Just back from a week in LA - 3 days @ Loews Santa Monica, 4 days @ Anaheim Marriott for a cheerleading competition.

I can honestly say that we had much, much better service at the Marriott - even with the staff tearing their hair out with the entire place full of cheerleaders - than at the 4.75 * (don't forget that .75 as the reservationist reminded us) Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel. And absolutely better pampering at the PBH (and RPR!).

Good things - Platinum upgrade to a ocean front suite was beautiful, although the suite was very small and did not sleep 8 as promised (the sofa was not a sofa-bed as we were told). So, not only was the suite small, but we had to stuff rollaways in there to accomodate the other two kids. It was so tight , the room service guy had a hard time even rolling in the table when we ordered dinner one night. But then again, I have been spoiled with the Villa Suite :teeth: However, the master bedroom was huge and the view of the Pacific was to die for.

Bad things:
They kept checking us out, even though our confirmation clearly stated that we were staying for 3 days. So, everytime we returned from the beach or dinner, we would be locked out of the back (beach) entrance to the hotel. This meant walking all the way around the block to the front entrance to have our keys reactivated. But the bad service (and one I never experienced at the Universal Loews hotels) is that they had the nerve to tell us that it was our fault - that if you put the hotel key next to a credit card, it would deactivate it. UH...No...the keys were in the cardboard sleeves and nowhere near the credit cards. And only the suite keys would be deactivated, not the attached double bedroom.

The shower leaked. And Leaked. And Leaked. It would completely soak through the bath mat and a couple of towels just for a short shower. We went through many, many towels :goodvibes And forget getting it fixed. It got to the point that I was beginning to want Dave the Plumber at PBH (the one that told me you weren't allowed to flush toilet paper down the toilets at PBH on another thread). And they couldn't move us as the hotel was full with big shots - Nick Kid's Choice Awards people were staying there and having breakfasts/meetings/etc. But alas, much to my daughter's dismay - no Timberlake sitings.

And just lots and lots of little things that made me really notice the lack of caring on their part. Maybe it was because they were catering to a hotel full of celebrities and little peons like us didn't really matter. But it made me really appreciate the above and beyond service that the Loews "theme park" hotels give their customers over the 4.75 star Loews Santa Monica.

So, kudos again to the great customer service at the Loews "themepark" hotels. You can teach a lot to your California brethren about how to treat the average family :goodvibes

So your Platinum didn't mean squat? That's too bad. Well welcome home!

Sorry to hear that!

I live in Southern California and I was going to plan a weekend trip to either Loews Santa Monica or Loews San Diego to earn stays on my Loews card, but I think I will skip Santa Monica.

I can't stand bad service, especially if there is an actual problem.

Hope you still had a good time while you were here!!

It did get us the suite upgrade. And the suite was gorgeous with an ocean front view out of the master bedroom and pool view out of the parlor and 2nd bedroom. And we did get our welcome gift. But that is all it got us.

Last couple of times we checked into PBH, they told us to wait for a second after we checked in. Then the manager came out, greeted us and thanked us for being Platinum and choosing a Loews Hotel. Little things like that at the Universal hotels really make you feel pampered.

When you have to keep getting your keys reactivated and then told it was your fault makes you kind of feel like they didn't want you there. If they needed the room, they could have just told us instead of continuing to lock us out with our stuff all in there :goodvibes

Oh...and for anybody complaining about the $12.00 parking fee @ Universal - it was $30.00 :scared1: per night at Santa Monica and $20.00 per night at the Anaheim Marriott.

The hotel is lovely, the beach gorgeous, and only 2 blocks from the pier is wonderful.

I can't say the service was absolutely horrible, but just lots of little stuff that on its own I would just laugh at, but after awhile it just became irritating.

When we entered the suite and noticed that we did not have sleeping accommodations for all 8 people, I called down to the front desk to see what we could do. The lady's actual snotty, condescending response was "I am sorry you were told that, it was wrong, but what do you want us to do? We can't move you as the hotel is full." Perhaps fix it somehow? I felt almost sheepish suggesting rollaways. A point in their favor - no charge for the extra rollaways. But now, having our 10 year old in our master bedroom with us, did put a little bit of a bummer on the romantic beach vacation we were envisioning :teeth:

The shower was irritating, but we just blanketed the floor with towels. If they wanted their marble floors ruined, then so be it. The room service menu prices were all off by 50 cents (bagel) to a few dollars (lunches). Not a big deal of course, but just another irritant when your room service bill (for 8 people) is $30.00 more than what you expected. But what was irritating was the lack of apologies for the menus being out of date and being made to feel like if you had to mention it, you shouldn't be staying at the 4.75 star and diamond hotel. I didn't complain - just mentioned it to room service the next day when I ordered breakfast that did they know their room menus were out of date. I just have never really felt talked down to so much. And we have stayed in our share of 4 and 5 star hotels.

And not the Loews fault - but it is located in what must be the prime homeless district. I walked the two blocks to a pier bakery one morning to fetch donuts and had to step over everybody sleeping, mumbling, etc. On arrival, when we pulled up to the hotel, one gentleman was urinating on the wall. So, if anybody is uncomfortable with this, then you should plan on staying in the hotel and/or going out the back door, across the back street to the beach.

We did have a great time though. The beach is absolutely gorgeous. The pier was lots of fun. We ate at Bubba Gumps. Eating shrimp while watching the sun set on the Pacific gave it a whole different atmosphere than at City Walk.

What was fun to watch is that right behind the Loews on the beach is the "muscle" area. So, every morning we would sit with our coffee on the master bedroom bedroom and watch the "beautiful" people be put through their workouts with their personal trainers.

So, to make a long novel short, I wouldn't completely dismiss the hotel. It certainly had its great points. It is just that the customer service, in our experience, has been much better at the Universal hotels than at one of their flagship beach hotels. But that said, we would probably return just for the beach, restaurant and pier access. We just won't expect the kind of service we are accustomed to with other 4/5 star hotels and the Loews PBH. And if this was just a fluke stay, then we will be pleasantly surprised.

Anyway, I'll stop now as this is really getting to the point that it needs to be moved to the SoCal boards. But I just wanted to compare another Loews Hotel to the Universal Loews.

Sounds like you were in the same room as we were. The shower leaked too!!! Did you have the vaulted ceilings? Our couch wasn't a pullout either but we knew that in advance.

The customer service was good when we were there. They kept bringing us cookies and milk because there were no teen amenities. It must be going down hill now that Paul LeClerc is at the PBH instead as the GM.

And ya, the parking prices are crazy there. Even worse in San Francisco.

Thanks for the additional information. I think we'll still with San Diego for the simple fact we've been to the pier several times. And we love San Diego.

Are you going to stay at the Loews Coronado?

Yes. Have you been to that location?

No but I called there to see if there were any upgrades available for when we will be in California and there was nothing, so we're not going to stay there.

We're not going until July, but I don't expect any upgrades because I'm only Lowes Blue. I always forget to put my lowes # when I make a ressie :headache: . But for my stay at Universal in November & this stay, I have remembered to put my # in the reservation :thumbsup2 .

Bummer, goof! Sounds like there were lots of little things that just added up. Did you get a post-stay survey yet?

Gee, if they added a little boost to their customer service, they might get that extra .25 star! :rotfl2:

Crossing my fingers for a good stay at PBH.
