I have officially been diagnosed with a torn meniscus. I have been told by my Dr. I might need a wheelchair or skooter for my upcoming trip. I would like to rent a wheelchair as needed. My concern is the walk to the tram from the car. Is it possible to ask the parking attendant if I may park close to the tram? I have a special brace that was prescribed by my DR. I know this is a silly question but I am not concerned about getting around the park just walking the walk to get into the park. I know once I am in the park I will be able to get the wheelchair if needed.

With that type of injury, I can't stress enough that you should rent an ECV from offsite. The amount of walking at WDW (6-8 miles per day) just isn't normally encountered in daily life, and there is no point in being in additional pain during your vacation.

I also recommend getting a temporary disability placard from your DMV (different states vary on what is required). With the placard, you'll be able to park in the handicapped parking area, eliminating the need for the tram.

without the offsite ECV rental it will be a walk from handicapped parking at MK to TTC and no tram service just for info and usually we have not found wheelchairs in the corral to get to gate

I know you're looking into an off-site rental, but yes. There are medical parking spaces at the end of every aisle, closest to where the trams pick up. They're for guests without HP parking capability but who have mobility issues. Just tell each CM you encounter that you need medical but not handicap parking. You should be more or less following the bulk of traffic.

Thank You!! Going to AK and I think what I will do is see how it goes on Sat. If I am in unbearable pain when I get home I will just end up renting during my 7 day stay in 21 days.

Thank You everyone for your response. I am going to look into renting an ECV.

You may be like me (and lots of others of us), who really hesitate to be "needing" an ECV. I was in so much pain once, I finally broke down and rented one in the parks one trip, I actually cried I was so mortified to need one. But you know what? I survived! Next trip I rented one from off site, and like others here, it helped so much, such an advantage over in-park rentals.

Yes I am a go,go,go type of park person. This torn meniscus is really weighing me down. :guilty::crutches:

Lots of folks use ECVs/scooters at WDW who never use them anywhere else in the world. Seriously.

Just remember that using the ECV while you are at WDW is no different than using any other tool in your daily life. Do you use a carrier pigeon to send a text message? I bet you don't - you use your smartphone, and that's an example of using a tool to make your life better, easier and/or more efficient. Just like I wear glasses to see, or my grandpa used hearing aids to boost his hearing, we use tools to accomplish certain tasks, right?

You are using the ECV as a tool to supplement your ambulatory abilities while at Disney World. (or, put more bluntly, to help you walk!)

That's all. So, get on that thing, and ride. Wave to everyone like the visiting Royalty you know you are, and have a great time! I can tell you from years of personal experience that you will have every bit as much fun, the sun will shine as brightly, the Mickey bars will taste exactly the same, and the fireworks every night are still as memorable.

I hope you have a great trip! As someone who remembers her mensiscuses (yep, both 'em) fondly from when they were where they were supposed to be, I certainly understand your dilemma.
