LIVE now Alaskan Sockeye returning, HUGE numbers jumping

I have been watching the last few weeks, lots of salmon, on some days just literally running over the paws of the bears.

some of the bears act like diners at the Country Buffet...oooh more ribs, I guess I can make room for just one more fish
Is there a certain time of day the bears tend to come out?

it is pretty much all day, they trade off, so sometimes one is leaving and another is coming in. But it is random, sometimes I click in and there are fish jumping like jiffy pop and I am like where are the bears at they are missing out....

Is it bad that I'm watching the jumping salmon as I'm eating dinner?

DH's aunt lives in Alaska, and this is the last of the filets she sent us last year. Unfortunately, she broke her arm last winter and had to have surgery so she's with her DD in Oregon this year so we may not get any random salmon deliveries this year.

r.e. bold -- Didn't bother me as I ate some Sockeye tonight, it's soooo good. :)

Are we sure we aren't just seeing the same 10 fish jumping over and over again? :-) Sure looks to me like they aren't doing a very good job of getting to the top of the little waterfall so they can continue upriver.

I love the ones who jump straight up and do not go anywhere...

look what I can do comes to mind....

If you ever get to Juneau, take time for the salmon interpretive center and salmon ladders. Once you learn a bit about what they are doing and how, the whole process is just…awesome. :lovestruc

Beating and battering themselves against the rocks is a necessary part of their spawning process. They are literally programmed to arrive at the spawning grounds almost dead. It’s really all just fascinating.

Salmon really crapped out in the reproduction lottery.....

Slugs now.... there is true equality: all hermaphrodites.... can do it together with both getting pregnant .... or by themselves.....
