Live-Action Moana (2026)

The new actress for Moana looks and sounds great!

It will be interesting to see if they change the story at all--I'm guessing not much, since the original is not that old.

Live action? I guess you have actors, some ocean and island scenes but the rest of it looks identical to the animation. The CGI looks just like the animation. I'm sure it will make a billion dollars but it looks like a shot for shot remake of a movie that's not old enough to merit one.

A direct remake live action of a 15 year old film with CGI Dragons made about $640M worldwide and likely finishes in the top 10 for 2025 box office. A basic shot for shot remake of a 23 year old film with “Live Action” Stitch made over $1B.

Until audiences consistently say otherwise to some of these direct remakes, they’ll keep coming.

That’s exactly it, I couldn’t put my finger on it until I read your post. It’s like they stuck a live actor in an animated film and kept the rest animated. It’s a shame since I thought the Lilo and Stitch live action was entertaining.

For real, the original isn't even 10 years old yet. Why are we doing this already?

Money. Women and young girls are a strong demo for Moana. They love it. They don't care about anything other than it is Moana.

Now, we just need Bob Iger to lean on Alan Bergman for a live action Zootopia to be released in 2027. Just like the live-action The Lion King or Mufasa movies.

Am I the only one who cringes at the use of the term "live action" for CGI movies??

As others have pointed out, the new "live action" "Moana" trailer just looks like a few actors dropped into a CGI movie.

I'm a woman and I love the original Moana. I don't see the need for a live action. I don't like the live action remakes in general and this one is just way too soon.

No, you are not alone. Compare the still photos from the upcoming Legend of Zelda movie with real actors in New Zealand (i.e. a real place -- on location) with Moana. There is a stark difference in the feel.

The problem is that Moana is a "live-action" corporate driven product/project. TWDC is starving for box office hits. I cannot stress this enough. The movie studios are hurting for many reasons.

So, packaging a "live-action" Moana marketed to drive the under 18 female demographic and their mothers and fathers to take them will lead to a substantial likelihood of success at the box office.
