London & Paris ABD Trip Advice

I'm not sure this is the advice you're looking for, but I'll take a shot. There's so much to see in Paris, unless you have a strong reason to want to stay in Near Disneyland Paris, I'd just take the train down for the day. I'm as big a Disney geek as anyone, but I wouldn't short Paris any more than 1 day for it. Spend the majority of time in DLP and go over to Hollywood Studios just long enough to do Crush's Coaster (otherwise it's not a good park) and then finish the evening in DLP.

Thank you so much for the input as a DVC member. We went to one of the seminars onboard the DCL but we didn't get much detail on how the points system works for ABD trips. How many points does it take for you to travel on ABD trip if you don't mind me asking? How was the med add-on? Did you do a trip report I could read up on? We really would love to do Monte Carlo, Rome and Venice as well.
I did one of the first Med cruise ABD add-ons in 2010, and I have a full Trip Report linked in my signature. You can check that out for a pretty good idea of what they are like and what they cover.

Sayhello

Thank you for the response. I was actually considering NY Hotel instead of the DLP Hotel so this was actually really helpful to me. Please feel free after you get back to let me know how the add on went at NY. Have fun and safe travels.

You're welcome. And thank you HarleyRose!

I'll chime in as a DVC member too. I have only done one other ABD but plan to do this one next week and another next summer. I have also cruised DCL a few times. But I cannot seem to part with my points at a non-DVC location. I know abdgeek, you said that's what you use them for, but I just can't seem to do it. I love WDW, DL, Vero, and Hilton Head too much and plan to try Aulani soon too. So my non-DVC location trips are paid for OOP.

On a different topic, can anyone give advice on phone and wifi usage for this trip? Is there free wifi available anywhere along the way?

As long as you buy direct from DVC, you can use your points to book WDW/DL, DCL, RCI--all resorts, ABD, and Concierge Collection(usually high end hotels). If you buy resale, you are limited to using your points on WDW/DL and some RCI.

Below is the link to the 2015 ABD Points Chart(I hope it works): http://advc.disney.go.com/media/dvc...charts/2015/adventuresbydisney/2015abd618.pdf

The points are based on double occupancy and I have to pay the 40% single supplement for ABD when I travel and the almost 100% DCL single supplement when I cruise--it used to be about 40% and I'm really bummed that it went up. As you can see, some of the trips require a lot of points, so if you're planning on getting a 160 point contract you probably would need to pay OOP because you won't have enough points even if you used three years worth of points which you can do(I started out with 160 points and soon realized that was not enough for what I wanted to do once I saw the ABD point charts--it's a lot less points to take the cruises). On each of the ABD trips I've been on, there were usually a couple of DVC members.

The Med Cruise Add-on was the first ABD I did in 2011. I loved it and was hooked from that point on. It was also my first Med Cruise. I liked that I saw more than I could have seen on my own and later realized that the ABD combined about 2-3 excursions a day. What I didn't realize was that I could not see the Med in one cruise. I will be going back for the third time this summer to finally see the rest of the things I still haven't seen. My second DCL Med Cruise, which was 12 nights, I didn't do ABD because the first seven days was the same thing I had done before. I just did the DCL excursions and let me say, there is a big difference in what goes on with ABD vs a regular excursion. ABD has a content expert on the tour, DCL has a third party person who takes you to the site but has limited knowledge of the site.

Unfortunately, I haven't done any trip reports because everyone else has done them. If you choose to do the Med Cruise, you should be able to see Monte Carlo, Rome and Venice. We literally did Rome in a day with the ABD add-on(didn't see David--Academia closed on Monday which was when we were in Rome and Pantheon--saw everything else). I loved Monte Carlo and we had lunch overlooking the ocean at the Fairmont Monte Carlo and had time to shop or go in the Casino. The bus also took us on part of the Grand Prix and we saw the markings on the road where the cars line up.

When I purchased DVC, I did so to go everywhere Disney went--not just to go to WDW. Right now, that's six continents and I'm happily vacationing my way through all of them. Good luck in your decision.

