Little "Thor" has RSV

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is the most common respiratory virus in infants and young children. It infects virtually all infants by the age of two years. In most infants, the virus causes symptoms resembling those of the common cold. In infants born prematurely and/or with chronic lung disease, RSV can cause a severe or even life-threatening disease. Each year, RSV disease results in over 125,000 hospitalizations.

PS - Sonya, I hope your baby is doing better. As someone already said, be sure to take care of yourselves through this, too. I can remember long nights when DS#2 had croup -- my mom would come over and let me have a nap.

Megan has had this is fall as well. She's 10 so it can hit older children as well. A suggestion. When he coughs up that thick stuff we have found that the blue bubble syringe like they give you when they are babbies works reall well at sucking that stuff out of their mouth so they don't swallow it. OUr dr told us she would cough some for 5-6 weeks and we are still coughing. Good luck.

Sonya- good thoughts coming your way! I too went through this with my oldest when he was an infant. The advice so far has been great- if he cries during his nebulizer treatments, it is heartbreaking for you, but more of the medicine goes into his lungs. I used to sit crossed leg on my bed with my son on my lap, and I would sing to him during his treatments- it calmed me down too:D good luck, and keep us posted on how he's doing!

The poor guy is still coughing and will for a while. He had a better night last night, slept for about 2 hours at a time. It felt like we were new parents again! He cries at 1st for the treatments but soon usually falls asleep, thank goodness. I don't mind those so much. However his nose won't stop running and it's getting so sore he won't let me suck it out without a fight.
Right now he is on the floor playing, waiting until the Chiefs game comes on so he can either cheer on out team or fall asleep, whatever comes first. :p
Thanks for all the good thoughts, he needs them , he still has a fevor and is breathing hard. :(

Glad he's doing a little better. The coughing will last a long time but the fevor should go down fairly soon. Hopefully the cough will ease enough for him to sleep better soon. If I remember right it takes about a month for them to fully recover.

DS had it at age 2 and we spent 4 nights in the hospital. Like others have said be sure to take care of yourselves as well. Lots of prayers for you, dh and Little "Thor"! :)

My DS had broncholitis when he was 8 months old. The best advice that was given to me was to NOT use the mask. My DS hated it. What we did was use the set up with a mouthpiece and blow the "smoke" at him. The dosage you are given is a full adult dose (they don't make children or infant doses), so all they really want is the child to get about half of it anyway. By blowing it at him, he didn't feel confined by the mask, and I could just sithim in his highchair and he was comfortable and it was fine. He did cry, but it was MUCH easier than using the mask. Both my respiritory therapist and my Ped recommend this. I also have a friend who's son is asthmatic, and she does the same thing. DS developed pediatric asthma from this, and it is quite common for ths to occur. What they're not sure is if the broncholitis causes the asthma or the lungs were asthmatic to begin with and this is how they react the first time. DS is now 2 1/2 and is being treated daily with Singular now. I'm done with the 3 - 4 times daily treatments, and the constant worrying when the next wheeze would start.

Sonya--we went through this with DS. Bronchiolitis as an infant, his first winter. If they did not already, see if you can get the mask attachment for the nebulizer. It makes it easier to get the meds into him. It will be OK. If they don't want to hospitalize him, they probably caught it nice and early.

We too went through the Broncholitis thing with eldest DS......thankfully he didn't need to be hospitalised, but it was close. Nightmare to be exact.:(

Hope your little guy gets better soon Sonya

I hope your son is feeling beter. Did the Dr give any oral steriod or just the nebulizer? My guys will never keep the mask on either, try to put something on the tV while you give the treatment. They usually will sit better if distracted. Hope all is better very soon
Tara

He's about the same today, still tired, coughing, breathing hard. Fevor is gone though. Still in touch with the doctors about how he is doing.
huey duey & luey, he does have an oral steriod too. pulmacort and something that starts with an X.
Thanks for your good thoughts and prayers everyone. He still needs them.

AWWWWWW That poor little guy.... Lots and Lots of prayers and pixie dust coming your way!

My Great nephew Michael had this last month. He Was hospitalized 2 days. He is fine now. Little Samuel will be fine too, I will be thinking of him. :D

My kids also went through this and it is a very rough period. Try to get sleep when you can. My baby was in the hospital he was so sick. So was my daughter. Try not to use the blue syringe too much on his nose because it really makes the nasal passages swollen and then nothing will come out. Our pediatrician and pediatric pulmonary dr. said to absolutely use the mask because if you blow it at them too much goes into the air and not into them. So ask before not using the mask. It might be the old "ask 10 different doctors the same question and you might get 10 different answers" though. Go with your gut and you will do what is right for your baby. Good luck.

Well he had a better evening, he played and laughed and even tried crawling again. Hard to do on a hardwood floor. :p I hope he sleeps well tonight. Grandma is taking care of him tomorrow.

He doesn't mind the breathing treatments too much, we will use the mask, he cries a lot at first but then settles down and usually falls asleep right at the end.

He hates the nose sucker however, but I don't know what else to do. We have saline to help loosen it up but he really needs help getting all that stuff out of his nose.

Thanks again everyone, I hope he has turned the corner!

Poor little Sam. I sure hope he is feeling better soon. :)

A friend of mine has a 10 mth old and he had RSV around Christmas. Those breathing treatments looked harder on her than on the baby.

Glad to hear he is doing better. Take good care of yourselves, too. Babies aren't the only ones that can get RSV. In fact the nurses told me that usually when you get a bad cold that goes into bronchitis (however you spell it), it is usually the product of the RSV virus.
