My DS was diagnosed with strep throat on Monday and is on a liquid antibiotic...the container that it is in is pretty big, much bigger than the 4 oz (or whatever it is) that is allowed as a carry-on. Am I going to run into trouble trying to bring it as part of the carry-on luggage? Do I need a note from the doc?

Any advice is appreciated!

No you will not. All you have to do is show the security guards and because it is prescription they will let you go without question. We had to do this the last two trips and as long as we showed them it wasn't a problem at all. Hope he feels better!

jgazda is correct.

Here's the link to the TSA's website on that topic.

...Additionally, we are continuing to permit prescription liquid medications and other liquids needed by persons with disabilities and medical conditions. This includes: All prescription and over-the-counter medications (liquids, gels, and aerosols) including petroleum jelly, eye drops, and saline solution for medical purposes...

If he is old enough, perhaps you can get the dr. to do a perscription for the chewables. You might have to pay for another perscription but it is so much easier to carry and to take on a trip!!

We went in 06 and my daughter was diagnosed with strep throat the night before we left. I took the prescription in my carry-on without a problem. By the time we came home, all three kids had strep throat and I had three bottles of liquid antibiotic without any problems!!!

In '07 DS got sick right before a trip too. He was on Amox. and Benydrl. I put them both in a small cooler bag (it was a bottle bag that I had gotten when I was pregnant from one of the formula companies-perfect size for this) along with Ped's #. Then I clipped it to my purse for easier access at the check point. When we got to security, I told the pre-screener what I had and he said no problem, just send it through with the rest of your items.

Pretty much anything medical can and will be allowed in carry-on bags. Last year I was temporarily on injections and took the meds and syringes on board without any problem. The TSA people know what's legit and what's suspicious.