Thank you for spreadsheet about ABD points. We thought the 160 package was good. I guess that just means more cruising for our points. We completely agree with you on trying everything disney. I think we would get bored just doing WDW/Aulani every other year and since we live in California not much point to use them here. I love the idea of getting Rome done in a day. Monte Carlo sounds like a lovely day as well. I'm sad Venice got taken off the DCL itinerary for 2015 but hopefully it will be back later like the Baltic itinerary.

Thanks for the advice about the Hollywood Studios park. I got the impression it was similar to the one in Orlando and I hated that park so much as a kid. Tried to give it another shot when I went back as adult and I still hated it. So I just thought we would just go there long enough to take a few photos and buy a souvenir or two. I would prefer to stay closer to the parks just to have my option to watch the Dream show again in case of bad weather VIP Fastpasses and shop at Downtown Disney. I will definitely give it some thought now if we decided to see Versailles.

By the way I'm loving your trip report on China it looks absolutely amazing. Holding a panda is on my bucket list.

Hello Harley Rose,

Thank you for your response & I was wrong in my assumption.

Now Plan ahead & enjoy your trip.

The best place to obtain Euro money ( London uses £ Sterling )

is in your Local Bank . Or use your Main Credit Card .. There will be a

currency fee ADDED on by your Bank on any transactions made OUTSIDE

of USA.

Next best is your ATM card ( Debit Card ) you will / should have your

PIN numbers for this.

DO NOT CHANGE MONEY at a Currency Booth

Change money INSIDE a BANK.

Euros are just like USA money

1 cent, 2 cent 5 cent , 10 ,20, 50 cent 1 euro coin , 2 Euro Coin

5 Euro Note , 10 Euro & 20 Euro & 50 Euro Notes .

There are 100 Euro and others notes BUT YOU would find it hard to get people to take them

Paris is a wonderful City to see & go & sit back and wonder at Past

History that has taken place at Versailles & Paris

The best place to get Euros is not at your local bank, which likely will have to order them. Unless you need Euros in advance, just get them at an ATM at your arrival airport.

Many credit cards do not add foreign transaction fees. Get one which doesn't (Capitol One, Chase UA card, etc.) for your trip.

Going to chime in as a DVC member for a moment because I'm not sure if this was mentioned at all. If you only have enough points to do 1 person on a ABD or Cruise, you are able to pay for the other in cash if you wanted.

This is one way we have actually saved some cash and points at the same time. We have 4 of us in our family and 400 points total a year, but we love to cruise as well as take family down to the parks. The catch is if you are doing 2 rooms you need to use points for 1 person in each room at least. So for our Alaskan cruise I only had enough points to pay for 2 ppl in an inside room and 1 person in a verandah room, so the last person we paid in cash.

So if you were to do an ABD, you could use your points for 1 person if you had enough and then do cash for the second one. Personally I'm not sure if the ABD is worth the cost using your points, but if you find that it helps you get on that trip then go for it!! I'm sure you will make it up in the years to come...and believe me I think DVC is totally worth it.

We are so tempted now with the Polynesian resort getting villas to buy more, but I think 400 at Animal Kingdom might be our limit! We absolutely love our home resort and have been able to take my entire family there twice now(well the second time is coming this winter) DVC usually has some great incentives for buying if you watch out for them, and I would be sure to wait for a resort that you will like to own in. You get an 11 month window vs a 6 or 7 month window...can't remember which it is. http://dvcnews.com/index.php/dvc-program-51703/financial-75803/pricing-a-promotions-52175 This is a good page to keep an eye on the current promotions.

Another DVC member here. We have 1100 (soon to be 1200 I hope) points but have never used them for ABD or DCL. That does not mean we never will though. Of those points only 200 would not be able to used for DCL or ABD since they were bought resale after the changes. The rest were direct or resale but grandfathered in prior to resale restrictions. We have rented out points to friends to help pay for an ABD trip though. We will likely continue to do that in the future if we could just get out of "borrow" mode LOL Monetarily it works out much better.

For example 1 adult for the China ABD is 1027 DVC points or $7599. I could rent out those 1000 points to friends or through David's DVC rentals and have between $10,270 - $11,297. That pays for the trip for one adult with money left over.

Thanks for great DVC advice. I love hearing everyone's input on these subjects so keep em coming.

