Does anyone use instead of regular salt? It seems like an easy healthy change to make.

It is nasty!!! It has a very metallic taste to it to me. Try Mrs DAsh or something.

I use Half-Salt (not sure if you'd have the same brand, but you'll probably have a similar type).

It's half sodium salts and half potassium salts, thus half the sodium of regular salt.

I really don't notice a taste difference.... the 1/2 regular sodium salt seems mask the slight bitter flavor of the potassium salt.

I like the lite salt. It doesnt taste metallicy to me, it tastes saltier - so you have to be sure to use less.

That being said, it is really high in potassium. Just something to think about if youre on any sort of med's that interfere with potassium (or take potassium supplements)

I like Lite Salt though.

I know this sound dumb, but it never seemed to "melt" into the food. You got the whole crystal of salt instead of the flavor of the salt when you use the lite salt.

I use Morton's Lite, not to cook with but to salt my food. I salt EVERYTHING. It's a very bad habit, but I've been doing it since I was a child. I even salt salad. :guilty:

Anyway, I actually like the Lite salt better. It tastes saltier to me.

I use Nu-Salt and it is awesome. It tastes just like salt (to me, I know some people would disagree) and it is a very easy change to make for those salt freaks like me.

I usually don't even have regular salt in the house, and I cook a lot. We've used lite salt for 20+ years. The products that have no salt are pretty nasty, but I think Morton's Lite tastes pretty much like regular salt.

You could try using Kosher Salt or Sea Salt; both of them are very flavorful but have lower concentrated sodium. Kosher Salt is very quick-dissolving, so it spreads more evenly through cooked foods.

If you're looking for a substitute (not necessarily to eliminate it, but even to reduce it), I'd recommend the Tony Chachere's line of products. http://www.tonychacheres.com/seasoning/
I'm a little biased because I'm from Louisiana, but IMO nothing else can touch it for all-purpose value. The regular version (which is fairly salty, I admit, 310 mg.) can be found most anywhere, but I most like the More Spice blend, which has less salt. It may be harder to find, but it's worth it. They also make a Lite (blue box, which has about 100 mg.) and a No-Salt (white box) version, which uses potassium, which I don't recommend. The Spice n' Herbs is new, and it's good, too, but I don't think that the salt content is much lower than the regular. The boxes are normally 8 oz for less than $3 (though you can buy larger ones), so you get your money's worth.

Eliminating salt was one of the hardest things I've done.

When you're used to salt, it is tough to start tasting food without it. You have to adjust.

But I did it. Mrs. Dash is my friend. And chopping fresh stuff to mix in. :)

Good luck!

I use nu salt as added salt to my own plate. I do cook with reg salt.

One of these days I will try using Nu salt for cooking.

I have to admit that I LOVE SALT... really.. LOVE it... LOTS of it too....

I add different herbs etc... but I really enjoy salt. which ain't a good thing... but dang a girl can only give up so many things!

We use lite salt. I secretly replaced it in the salt shaker at my house and never said anything to anyone (of course I'm the only one that fills the shaker, kinda like putting TP on the roll - but that's another story). We've been using it for well over a year. Just recently DH told me that I needed to buy salt when I was out grocery shopping as we were out. I checked and we had an almost full container of the lite salt. When I said we had salt, he said just the lite stuff and I don't like it. I said that's funny you've been eating it for over a year now and never mentioned it:rotfl: No one ever noticed the change. I think it tastes just like salt.

Just be aware that the lite salt is a definite "NO NO" if you have any kind of kidney disfunction.

I like sea salt best, and use a grinder for the coarse crystals.
