When does "Old South" end and "New South" begin?

All of you whose images of the South are negative----Is that how you still perceive us?

to me, the old south ended w/ the end of slavery, which might not be technically true or what you're looking for, but as a NYer, it's just the image that pops in my mind.

yes, the images of the "old south" to me are pretty negative, the images of the "new" south to me are... disney, florida beaches and beautiful, historic cities - which I haven't even been to, but I think of say Charleston, Savannah, etc, and would like to visit, and would feel like I would enjoy it and see lots of southern charm. I don't think of the old south when I visit the south now though, unless I see a rebel flag flying or on the back of a pickup truck (but, we have some of the pickup trucks w/ the rebel flag in NY too - but more rarely).

So again to the OP - who are you trying to 'reach' w/ your sign? what's your business going to be?

Well I guess I'm just a racist little business owner now aren't I?

The reason I blocked the other poster is because this is the internet, I know you are going to have people who want to do nothing but wine and drag negative stuff into it, had she presented it in a way like other posters did where they said it honestly reminded them of that era, fine, whatever but it was this diatribe about her/his family and just drama drama drama and I figured she/he would be one of those posters who wanted to come back and forth and fight everyone who said anything to differ with her. It's the internet, I can't tell the emotion behind what she typed but frankly I don't care because I already specifically said I wasn't looking for those negative images. Now when I open my thread I can simply scroll right passed her threads without wasting time reading them, along with other people who might have replied that I've added to the ignore list-it's there for a reason so I use it.

As for marketing something racists, should I run right over to epcot right this minute and demand they rip out the world showcase? I mean they are marketing that and there are some pretty negative issues there-germany had the holocaust, japan bombed us, we bombed japan...Geez I mean I guess disney only wants blonde hair blue eyed bomb tossing patrons in epcot... I didn't get the memo and I was there just yesterday.

Thanks to everyone who understood what I where I was going and gave some good feedback, it seems like the idea's I have are the same as a lot of people's, especially the magnolia flower!

From my perspective, you're the one that's creating drama, not her.

I don't hate the south, but I agree with Pink Cupcake. My family is from SC. My mom moved to NY the week after I was born. (1968) I spent many summers in SC. When I think of the south, the first two things that come to mind are family and church.

Yes I am.

Please don’t speak for me or my grandparents. I guess we are not included in that “most”.

Where did I say I hate The South? I was asked what “What kind of images come to mind when I ask to think about the old south?” I answered the question truthfully. And yes, my grandparents were hated. My grandfather especially told humiliating stories that I will NEVER forget. We are talking about The South of yesteryear. It was not a nice time for some:guilty:

No it wasn't but does it help anything to bring up those negative images? I hate that your grandparents went through those times. I am sure it was horrible.

I wasn't speaking for you or your grandparents. I was speaking for the people I talk to on a daily basis and for people that have spoken at the college I work for. They don't forget the things that happened but they also remember how much more there is to the south than those things. And they also realise that it was happening all over the country. Many of the speakers have spoken of why its not beneficial to anyone to continue the constant negative pictures of the south. Why we need to remember but not harp on the things that went on. We want to learn from our history, not wallow in it. (not saying you are, just repeating their words)

If you do not hate the south, why not mention some positive pictures as well as the negative ones

The OP was specific in what she was asking for, I just don't see where you thought the things you described helped her in anyway.

Japan attacked us with kamikaze pilots, they didn't exactly bomb us they way we bombed them.

You're the one creating drama - especially calling someone's feelings about their family 'drama'. How dare someone be upset over the way their ancestors were treated, right?

I mean, after all, those slaves were lucky to be here, right? They had steady work, after all! And they were freed ages ago, so why should anyone complain today, right? And heck, even when they had separate facilities for 'colored' folk, they still had the facilities to use, so why complain? Gosh, those ex-slaves and their descendants - just DRAMA DRAMA DRAMA. :headache:

You're the one who is acting like those stereotypical internet people you are talking about.

I also think its AWESOME that you keep touting yourself as a business owner yet you have to go to The Dis to get ideas for a client. Does everyone who helped you out get a pay cut? :rotfl:

I'd love to know what you're trying to market so I know to boycott it because of YOUR attitude, not what your customer is wanting you to sell.

