We are driving to port. When we check our luggage at the DCL terminal, can we lock it or does DCL prefer it to be unlocked? Anyone know? Can't find info. in my docs and was wondering if DCL was like the airlines in that they wold prefer unlocked luggage for security reasons. Thanks.

Take some of the tie wraps that need to be cut off and ask before you put them on. I think I had them on mine when we were dropped off, but cannot remember.

I don't know the official answer. But in today's security environment, I would not lock the luggage.

It's my understanding (and my hope) that DCL Security x-rays all luggage. If they see something that they can't figure out from the x-ray image, they should be able to get in without having to break the locks.

Just as when you're flying, you may want to "lock" your luggage with cable ties (which are available wherever electric wiring supplies are sold). Security can cut these if they have to. Just make sure you have finger nail clippers in your carry-on, so that you can remove the cable ties when you want to open your luggage.

We use the zip ties and you can even get them in colors like lime green now. Not only is our luggage secure but it is an easy way to spot it as well.::yes::

I have TSA locks...they are combination locks with a keep that TSA has...you can get them at brookstone. The cool thing is is that if for any reason TSA cuts them off...mine get replaced...I guess brookstone has a contract that they should not be cut off...

Hey Mary~
I used the lime green zip ties also, and easily spotted our luggage coming around.

Don't forget to bring extra zip ties for your return trip or if you're staying overnight before the cruise.... and remember to put the nail clippers in an outside pocket that DOESN'T have a zip tie on it. Yeah, not thinking, I threw a zip tie on my front pockets and Jacqui had her manicure set in her luggage... Luckily, I hadn't pulled my ties too tight and was able to back them off easily.

If they have to search your luggage, yes, they will cut your luggage locks off and resecure it with a TSA zip tie. They put a note in your luggage that it was selected for searching.

Sometimes going through the screening process, they can't identify an object in your luggage and they have to search it. That's why they tell you not to put all your books together and to put your shoes on top. some food items also can't be identified.

Coming back last week, my daughters luggage was opened and searched. I saw the blue TSA tag on it when I grabbed it off the belt. We couldn't tell they had even searched it, looked like nothing was moved, they may have noticed her hair dryer, plus she had stashed the cords to the two way radio's and the cell phone chargers in there.

I bought a bag of zip ties (electrical) from Home Depot and threw some extras in the top pocket of my suitcase so we had plenty for the return trip. I believe the stateroom hosts may have some if you need them also.
