So in Writing class today (yep, Writing. Not Sociology, lolol.) we had to write an essay arguing our opinion on 'Should the government limit the number of children a couple or single person can have?' She came up with this topic because of the whole 'octomom' debocle.

So, your opinions?

No. It's a persons right to have as many as children as they wish. If they have the resources to look after 6 kids, they can have fun.
We've had a discussion along these lines before and it went badly.
Except for the poster was actually proposing something a little less humane.
She's not around anymore.

I think they should. A single parent should not be able to have 14 kids. I think that the regulations should be based on income, family members willing to help with childcare, and the mental stability of the parent(s) however.

No, I don't think they should.
If they can't care for their children, then that's a problem. But that could go for one kid, not just a huge amount. But I don't think they should go making laws limiting the amount of a children someone can have. That just isn't right to me.

Other.
I think the government has no right regulating the number of children a parent can have. The government tries to take away some parental rights as it is already.
I do think, however, the government should look into whether the parent can afford the child or not. Part of the reason we're in this recession is due to dumb butt parents who can't afford their kids. They sign up for state benefits, try to cheat the system, and the rest of the taxpayers are the ones who get hurt. If a parent can't afford the child (and I don't mean set for life - I mean state benefits wise) the child should be taken into foster care until they can be cared for. It would be better for the child AND the parent.

JMO.

I think they should if you are already on government assistance.

I might be unique when I say, yes they should. It should be based on income, mental stability, and a supporting family. The world is wildly over populated right now.

People are having kids so they can stay here (immigrants). Mooch off the system. Have people to love them. Because they think it'd be fun. And honestly, it's selfish.

When you're already deep deep in debt and are on welfare, I don't think you should be able to have a pile of kids. I'm looking out for the economy here, the government is paying out their *** for all the kids.

I realize that this would make the government control yet another aspect of our life, but it may be for the greater good. I know my argument has holes in it, so try and take it for what it is.

I agree with you full heartedly :thumbsup2

Exactly

That is one aspect of life I would have no problem with the government controlling. I am so sick of the welfare system being cheated. My friend had a baby last January and she is ALREADY talking about having another kid in the next year or 2 when she can't get by without food stamps. No way should she be allowed to have another child while on welfare.

I guess it depends on a number or different factors.

The only example I can think of is China's One Child Policy because of the rapid population growth in the country. The government pays for things like child care, education, etc. if a family has one child. If they have more then one, then the family have to pay everything for themselves. I think the only exception is a family living in rural areas can have another child if their first born is a girl, because the guys work in the fields.

I'll just choose other because I don't really have an opinion on it.

Nope, I dont think there should be a limit on children. Couples should be able to have as many as they want.

As for someone like Octomom, somebody should of given her psychiatric care before implanting her with embryos. However it was her choice if she wanted/didnt want children.

No. The government has no right to get into that type of a person's affairs.

And, we'd become just like China.

I chose other for these reasons:

If you are already on government welfare/assistance, you should not be allowed more than one child. Anything more would add strain to the already struggling system and it would be most likely harmful to the child because they couldn't be adequetly cared for.

In cases like the Octomom's, I think it's horribly wrong. No doctor should give fertility treatments and implatations to a woman who already has six kids. She obviously doesn't have a fertility problem. She took away time from that doctor that could have been used to help a woman (or couple) who had no children but desperately wanted one.

However, if you are in good financial standing there should be no reason you shouldn't be able to have as many kids as you want.

However, that being said. On a personal level, I think anything more than four kids (unless like, you had two and then had triplets or something, that can't be helped) is ridiculous. It's not for me. I think the Duggar's are people that don't deserve the attention they're getting. 18 (19?) kids is just waaaay too many. When you have so many kids that you (the parents) are delegating tasks of caring for a younger child to an older child instead of doing it yourself, that's just wrong. It's not showing love to your child. It's having another child show love to that child. It's wrong, to me.

Um, why shouldnt you have your kids help out once in a while? Maybe not every day, but it isn't wrong that they help with their younger brothers and sisters. Plus, camera's dont show alot of stuff so we dont really know how much the older kids are delegated.

If you have the love, support and finances, why not have 25 kids?:confused3

I agree.
I'd also like to point out that if our population growth continues at this rate then the Earth simply just won't be big enough or have enough resources (this is all from Al Gore's filmy thing we got forced to watch).

I can understand once in a while having them help out, but from what I understand the younger children are given "buddies" (the older children) who basically do everything a parent should do. Which I think is wrong. It's forcing the other kids to grow up too quickly.

And if you want 25 kids, can support them, love them equally, go for it. I won't stop you, but it's not something I see as practical. I mean, how do you go anywhere with 25 kids? I don't want to think about what a vacation would cost. Or how you would get them anywhere. You'd need like...four minivans, which would mean drivers because one person can't drive four different cars. The logistics of that many kids is lost on me. Plus, the strain it would put on the parent's psyche must be enormous.

Oh trust me, IM not planning on having 25 kids!! No way! That just isnt for me.

But, the logisitics of life are a challenge, but I guess some people care more about the kids and family than other things and that is ok, as long as the kids are well cared for.

The people I have a huge problem with are the ones without the finances so they rely on the government. Who gets to pay for those kids? You and me.

So should the government give these women free birth control?
