I saw a post talking about what exactly happened to us in 1997.
We were at the all stars with our 3 year old. I went out the door to snap a picture and my hubby followed..my mom was still in the room. We were about 12 feet away when our 3 year old had his fingers by the door and ..being the door was so heavy it started to automatially close. He was so little and the door was too heavy for him to push back open. I screamed for a cleaning lady who was standing right there to catch the door but she didn't understand me. I'll never forget that scream as that door closed and latched all the way on all four of his fingers. It seemed like an eternity before I could reach him. Yes..he broke his 2 fingers. I hate doors that automatically close!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please watch this in any hotel..Please!!!!

Oh, how awful!!:( :( :(

It happened to my daughter once with the car door, and I'm still paranoid when it comes to little fingers and doors. Thanks for the heads up!!

Thanks for the warning. We will be at ASMO with 2 little ones again, and I never even thought of that happening.

Ouch, the poor kid. I would have never even had that cross my mind. Are his fingers fully recovered to %100 percent use. The poor kid, you go to Disney for fun and his turned into a nightmare.:(

I really do feel bad for your little kid. Been there done that a few years ago... and it isn't fun. But... It's not really anyones fault. The automatic closing doors are for your own protection, so that you never forget to close your door completely, or so no one can follow you into the room. When you think about it, a little kid can get into just about anything conceivable, and turn it into something "bad." If he makes it out of his childhood with that being his only blemish, then he'll make out better than most! Hope his little fingers get better!

My little one is now 7 and his fingers recovered to 100% usage. yes, he still remembers that trip but mosty about how much fun we had ...not his accident(only mentions it sometimes).

I have a little one too and thanks to these boards I have learned some really helpful safety tricks for when staying in a Hotel ROOM.

1. IF you are going out ...even for just a second...
move the latch over...so even if the door closes...IT wont close all the way and lock. Also, you can get back in! :)

2. hang a towel over the bathroom door...little ones go in and locks themself in there and in a panic cant get out.

3. Balconies that have chairs....MOVE THEM INSIDE. and always keep the slider locked. I always knew my son couldnt get through the bars...but he sure could climb up on those chairs.

4. Check all elec. outlets when you arrive. ...Just make sure they are safe.

5 Just do a quick check of the floors...one time I found a pill from the people before me....YOu know those little ones can put anything in their mouth.

I am sure there are more....and I'll bet all of you have a few good ones too! We all gotta watch out for each other...and especially our LITTLE ONES WE LOVE SOO MUCH!

NO! This may be a safety tip for keeping little fingers safe but it is absolutely contrary to hotel safety. Never, ever, not even for a second to run down and get ice leave your hotel door open. Chances are you might be okay at WDW but this is exactly how several families were robbed in Orlando area hotels a few years ago. Doors were left ajar as families ran back and forth between rooms. The bad guys just walked in and robbed the whole group.

did you notify the CMs at the front desk? i fell down the stairs recently, it was my fault. i mentioned this to a family friend who is a former CM and he said i should have reported it. glad to hear all is well!:p

Bella1 those are excellant ideas. I think that by putting the door thingy in the crack would be fine if you are right there..I understand not to leave it there to get ice etc.
Heres another one...(my fear of smashed fingers) When you put your kids in the van, car etc. say "Hands on Head" to the children and they put their hands on their heads while you are shuting their door. I get funny, amused looks in the parking lot but it ALWAYS has worked for me. No more smashed fingers. Also I would have never thought of a pill on the hotel room floor thanks for the heads up.

Last year when we were at the Poly, in bed in the morning sleeping I awoke to a blood curdlling scream. The kind you know has to be bad. I jumped up and went to the door to find a father running down the hall with his child in his arms. The door had closed on the little girls finger and it was almost cut off. It was awful. Those doors are so heavy you have to be very careful.

My son did this in a heavy door last week, but his fingers were on the inside hinged part when the door closed.
