The few times I have happened to watch talk shows, I get the impression they are acting out scripted situations among the various hosts to get more to watch. They sometimes pretend to argue with each other, say something very opinionated or act like they don't know what the other people are talking about. Most of that is just an act.
They actually do rehearse talk shows - even the interviews. They don't really script them, but usually the guest and host sit down for a "pre-interview" and go over all the questions. The general idea is fleshed out, even if it might change a little during taping.
