Friday 15th December - Epcot
Isnt jet lag just the greatest! DS was pacing the floor by 4.30am and woke me for a chat. We spent several minutes discussing the merits of not waking me in the middle of the night if he wanted to live to New Year and he went back to bed. By 6.30 we were all wide awake so we opened our Christmas cards bought from home and put up our Walgreens tree.
By 7.30 we were showered and ready for an early breakfast. The hotel provides a good continental buffet (pastries, muffins, cereals, toast, waffles, fruit etc) but a previous stay here taught us you needed to be down there reasonably early to get a good selection as there are always a lot of picnic makers (hasten to add here none of them British) who use up a lot of the food making lunches for their extended families.
As the hotel is only 1 junction up the I4 it took only a few minutes to arrive at Epcot. We had decided to buy our tickets on arrival at the gate as we have found on previous trips that we end up paying for stuff we dont want or need and so spend over the odds. As we had no plans for water parks or park hopping etc we just got 10 day magic your way tickets for $216.
We are very much a family of tradition so our first ride had to be Soarin. We were pleased to find it was only a 15 minute wait on standby so queued it (only took 5 mins) It was as good as ever even though we were on row 2 and got fastpasses for not much later (9.45am) for row 3 (rubbish too many feet up above was distracting)
We went over to the new Nemo ride (walk on) DD & I loved it (very cute) DS was not so impressed. How do they get them in the big aquarium at the end? then took a stroll back to another favourite Test Track again pretty much a walk on and Mission Space where we did the green chickens version (probably wont do it again we hate the full G version you feel too ill and the none moving version is just not worth it)
We stopped off at Mousewear to check out what was new on the merchandise front (as usual pretty much everything) then it was over to Honey I shrunk the audience and Journey with Figment.
I suppose at this point being typically English I should mention the weather which had kind of taken us by surprise. It was a lot warmer than on our Christmas trip the previous year and I did begin to worry we had packed all the wrong clothing as it seemed shorts would have been fine this time.
I kept expecting the crowds to catch up with us but they never appeared and it was lovely enjoy a leisurely stroll around World Showcase which began with a quick refuel stop at McDonalds where we shared some nuggets to keep us going until lunch. We saw Pere Noel in Canada (enchanting) and France (far too young to be believable) and laughed at the price of chocolate in England $2.25 for small bag of chocolate buttons.
We had two lunch stops Morocco for the kids (lamb kebab for DD & pizza for DS) and Japan for DH & Me (Shogun special Teryaki chicken & shredded beef) them stopped off for some shoppin in Italy where DD got a crystal ring and USA for gingerbread
DS earned himself a massive telling off from his dad in Germany for goose stpping round one of the shops Basil Fawlty style complete with finger under nose for Hitler style moustache. (to this day I have no idea what possessed him or where the idea came from. I suppose sometimes just being a 10 year old boy is enough) Fortunately DD & I were elsewhere at the time and so are clear of any association with DS. Poor DH just looked horrified
This pic was taken just before the incident should have known by DS's expression he was planning something
The Chinese acrobats were as good as ever. I cant help feeling sorry for them though, their trainers never smiled once and made them repeat any tricks they did wrong time and again until they got them right.
We made short work of Norway and Mexico then went off to see the tree lighting ceremony. As it was nearly 6,00 when we got there we were a way back in the crowds so couldnt see as well as I would have liked but it was very sweet and I did get a little teary eyed at Silent Night. Then it was back to Mexico for our first ADR at the San Angel Inn.
Sorry bit dark but you get the idea
Ive always been more than a little in love with the Mexican pavillion and it had been a dream of mine to eat in the San Angel since our first visit. Unfortunately as DS is a picky eater we had put it off until he was old enough not to make a fuss.
We had a lovely central table and were soon tucking into the nachos and spicy salsa. I would love to say the rest of the meal was as nice but it was decidedly ....... average. DH, DD & I all had Pollo a las Rajas (chicken with red peppers, onions, chorizo & melted cheese) the chicken was lovely but the cheesy sauce was very rich & sickly and the rice it came with was nothing special at all. DS ordered a chicken & cheese quesillada, as he is picky we said no rice or re-fried beans. So they bought him just that a huge plate with something no bigger than a crispy pancake in the middle. His face was a picture. More than a little disappointed we decided to skip dessert (bill was $79) then headed of for the exit stopping off at Spaceship Earth for our last ride of the day then went on to Publix pick up some beers & ice cream which we ate in the room while watching some TV before bed
