Living in a cul de sac? Like it?

We just moved into our home and it sits on what I think is a pretty big cul de sac.... the street part of it must be about 100' at its widest part. I had never lived on one before. I assumed there would be almost no traffic, as there are only about 6 homes that actually live on the cul de sac. But surprisingly, at least to me, I bet 40 cars a day turn around in it. And we're a couple of blocks off the road that leads into our development.

MY buddy used to live on one, and he said that cul de sacs frequently don't get timely winter services - snow plowing. Not sure I agree, as I came up to this house to see if it had been plowed before we bought it. And the streets were cleaned.

Any reason to dislike living on a cul de sac?

It's too late for us now, anyway, but I would like to know what I might need to be prepared for.

I would hate it my MIL lives on a cul de sac, everyone use them to turn around on and drives like bats out of heck

The traffic is really the only thing I can think of. Everybody uses it to turn around. I never knew so many people needed to turn around before living towards the end of a cul de sac.

I live on a cul-de-sac and I LOVE IT!!! My kids can run around and play without worrying about getting ran over by a car. Even the people who turn around have to do so slowly.

All of us who live in the court (except one family) are really close and we often gather in the court to talk. Come to think of it....if that one family would leave it would be THE perfect court!!! :goodvibes

I really hope you enjoy your court as much as we have. Now I couldn't even imagine living on a regular street again.

I grew up on a cul de sac off of a cul de sac. We got a few cars that would use it as a turnaround, but not that many. I think it depends where you are.

We loved it! We used to play in the circle. So few cars came down that we could set up whole games in the street and never be interrupted. Because of the small number of houses (5) you knew everyone and their cars - and they knew to watch for kids.

I live on one and love it. We are in a very quiet neighborhood and a mile to the main road. Not much traffic at all but the buses come to the end to turn around. My kids have a ball growing up and playing here and we never had to worry - it has been great!

Have had 3 houses on cul-de-sac's and all had very little traffic. Streets got plowed just as quickly as the main road that lead into each development.

I really love our cul de sac. It's not at the end of a road, so there's no reason to turn around on it. The only traffic we get is from people who live her (or those who are lost :)). It's great for kids because there's a big open space to ride bikes or Barbie Jeeps, draw with sidewalk chalk, etc. The only bad thing is that there isn't a lot of room for guests to park. And I guess if you don't want the neighborhood kids using it as a playground, that could get annoying. ;) It's too bad yours is busy. Ours is very peaceful.

We live in a cul de sac and LOVE IT. yeah some cars come to turn around but they can't really come speeding in with the cul de sac. we've never really had trouble with that. All the kids are always out there playing in it in the nice weather and I'd say we get pretty timely plow service in the snow.

Yeah, so far, I think I like it.... I see lots of kids playing / riding their bikes in it. The cars that are using it seem to be driving slowly. As soon as the weather breaks I think I will set up a kick ball tournament. :thumbsup2

I like living in a cul-de-sac because it's so quiet; kids are always out playing and it seems safe.

We do have people using it as a turnaround a lot though! We live in a really small neighborhood and I don't know how so many people can get lost enough that they need to turn around! They have to do so slowly though, so it's not too much of a safety issue.

I've lived on one for almost 20 yrs now. We don't get too much traffic up here. As for snow removal in my area it varies... Sometimes they plow quickly other times we have to call the town to get someone to plow. Another problem with the snow is that we live on the top of the road and they tend to build a wall of snow in front of our driveway. Other than the snow I have complaints!!!

You're really going to love it. Especially once you get to know all of your neighbors. I live in Alabama so we don't have a snow issue to deal with. That's the only thing I can't give you any advice on.

Keep us informed! I recommend rolling the grill out there and slinging up some dogs and burgers. The kids love that stuff! They roll by on their bikes and grab a hotdog and keep on going! :yay:

I've been living in a cul-de-sac for a while with my family. I really like them, when I was younger there were a lot of kids in my little cul-de-sac, and we would just hang out all the time. Especially in the summer, when it was warm, we would kick back and enjoy the summer nights.

Now that we're all older kids now, we don't hang out as much, but it's okay. We have a new wave of kids who have moved in, and they can play around without having to worry about cars speeding up and down.

My cul-de-sac is an L-shaped, so when kids play outside, they play further into the cul-de-sac and away from the main road.

We love it too. The only complaint I have is like the PP mentioned - the snow plow guy always plows a wall of snow right in front of our driveway, blocking our mailbox. If we don't go out and dig the mailbox out, the mailman doesn't deliver our mail.

I live on a cul de sac as well and love it. Yes, we do have a few people who come down the street and have to turn around. but our street has about 15 houses on it.

I live in southeastern part of VA, so usually snow doesn't happen here-except last year. However, our city does not plow any residential streets, so it isn't anything against cul de sacs.

My DD and her friend play outside no worries.

I live in a really little cul de sac. The entire road is long enough for 4 houses. It doesn't bother me. I have no firm opinion one way or the other. The entire development is set up this way.

We've lived on one for 28 years.
No traffic problems the first few years because there was a "Not a Through Street" sign at the entrance.
For some reason the county took the sign down, THEN we started getting cars coming down looking for a way out. We kept calling to have the sign put back up, and the county kept saying they don't use "Not a Through Street" signs anymore. Took us a couple years to figure out to ask for a "Dead End" sign, which was immediately put up. Problem went away.

See if you can get a "no outlet" sign put up at the beginning of the street.

I've lived in 2 cul de sacs and prefer them. Very little traffic and safer environment.
