My spouse doesn't cruise with with me but he fell in love with the souvenir I brought myself back from my first cruise: Grand Cayman Rum. Of course I only learned this when I went to make myself the rare pina colada. This next cruise I'm headed back to GC and want to pick up two bottles for each of us. I know I have to have them stored until the end of the cruise and yes I have to fit them in my checked luggage. Planning to take Southwest so luggage shouldn't be an issue.

Is there a question here?

Go here to find the exact legal answer for your question:

https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/544/kw/alcohol allowance

"As a general rule, travelers to Caribbean Basin Initiative (CBI)countries are allowed a $800 duty-free exemption on their return to the U.S. You may include two liters of alcoholic beverages with this $800 exemption, as long as one of the liters was produced in one of the CBI countries."

one of the CBI countries.
Those would be:
There are 17 CBERA beneficiary countries:

  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • Aruba
  • The Bahamas
  • Barbados
  • Belize
  • British Virgin Islands
  • Curacao
  • Dominica
  • Grenada
  • Guyana
  • Haiti
  • Jamaica
  • Montserrat
  • St. Kitts and Nevis
  • St. Lucia
  • St. Vincent and the Grenadines
  • Trinidad and Tobago

DH and I have exceeded our limit and have never been asked to pay duty. We are always honest about it. Although I think that was also the time we had to pay duty on a watch, so they "forgave" all the other items, going for the item with the highest duty

We were unaware of the customs issue on a southern Caribbean cruise. We were following the Disney rule of 2 bottles per person per PORT. We ended up with 8 bottles of rum between 2 adults. I think the ship does need to be a little more clear up front about this as we were not aware until the last night when we got the customs form. Fortunately, our nice table mates claimed a couple of bottles each for us and we made it through customs cleanly.

And we highly recommend the Shipwrecked Spiced Rum...if you love rum.

As far as I know it's two bottles of WINE per person per port and you don't have to hand it over.

You mixed up the cruiseline rule of what you can bring onboard to drink onboard (two 6packs of beer or two bottles of wine per person, and you can replenish at each port), and the international customs laws involving liquor to bring home.

I’ll ask the silly question. Where does Grand Cayman fall in this list?

I just talked to a CM from DCL today about this on the phone today. It’s 2 wine or champagne OR one six pack of beer per person at each port. This does not get turned in when you board and can be consumed in your stateroom.

Yes, the amount of alcohol any person 21 and over may bring onboard the ship (on embarkation and from ports of call) is 2 bottles of wine./champagne OR 6 beers.

This is in no way related to what the duty-free limits are.

If you purchase hard alcohol in ports (as some do for souvenirs) it must be checked upon boarding the ship that day (in ports of call) to be picked up on debarkation morning. That alcohol will be what customs is looking for/at.

PrincessShmoo explained it very well. Disney's regulations on what you can bring ON their ships is totally different than what US Customs lets you bring into the country.

Once you disembark the ship, for good, anything and everything (from T-shirts to a diamond tennis bracelet) is subject to US Customs (CBP). The Mouse is no longer involved.

At that point you need to know the US CBP regulations on what is duty-free and what is subject to duty and fines.

We didn’t know about being able to bring on additional wine/beer at each port the first time we cruised. We are excited about this as we like to try wine/beer from different places. It’s nice to have something in our room while we get ready for dinner
