Got a letter (actually 4!) informing us our local HSBC branch is closing!

Doesn't really effect me directly as I do nearly all my banking on-line, but DW has all her Brownie and Girl Guide District accounts there. The only time she can get to the bank to pay money in is lunch time, (she works in a school), now she's got no chance! She has now got to move all her acccounts to another local bank!

Can't believe a bank that makes billions of pounds profit can't afford to keep a local branch open to provide a 'service' to their customers!

sadly its not surprising anymore !! isn't hsbc the ones with the ads about being local :rotfl2:

It is happening everywhere. I live in the North East of Scotland and worked in the Clydesdale Bank for 15 years and where I live there is a lot of little villages and towns. I worked in a lot of local branches all which are now closed.

We are now fighting the same battle with the Post Office. They are closing now as well :headache:

Banks dont care about their customers just sales and profits (I am not bitter -honest :scared1: )

That's just it isn't it we aren't using the branches as much as we use to :(

However, we are using them more than we were 30 years ago. There were branches everywhere then.

Remember 25 to 30 years ago relatively few people had bank accounts. The bank manager was held in very high esteem in the community and a very important figure (think Captain Mainwaring - Dad's Army). The majority of people were paid weekly and had the money in cash. Only the salaried staff (the minority) had bank accounts. You also had to have a full interview with the bank manager before they would consider opening an account for you. I remember mine prior to going to university - fully suited up I was!

It was in the 1980's that weekly paid employees were "encouraged" to go monthly paid and have a bank account.

So 25 years ago, many more banks and branches, far fewer customers.

Today, far fewer banks and branches, many more customers - BUT having to make bigger profits in a global society.

Personally i never use the branch other than paying a cheque in which is rare. I've just switched from HSBC to alliance and leicester and appart from the post office it's all online.

The Hsbc branch near us has just closed too! so locally we are left with a LLoyds tsb and a Natwest before having to drive into town and pay for parking:sad2:
