Wanting my kids to do this on our upcoming trip, but-- how do you carry around 100 pennies 200 quarters, divided between two kids, and not have to fumble all over the place??? I've read about using the mini M&M tubes, and that's great. But do you use one (or more) for pennies and one (or more) for quarters?? I know I could use different color tubes, but four different color tubes (2 pennies, 2 quarters) seems a bit unwieldy. Because, heaven forbid I get one child's allotment mixed up with another's-- KWIM??? Any tips??

Well I am guessing if you are planning on doing that many, you will be there more than one day?

I suggest bringing a big ziplock of all your pennies and another ziplock of your quarters. Each night before you go to bed (or before you go to the park in the morning) fill up your new M&M container with the next day's amount. You could do 3 tubes (one for each girl and then an extra) and fill it like this: 2Qs 1P 2Qs 1P 2Qa 1P etc etc so they are just ready to go.

I also highly doubt you will use that many and find all the locations, but good luck to you! go to www.presspennies.com for a list of all the locations and types.

Good luck!!!

Perfect idea! Thank you. But I figure that if one machine has 3 images, and we'll be there for 6 days, it's possible to accumulate quite a few. If not, the worst thing that can happen is I have it all set for our next trip! :goodvibes

Very true, I forgot about that. We usually didnt get all three images.

Did you know they have quarter machiens too? Except they are $1.50 instead of $.75

They also have cute little penny pressed books that are $6.50 (i believe)

Way ahead of you... I'M going to collect those!! :lmao:

We used M&M containers to store the money in. We layered two quarters, then a penny. Each of our kids was allowed one (M&M) container of pressed pennies a day. We just stored the pressed ones in a special pocket in my bag until we got back to the room, then put them in our books.

Just make sure you use pennies that are in decent condition. Ones that are dirty don't show the designs as well as ones that are cleaner.

How important is it to the pressing process to use older pennies (pre 1986 or something?)

We are up here in Canada so we'll be "hard pressed"(ha) for us to collect pennies with right years on them. Hoping to have enough ready for the girls to clean before we go in December. (Telling them only 5 days before we leave.)

After a certain year (1986 sounds about right) they started using a different material in their pennies that make it so their shine doesnt last as long once they are pressed.

But i do have some from all years and they look fine, although I am trying to do the older years when possible.

I found the best way to clean pennies was with ketchup. I tried a bunch of different things ppl suggested but when i put all the pennies in a bowl and smothered them in ketchup and left for about a day, they came out looking like the newer ones. (and trust me, i had some DIIRTTYY pennies in there! lol)

One other tip: for the machines where you press a button and it makes your penny, make sure the head is facing right. For machines where you turn the handle, make sure the head of your penny is facing left. The machines will press on either side, but the images seem to be clearer when they are pressed on the heads side of the penny.

They do have cute pressed penny books. One has a Mickey theme with Mickey ears forming the top and the other is Tink. In that book are also places to put the pressed quarters.:thumbs up. They have them in just about every store near the registers.

I've found that the mini M&M tubes worked best for holding the quarters/pennies. As a PP said, we stack them 2 quarters/1penny, 2quarters/1penny... Beware that all these coins do weigh a lot and will be heavy in your purse/bag.

If you want to get fancy, you can make labels for the M&M tubes. There are several designers (Donatalie is great!) that make pressed penny tube labels with names and characters on them. Check out them in the Creative DISigns forum. they are very cute!!

Only one word of warning...may be totally unnecessary, BUT when I took a roll of quarters through security at the airport, it TOTALLY freaked out security. They had to look through my bag and had a good laugh among themselves when they discovered the roll of coins. Not sure WHAT they thought it was...:confused3

A word of warning about those - my sister got one on our last trip and she HAD to fill every single space in the book!

We have 4 kids going, and each kid will get (per day) a film container with layers of 2Q, 1P. The containers are labeled and each kid will carry his/her own!

Does anyone have an idea as to how many pennies each book holds? Just curious! :rolleyes1

I looked at a couple of books on ebay, just to get an idea, and there was a Tinkerbell one that held 48 pennies and a Sorceror Mickey book that held 64.

And added about 30 pressed pennies to my collection. The list someone mentioned in a previous post (Pennypresses.com?) is pretty up to date, with a few machines being absent in a few locations (possibly being changed), and a few different characters at some. I started with maybe ten quarters to use, but I usually ask the CMs to buy quarters at the pressed penny location ($3-$5), with no problem. That way I only carry the mint quarters I use for the quarter presses and pennies, and not the added weight of extra quarters. Even with all the time I had, I still didn't get to about 3 other locations which were out of the way (hotels), so I am saving those pennies for my next trip back in September!
Have fun looking 4 pennies!:hippie:

Thanks so much! Just trying to get an idea of how many we will let each kid do! Definately not 48 or 64! :rotfl:
