Lisella's Wishbook: design inspiration 3/16

The Proposal

Let me be upfront and tell you that sometimes DF comes up big and is quite romantic (like my Valentine’s story) and then sometimes not so much. With that said, I will say that this proposal story might be very different from the stories you are used to reading on these boards.

Last August, I celebrated one of those milestone birthdays. I called it the big ugly one. Well, for my birthday I really wanted something fun to make me forget that I was turning 40. Of course I asked for a diamond ring as I included one on each and every gift list there was an opportunity to make such a request. “What do you want for Christmas, Lisa?” “A diamond ring, of course.” “What do you want for Easter?” “A diamond ring of course.” “I’m going to the mall, do you need anything?” “A diamond ring, of course.” It was kind of an ongoing joke that went on for years, I think you get the idea, LOL. The request eventually became more detailed – instead of simply a diamond ring, I would ask for a perfectly cut diamond that “explodes with sparkle”. I got the idea from a commercial I heard.

But for this birthday, I was more serious about my request. There was nothing holding us back from getting married anymore. I didn’t need anything for a gift and there was nothing else I could think of that I wanted that I couldn’t just go out and buy. Since there was no big surprise dance party with a disco ball (that I had been requesting), the timing for a romantic birthday seemed perfect. Like I said, I could remember my 40th as the birthday I got engaged instead of simply the one that I turned 40. In the weeks and days that preceded my birthday, when asked what I would like, I would simply say, “you know” or “take a big guess”.

DF has Tuesdays & Wednesdays off from work at the tattoo shop (his weekends) and since I was unemployed, he decided we would spend this particular Tuesday & Wednesday together to celebrate my birthday (which was Wednesday). Of course, the weather on Tuesday was cool and drizzly so we could not think of too much to do together. It turned into one of those all day affairs of “so, what do you want to do?” “I don’t know, what do you want to do?” It was easy to get caught up in the usually daily stuff around the house and watching junk on TV. But every so often, DF would get a bit frustrated and say he wanted to do something for my birthday, so to please tell him what I wanted. I was also being stubborn and wanted him to surprise me, but could also not come up with any ideas of what I wanted to do to help him along.

After quite a bit of back and forth, the following conclusions kind of lingered in the air:
DF knew that I really wanted a ring.
DF wanted to get me a ring.
DF did not want to get me a ring for my birthday. In his words, he thought it would be “cheesing out on a birthday present”…I don’t think so…
DF wanted to take me shopping to buy the ring before he proposed.
I wanted to be proposed to before I got the ring.

Of course, the funny part is that neither of us was admitting any of the above facts. Most of them were discussed later on. But finally, the conversation went something like this:

DF: “What do you want to do for your birthday?”
Me: “I don’t know. It’s so lousy out. All the things I keep thinking of involve being outside like the beach or fishing, so I don’t know.”
DF: “Well, I would like to buy you something or take you shopping. What do you want?”
Me: “You know what I want.”
DF: “No, for the past few weeks you will only tell me what you don’t want…no money, no gift certificates, no flowers.”
Me: “You know what I want.”
DF: “Well, you have to come with me to pick it out.”
Me: “Yes, but you have to take care of something first.”
DF: “No, we have to go shopping first.”
Me: “You can do it without shopping first. We can go shopping after.”
DF: “For crying out loud, we have been together all these years. You know I want to marry you.
Me: “Yeah.”
DF: “So let’s go to the friggin’ jewelry store.”
Me: “OK”

So there you go... :lmao:

The entire day up until then was very frustrating. But in the end, we picked out a beautiful diamond ring. It’s called a Leo Diamond, which is known for its brilliant sparkle. DF loved the Leos as he knew I wanted sparkle! I picked out a simple solitaire as that is what I like, nothing over the top. We had to have the ring sized so I did not have it on my finger for about 4 days. I was hoping that there would be some kind of romantic moment when we finally had the ring in our possession, but that never happened.

We later discussed the fact that he thought a diamond would be a cheesy birthday present or an “easy out” to getting a present. I assured him that it was a diamond after all, nothing cheesy about it, and definitely not an “easy out” to birthday shopping. I told him that if he still felt that way, I was letting it slide.

