The Little Mermaid is due to be Disney's next classic animated title to receive Platinum Edition treatment.
The the 2-disc set and Collector's editions to hit stores on 2nd October region 2 and 3rd October region 1.
This is the first time in 7 years that the film will be available on DVD. Expect deleted scenes, audio commentaries and behind-the-scenes featurettes, along with archived art materials and musical-based features as well. Both the film and its soundtrack are being digitally restored for the release. :woohoo:

Good news, but a shame that it is only Special edition and not Platinium :confused3

I love it when Disney re-releases some true classic films so that I can add them to my dvd collection :goodvibes

oh.. I don't know what editions they are being released on...I usally just buy the special edition anyway..

That's great news, just before my birthday!

I have to admit that I've never actually seen the Little Mermaid, for somereason we seemed to have every Disney film except that on video when I was a kid. I love the songs and Ariel though (I had a video of some short stories based on the film.) Can't wait to actually see it.

This is probably my favourite. Not sure it has ever been out on DVD in this country (or maybe I've just not been able to find one since we got our DVD player!)

DD has never seen this one as my video has had so much use it's unwatchable so we'll be preordering this for sure!

What tends to be the difference between platinum and Special Editions?

The Platinum Edition Collection represents the Walt Disney Company's most treasured family classics presented with unsurpassed video and audio, along with a treasure trove of bonus materials culled from the studio's archives. With a limited window of availability, this series currently is slated at two releases per year. Upcoming titles will include "Lady and the Tramp," "The Little Mermaid," "The Jungle Book," "101 Dalmatians," "Pinocchio," "Fantasia," "Peter Pan" and "Sleeping Beauty."

The October release window offers a Platinum Edition Collector's Gift Sets .

So far, three of the Platinum Editions also have been released as Collector's Gift Sets. These boxed sets include the DVD plus bonus collectibles. The Lion King set includes "The Lion King: The Journey" companion book (featuring storyboards, concept art and production stills), nine character lithographs and a certificate of authenticity. Aladdin includes a companion book, seven character sketches and a film frame Senitype. Cinderella includes a companion book, character sketches by animator Ollie Johnston and a numbered film frame Senitype.

These are the dates that I have got.
2006--Lady and the tramp and Litlle mermaid
2007--Jungle book and 101 dalmation
2008--Pinocchio and snow white
2009--peter pan
2010--sleeping beauty and the lion king
2011--fantasia and fantasia 2000
2012--Beauty and the Beast.

I don't understand why Beauty and the beast is being released so far away. I am sure that the last release was before the lion king! :confused3 :confused3

Probably because the platinium of B&B was released on 8th October 2002. :)

YEAH!! I am so excited about this!! I get my hopes up every year that it will be the Little Mermaid as I don't even have it on video. This is definitely going on my Christmas list.