This may sound like a odd questions but do the hotels ABD and DLP hotels have 24hr room service? Also when we stay at the Foxhills Hotel is there time to use the spa at all?

We did this tour two years ago - there wasn't much free time at Foxhills. Lovely surroundings and DH would have loved to have played golf.

I know many people love Versailles but I know personally I would rather visit Place du Tertre, Moulin Rouge, and the Opera house. I would love to do some shopping in my free time at the Galeries Lafayette or Les Halles as well. I will for sure check out your other suggestions. Any other helpful tips would be appreciated.

Hi Harley Rose,

I have been on the London / Paris Adventure twice and neither time have I visited Versailles.

On both trips, there was things I wanted to see more. As the trip to Versailles takes up most of the day with travel to and from, the tour, lunch a bike ride etc, it leaves very little on your own time. I wanted more on my own time, so we chose to do that instead.

There is no refund should you choose to nat participate in any aspect of the Adventure.

There is the possibility of adding Disneyland Paris to the end of your Adventure.

If you have any questions regarding this adventure or any of the others, please let me know. I'm happy to assist.

Thank you,
Kevin@Dreams UnlimitedTravel

I would love to get idea from everyone on regular trips vs adult only trips. Is there anything that makes them different? Do you prefer no kids? Does the itineraries get changed at all?

HarleyRose- our first ABD was virtually an adult only trip - our only child almost 19 year old, and a very well behaved brother & sister. Our second ABD had about 14 children. I have to say, it brought a different vibe to the trip. Maybe because our daughter is now grown, but it was fun to see some of the sights "through the eyes of a child". The itineraries pretty much stay the same - some small activities are added for the junior adventurers.

As for Versailles - I must say - that was a major highlight of the tour for me! Wouldn't have missed it for the world! :-)

I'm glad the itineraries stayed the same no matter what type of trip you book. Thanks for comparing the trips for me. Do you know if the still do the love lock on the bridge over by Notre Dame?

All of my ABD trips have been regular trips and I didn't find having kids on the trip a problem. What you find is that the kids hang together and the adults hang together. Most of the kids are well traveled, so you're dealing with more mature kids. As OP said, it is fun to see the trip through the eyes of the kids. They keep the atmosphere light and fun. However, if you want a kid free zone, do the adults only one. I want to say that sayhello does them(but don't quote me on that), so hopefully she will post soon.

Our trip had "on your own" time after we arrived at Notre Dame so you could do the love lock bridge on your own. I don't know if it is "included" in the tour now. I know a couple on our trip had a hard time finding a shop to purchase a lock! Lol. We didn't do it ourselves. Told my DH that means we must return! ;-)

Just got back yesterday...we were given the chance to go look at the love lock bridge, but I had read that on previous trips they had done a love lock. We did not have that opportunity. Our guide told us that the bridge is so heavy that part of it has already collapsed and they're thinking of taking all of the locks off.

The add on at NY was good. I got great service there. But I'm very glad that I didn't spend the extra $$ to stay at the Disneyland Hotel. The two night stay was enough to get what I wanted to done in both parks as well as check out the other hotels and shop at the Disney Village. Quite honestly I was a bit disappointed in the whole park and resort area. It seemed very run down and in need of a lot of TLC. But I'm very glad I went.

This may sound like a odd questions but do the hotels ABD and DLP hotels have 24hr room service? Also when we stay at the Foxhills Hotel is there time to use the spa at all?

I"m pretty sure the Paris hotel and the Hotel NY had room service menus, but I don't know if they were 24 hour. And I know one of the ladies in the group made a spa appointment at Foxhills for the evening when we returned from Windsor.

I would love to get idea from everyone on regular trips vs adult only trips. Is there anything that makes them different? Do you prefer no kids? Does the itineraries get changed at all?

The trip I was on was a regular one. We had 18 adults and 12 kids. I was the only solo traveler. There were 2 times where we had "kid-free" time, dinner the first night at Foxhills and at the Louvre when the kids had a scavenger hunt. I felt that the kids added something to the group and made it fun.

I'll be happy to answer any other questions now that I'm back! It was a wonderful trip and I'm very glad I did it. :goodvibes