Though there was not much romance about it, all was well in the end and it did turn out to be the birthday we got engaged. I think in this category (weddings) we don’t exactly see eye to eye on what should happen – DF coming from the thought that we’ve been together so long that we are just making it official and then me thinking that we still deserve something special. We decided to hold off a bit on picking a date. After all, we don’t want to rush into anything… :rotfl:

I’ll try to get a picture of the ring up soon.

Next up – Why Am I Here (on the Dis)?

That is hilarious! Oh yeah, trying to decide what to do sounds like us every weekend.

Oh my goodness, I'd die if that's how I was proposed to lol. Guess I am an old-fashioned romantic haha.

Glad to hear you guys are finally getting married though! Congrats Lisa!

:rotfl: Love your engagement story! Cant wait to here more!
Thank you!

Oh yes, we do things like that often - like what do you want for supper, etc. etc... Never in a million years did I think the proposal would go that way :lmao:

:rotfl2: Well, I probably would have died if it went that way years ago. Sometimes I still say that I am going to give the ring back and make him do it right...we actually laugh about it together though so its all good...

And thanks for the congrats!

Thanks for subscribing. I hope I have some more good details (and not boring ones) to share. :goodvibes

I'm going to skip ahead a little and ask for some advice.

We are toying with the idea an at home October wedding (09). The possible colors I want to use are driving me nuts! I am a blue girl and sky blue/ice blue has been part of my vision forever (my vision has been lt blue with lt pink or lt lilac & silver accents). The problem is - light blue may not be the best color for a fall wedding - especially if it is an at home wedding here in New England (I have no doubt it would work in Disney though).

Now I love the fall colors, but its just not what I envisioned. October is not set in stone, but it works for so many reasons, so I am trying to think of some color schemes that will satisfy my tastes to see if I (and the wedding monster - the one in my head) can really work with this potential date.

Like many other brides here, I am determined to do things my own way. I'm not necessarily a big rule breaker, I just prefer to think of them as guidelines only. That said, I could use sky blue or pink or whatever I wanted. But I want to make it work and "feel" right.

Today I am thinking maybe Navy. Navy with maybe a dark rasberry or wine and maybe some soft pink accents. I know these colors do not scream fall, but I was thinking darkening them up will be a bit more seasonal while still keeping it personalized and defying the rules!

Any thoughts or suggestions?

My suggestion for colors - do whatever you want! My wedding (ten years ago - GAAAAAA!) was in March, but I ended up with Christmas colors, since my favorite color is green and DH's favorite color is red. It worked for us, and we just ignored or came up with witty retorts to the obvious questions that followed the announcement of our colors. Don't set your color scheme based on the season. It's YOUR wedding, no matter when it's held - so make sure it's something that you and DF (but mostly you :lmao: ) will cherish for the years to come!

Good luck!

how did i miss this? congratulations!!!!!!!

i think that any color you want will be fine. i had yellow in january..

i wish my husband thought that diamonds were an easy out birthday present (my bday is on fri)...

I love Christmas colors! I bet your wedding was beautiful. Thank you.

First off - an early Happy Birthday to you :yay: And thanks for the congrats. Your wedding colors worked beatifully. I think you can get away with so much more at Disney and other warm weather locations - but the way you decorated would have worked anywhere. And like you both said, weddings are your own so I need to get past the whole seasonal thing.

I had a revelation on colors this morning. Its funny how these things just come to you. Someone mentioned ivory to me in another thread - I think it was OceanGoddess or cesca (sorry, I need to catch up and double check), but anyways the ivory got me thinking. Pastel blue is my favorite and I have had my heart set on it using it, not navy. I am now thinking of ivory and gold with light blue (ivory gown, bridal party in lt blue all ivory flowers w/gold accents) and then just a hint of cranberry accents - maybe literally using cranberries in the centerpieces. My friend recently worked at a wedding where the bride had white pumpkins in her decor (real pumpkins) - it made me think maybe I could incorporate small ivory ceramic pumpkins into the mix and maybe some larger ivory pumpkins (like the craft ones they sell - maybe paint them ivory and spray with glitter??) for floral arrangements for the ceremony location, etc... Once these ideas came to me, I had a flood of ideas that followed and it all feels right. The ivory and gold are nice warm colors that will work for the fall, the pumpkins and cranberries obviously work wonderfully for the season, and I can throw my light blue in there just because I want to and I think it will be perfect! We shall see in time how it all plays out.

