If I might hop in here
..
.. my mother and I were lucky enough to visit England in September 2001. (day before 9/11) We did just as you are thinking and stayed the entire time based in London. Did day trips. I cant recommend the place we lodged, but I can give some day trip advice. We took day train trips to Bath, Salisbury and the Cotswolds. In Bath we did the Hop-on-off bus, lunch at a great place and shopped. Oh yeah we also took MANY pix. In Salisbury we walked into town. We had picked to go on a weekend because they were running an open-air market. We also visited the church. We also took loads pix. In the Cotswolds we hired a private tour guide for the day. He would drive us to a town telling us a bit on the area then drop us off to walk thought the town. Money well spent IMHO. And more pix. Seven and a half weeks until Dubin for my 50th birthday ! ! Used Tripadvisor for our hotel this time. I've only used it once for a trip to Santa Barbara. But the hotel that we found was just great. Love that site....