From my perspective, you're the one that's creating drama, not her.

I totally disagree with you. The OP asked for Old South marketing images. Common sense would tell you that negative stereotypes were not what they would be interested in reading. Everyone knows that there are good and bad memories of everything. If certain posters want to rant on their negative images of the south then they should just start their own thread. That way they wouldn't be trying to hijack the intent of this thread.

She asked a specific question but was given an answer that was in no way what she asked for.

Which never happens on a forum on the internet? Much less this one?

All the OP had to do was ignore the post from the get-go - and not announce it. Once someone makes a post on a message board you're going to get a ton of different answers - its the way things work.

Once the OP announced they were going to ignore it and then continued to comment on it - that created drama.

And then the OP went on a rant, which makes her look like a drama llama. All she had to do was ignore the post.

You do know that slave owners were in no way limited to the south, right? You do know that there were slave traders from all over the country, right?
You do know that the seperation of the races was all over the country, right?

Why does it have to be like this?

Everytime the south is mentioned on the DIS it turns into a debate. The south is NOT just about slaves and racism and rebel flags.

The old south was full of strong people who built their homes and thier farms from the ground up. The old south was full of people who would do whatever was necessary to help their neighbor. People that could face anything and work through it. The kind of people that face a disaster by pulling themselves up by their bootstraps and getting things done.

The south is full of beauty and slower living. Azealas, dogwoods, magnolias and crepe myrtle. Sweet tea, fried chicken and back yard bbqs. Church, friends and family.

All of this is part of the old south, the new south and anything in between.

I've worked in marketing since dinosaurs roamed the earth and it's really important to listen with respect to any feedback you get on logos, marketing themes, etc. It may be that you determine the feedback isn't pertinent. It also may be that it points out a direction you should avoid, take caution, etc. I've been on both sides of this -- gave feedback that wasn't listened to and the piece bombed and didn't get feedback when I should have.

Take plenty of time designing a logo b/c you're stuck with it for a long and time and build (or should) the rest of your marketing materials around it. The organization I work for took almost six months on our current one -- drove our designer crazy, but I don't think we'll be changing it any time soon.

We want to learn from our history, not wallow in it. (not saying you are, just repeating their words)

That is a great quote. (Whoever said it!)

I just don't see where you thought the things you described helped her in anyway.

Exactly.

NOBODY said that.

Since someone mentioned Epcot and I already brought up Germany (which is where my ancestors are from).. I've never seen any signs there that say "We apologize for Hitler". There are so many other components of that country, just as there are other components of the South. I just don't understand this board sometimes.

I am sorry you feel that way but I think the OP was very specific in that she (or he) was not looking for images of that part of history.

OP, I think of gorgeous oak trees, magnolias, sweet tea, and rockers on large wrap around porches. I also think of bayous and beautiful sandy white gulf beaches.

I don't think you can have one without mentionning the other, and it wasn't limited to a certain part of history. It's important to tell the truth!

Why? Because the OP couldn't just ignore - they ignored and continued to comment to the point of stating that the person's comments were DRAMA DRAMA DRAMA. Even stated that their family history was DRAMA DRAMA DRAMA.

If you read my first post in this thread replying to the person's 'diatribe', I clearly stated that racism was everywhere and their examples were not limited to just the South.

The point is, the OP could have just ignored the person WITHOUT COMMENT. It was the OPs comments and their continuing comments that caused the drama she accused that poster of causing.

And no, I wouldn't even be commenting if the OP hadn't said "whatever but it was this diatribe about her/his family and just drama drama drama." (That is where I got talk of slave ancestors = DRAMA DRAMA DRAMA.)

I would just like to say that I think of roaches when I think of the South because they are all over the place down here.:lmao:

Really?! I'm in a southern state and I haven't seen a single roach! Every other kind of freaky, nasty bug, yes and they are BIG down here but no roaches.

I've seen huge palmetto(sp?) roaches, German roaches and another variety here in Chattanooga. The palmetto ones crunch really loud when you step on them.:thumbsup2

What do I think of when I hear 'Old South'?
Strange fruit.

Ok I'm going to bite... strange fruit...? Like pineapples are strange with thier weird skin and peaches are fuzzy and that's weird, or is there something I'm missing?