In other news I finally got myself a job. I accepted an offer today and am awaiting all the details. This will of course limit the time I can spend on the Dis, but fortunately I have lots of time for my own plans. My plan is to bridge the gap from my proposal story to the present on here in the next day or so - not much more to tell - and then update any current happenings, toss around ideas and ask questions going forward.

Thanks for hanging in there with me - looking forward to getting my hands dirty with some planning :rotfl:

I'll try to bridge the gap between my proposal last August until now.

Let's see - I was layed off from my job last summer so I've had lots of time on my hands. I am normally a very busy person. And although I completely understand why we had decided to wait a while before setting a date, the planner/organizer/crafter in me wanted to get busy. The thought of the extra time I had while unemployed just slipping me by was driving me crazy. I figured the least I could do was get organized, do some research and figure out what might be the best options for our wedding. Of course, this brought me here to the Dis :rotfl:

Actually, I had found the board in the past and have learned so much about Disney. But my curiousity about a Disney Wedding led me to the wedding forum. I have learned so much, have some fabulous ideas and am so grateful.

At this point it looks as though we will be having an at home wedding with some Disney touches and a Disneymoon. As much as I would love to have the wedding in Disney, it seems to make the most sense for us not to. Between my new job and the limited vacation time there and a few immediate family members who may not be able or willing to travel (and ones we'd be heartbroken not to have with us) we feel it best to have the festivities at home. We figure we can then leave the stress of it all behind and take off to the World after and enjoy a magical celebration, just the two of us.

In other news, I received a lovely surprise yesterday for Valentine's Day. Completely out of the blue and with no clue at all it was coming, DF walked over to me as I sat on the couch, got down on his knee, and proposed all over again. He brought tears to my eyes. I was almost speechless, but I did manage to say 'yes' again and thanked him for being so great. And we made the date we'd been toying with official - October 17, 2009. Yes, it's a ways away, but it leaves time for the many activities we are involved in, an upcoming show I am anticipating dancing in, busy times of the year for us, and most importantly time to plan and save.

Congrats! Your original proposal sounds much like mine. I tease him all the time that I was wearing my ring a couple of days before someone asked me how he proposed. I couldn't answer them. It hit me that he never did! We had been talking about getting married, and we were shopping around, looking at rings. We found one we both liked, and he bought it. I had it on that day, never realizing that he never asked me to marry him:confused3 . We have been married almost a year, and to this day he has still never asked me to marry him! Says that if he ever wants out, he can claim the wedding wasn't his idea:lmao:

:lmao: Got to love those men of ours! In any case, congrats on your first year of marriage. :flower3:

Well, I have been super busy trying to adjust to the working life. At this point I'm NOT adjusting :cool2: . And more importantly this working thing is totally cutting into my DIS time. I have so much catching up to do in everyone's PJ's & TR's - I feel like I'll never be able to read them all, but I am trying!!

I wanted to share some pictures. Again, sorry they are big - not as big as the previous ones. I am learning how to resize but I still don't have it quite right yet.

I finally was able to get some of the ring:

And these are pictures of the engagement announcements I made and sent out last August. They are super informal as I was in a crafty mood. I only sent them to immediate family and a few of my close friends. I did it more for the fun of it than anything else...

Thanks!! If the effect they've had on me is any indication, I'm certain their incredible talents will rub off on you as well :wizard:

Thanks. I have been finding little bits of time to read here & there, just not post much.

I actually have a picture of a picture LOL to share. I just need to get it loaded onto my photobucket account. Its a picture I took of an invitation and cake I found in a bridal magazine a while ago - probably over a year ago - that is my inspiration for the theme I am shooting for. I'll try to get it posted tomorrow.

Here's the picture of the inspiration of the potential theme for our wedding. I think these designs will work well with the wish upon a star/dreams come true idea I have...

I love the colors and I love that the designs are simple yet pretty. We'll see...
