour all the London Football Clubs Stadiums for one day........URMMM dont think so!!!! ...but if anyone knows of a Football based tour/visit/museum/guide/big shop please shout out!!

you mentioned you would be staying in Essex, don't know whether that would mean you would be using the train to get into London or not, depends where in Essex but if you are check out this link as there are loads of 2 for 1 offers when buying train tickets, including the science museum and London Zoo and yes several football stadiums .

The London Eye pods I thought were quite comfortable. It depends when you go on them during the day you may have to share with other people, we went at 5.00pm walked straight on (after buying the tickets of course!) and had a pod to ourselves so we could wander around with a 360 degree view. The trip lasts about 45 minutes so a loo visit first is recommended

If you can bear going to the other side, Chelsea do a stadium tour that I've heard very good things about. You don't need to be a Chelsea fan to go (although expect a gentle ribbing at the beginning ), and it's meant to be very interesting for football fans. Details are here .

The biggest Disney store is opposite Bond Street tube, there used to be one down the road from Hamleys, but it closed

You'll love the museums, make sure you visit the new children's area in the basement of Natural History, it's a lot of fun!
