As someone who doesn't live in New England, RL is very acceptable for someone to try it if they can't try it in New England for their first time. I've eaten lobster in New England a handful of times and yes its amazing, but since I can't get it all the time, RL is acceptable.

I had the whole lobster at Narcossee's last Sept. The price was $60, but we were on the dining plan. The lobster was very good.

RL is good for what it is, not steller, but edible. There was a place in Kissimmee a few years ago that was a buffett. It offered all the whole lobster thatone could eaton a buffet that was $20! Oour son ate 10 of them!!

I completely agree with the above. Living in New England makes it easy to get good quality seafood that's fresh. I understand not everyone is so fortunate. We have reservations at Cape May next month and I'm feeling reservations about going. I'm afraid we're going to be disappointed, but not all the reservations we have are about what *I* want.

Haven't been to Cape May myself, but it is on our list for next trip. And like you, I was hesitant, but I've "talked" with several people from New England who have been and they spoke very highly of it, so I am hopeful.

I have lived in New England pretty much my entire life and practically grew up on lobster, so I'd say I know a thing or two. I have to agree with havoc315.

Please do not go to Red Lobster for your first lobster experience. True New Englanders don't even eat there.

File under "Things I Don't Think About/Things I Take For Granted"! Cape Cod has spoiled me to death on sea food. I actually ask what kind of scallops (sea or bay) are in dishes I order! I agree re: Red Lobster not being the best first-seafood experience... but how picky of an eater are you? It's relatively blandish (in that it's not super, super fishy), so it could also be a good introduction. IMHO.

Agree with PP re: Once you start... you'll never stop! I used to avoid all seafood like the plague, and one day I developed a craving for fish. That was the end of me (and my budget)! I briefly read someone say something about lobster bisque at Chefs de France and almost jumped for joy. I hope they have it at some of the seafood restaurants.

This is the truth. For me, RL is the standard, are there better places, yes, are there worse places, also yes. I grew up in Indiana in the late 70s and 80s and had to drive an hour to get to RL. Fresh Seafood is easier now a days, but I would say try RL to set the standard, and you won't be disappointed later with non New England stuff.

Don't try Long John Silver's Lobster bites as a first taste, that is like using McDonald's as your first burger.

I would try Narcoossee's at Grand Floridian, they have the Maine lobster and also a surf and turf with lobster tail.
We had the twin tails at Capt. Jacks many years ago, but they don't have them anymore.

I am a New Englander and my DH and I eat lots of lobster! But it has to be "Maine" lobster. We were at a seafood place in Florida years ago and they had big lobster tank of Maine lobster near the front of the restaurant so we ordered lobster off the menu. We started eating them and yuck...couldn't eat the meal because it wasn't Maine lobster and tasted strange. Maine lobster is sweeter and more tender. It's a learned talent to open up and crack the shells of a whole lobster but have fun with it. And yes you just remove the green or red tamale inside...no big deal. I would try it locally and see if you like it first. Red lobster would probably be ok if it's Maine lobster...I know I sound like a snob, but it's really the best!

I agree with PP. Maine lobster is the best. My mom's cousin lives in Maine, so we would head up there every summer. The one week I had lobster in some sort of fashion every day. Even at McDonald's. That was a mistake, but I was 14 at the time......

Anyway, I don't mind Red Lobster. Is it my favorite? No. Do I groan when my DH bugs me to go? Yes. Is it the most horrible place to go for a first time lobster experience? Nah. You have to go with what is readily available! It's not like southern OH has a lot of lobsters crawling in the lakes and rivers......

I would much rather go somewhere other than Disney though-WAY too expensive.

You are not going to get decent Maine lobster in Florida, period. There is no good local seafood restaurant that serves true Maine hardshell lobster. None.

There are some really good local seafood restaurants, but lobster is not a feature.

Now, having said that going to Red Lobster in the greater Orlando area for your first experience with lobster is not a terrible idea. You won't pay an exhorbitant price for it like you will at any restaurant that serves it at Disney.

However, eating a whole cooked lobster is tricky business, particularly since you've not done it before.

You may want to order a dish with lobster in it, or ask the chef at Red Lobster to prepare it "lazy" for you. They'll do that if you ask. That simply means that they've opened it for you and removed all the meat.

Now, if you want to dig in and do it yourself that's fine! Just be sure they've cracked everything for you. Oh, and don't pass up those little legs that look to be more trouble than they are worth! They have some very sweet meat in them and are fun to "work on."

We always get the Maine steamed whole lobster at Narcossee's. I love it because it's a change from regular menu choices at Disney. We love lobster and it's best cooked and eaten at home. But since you've never had it before go ahead a splurge at Narcossee's

Whatever you decide, make sure to ask if it was previously frozen. If not, order something else. I hope you love it!
