Little Kid's Carry-on Q

I picked up a couple of cute *little* tinkerbell backpacks for my DD. I was thinking they could have these on the plane. The more I think about it, they won't have enough room in these bags for their activities to keep themselves occupied plus a couple of comfort items - blankets and stuffed animals.

Are kids allowed to have a little bag and a carry-on on the plane like an adult is allowed to have a purse and a carryon? We're flying SWA if that makes a difference.

It's likely they'd be allowed, but do you really want to do that?

A backpack works great and they only have to keep up with one bag.

Why not save them and use them as little gifts the first night you're there.

It might be best to leave them for the parks. Going through security is a pain in the butt, especially with the little ones, so the least amount to take off and put back on the better!! Less chance of loosing anything!

My dd, now 15, started flying when she was 4. She was responsible for her own bag. She had a Barbie rolling bag. I doubt she could have handled both a backpack and a rolling bag. I would use one or that other, but not both.

I'd save the Tinker Bell bags for the parks. When we fly, we try to bring as few bags as possible. It can be crazy going through security with bags, strollers, car seats, etc, so I try to minimize the # of bags we bring. My DD9 and DS7 bring backpacks for their books, snacks, etc. I bring a diaper bag for DS2. and DH & I share a carryon. Less is more when flying with little kids.

I agree with the other posters. I would save the tinkerbell bags for the parks. We are flying out on Friday with 3 boys ages 6, 4, and 3..plus DH and I. We are taking 1 carry-on (small enough to fit under the seat in front of us). We want to have as little as possible to deal with especially since we will also have 3 checked bags and 3 carseats to lug around (plus 3 kids and the carry-on.) once we land. Then as others have mentioned there is the issue with security. The less you have, the quicker you will get through it. Have Fun on your trip!!!

If the tink bacpacks are small enough, they might both fit inside a standard school sized backpack. Once you are thru security and on the plane, it might be nice to give each their own bag of their stuff, esp if you end up not all sitting in the same row. And yes, if they have a ticket they each get a carry on bag and a personal item. Best of luck -- Suzanne

When I took my two daughters to Disney World last October ( one was 3 1/2 the other was 2 1/2) I gave them each their own backpack with a small change of clothes, sippy cup, small snack, and 3 of their favorite non-noise making toys. I was traveling by myself with them (hubby was deployed to Iraq). I must say that it wasn't as hard as I thought. I had a small stroller for the younger one that I had checked at the gate, so I could hook the backpacks on it while at the airport. I may be a semi light packer for carry-on bags because I just used a slightly bigger beach bag as a diaper bag and my carry-on. It worked great.

My kids each carry their school backpack on the plane with their electronics, headphones, water bottle, etc.. If you have a small daypack like you are describing, put it inside the larger pack.

I agree with the other posters. I will be traveling with my twin six year olds next month. They are responsible for their own bags (in theory anyways - LOL)! They can't handle two different bags and I don't want the additional burden of keeping up with both of their bags (for me that would be four since I have two kids) plus my bags.
