Lightsabers, Mouse Kisses and a Man in a Lucky Shirt! A January 2010 TR

CHAPTER 1, Part 2.....

Having completed the larger portion of our road trip the last part seemed to go rather quickly. The girls played with their toys, listened to music and the Magic Tree House Stoy CD Nat got at Wendy's, and then NAPPED!!! I updated my journal, played Sudoku and was kept amused by the interesting Billboards along the highway.

And I kept tally of vehicles off the road. Total: 5.

The weather had let up and the traffic was easy going through the city of St. Paul. We found our easily thanks to the great directions I had and we pulled into the parking lot of The Fairfield Inn at exactly 1:55pm CST!!! We breathed a collective sigh of relief that we had made it safe and sound. Ken and Emily stayed in the van to collect all the strewn garbage while Nat and I headed into the hotel lobby to do our check-in!

I stayed to nap. Emily stayed to clean.

Check in went smoothly. The desk clerk was Michael and he was quick, efficient and very friendly! He answered all my questions and we were checked in and ready to go in less than 5 minutes! Nat and I headed back to the van and we pulled around to the back side of the hotel to where the Park n Fly spaces were located. Ken found a spot right away and then we each grabbed a bag and headed in to find our room!

I did not like parking the van there. It wasn't suspicion of a crime spree against a 10 year old minivan. It was the ice.

I am forcefully for good parking practices. Maybe it is my military background. Maybe it's the fact I bashed in the door panel of my parent's van trying to parallel park. I *MUST* park properly, and grumble against those who can't. I would love to do this: http://xkcd.com/562/
(hint, for an extra joke, hold your mouse still over the comic panels)

So when I found A parking place there were uneven risen piles of ice at precisely the van's wheelbase. I *COULD* have parked too close to one of the other vehicles, but that would have been a self-inflicted lobotomy. So I took the easier route of fretting about the state of the tires for the whole trip.

I called my parents to let them know that we were there safely. The ghirls took off their shoes and hopped up on the bed and watched TV for a bit! (We have a TV but don't have cable or anything so TV is a big treat for them!)

I am not against television per se, I am against paying for it or stealing it. This leaves my children envying both those who are more affluent and those best described as chaotic neutral.

I then called Sheree (MNDisneyGirl) to let her know that we had arrived and to check on the status of our meet! Many of you already know that her girls were sick that day! She said that she would come to meet us on her own anyway! I was so excited to finally meet up with one of my Disser Pals!

We brought in all the luggage from the van and got organized for the evening. When we were ready we caught the 3pm shuttle over to the Mall of America! Of course we went right to the Disney Store! I needed to turn some of our cash into Gift Cards and the girls had some money they wanted to spend. Em bought a really cool TinkerBell ball and Natalie bought herself a rather large WALL-E plush!

By this time it was getting close to our meeting time with Sheree so we headed in the direction of the LEGO store! My girls were itchin to create some fast movin' cars and check out the Lego Statues!

My kids love Lego. Now I'm EXTRA bitter for a certain sibling saying I was too old to play with them at 13.

Oh, and I'm happy I have cool kids. At least, if you agree that Lego == cool.

We arrived exactly on time and who did I find waiting there for us? SHEREE!!!!! YAY!!! The girls gave her the gifts they had brought for Paige and Sarah and hugged her like they had known her for a lifetime already! SO sweet!

I was suspicious they were patting her down to pick her pockets.

We had a lovely time chatting and talking about just about everything under the sun! If her girls hadn't of been sick, I'll bet we could have chatted all day! Such a lovely lady she is! Alas her girls were quite under the weather and she needed to get home to be with them so we reluctantly parted ways with a promise to meet again on our return trip!

And you know what is amazing with these dis-board meets? They talk in acronyms out loud! I'm closer to ordering a frosted Marble layer cake in Mandarin than understanding those two women at full bore.

That is full speed, I did not, nor am not implying that they or their conversation was at all boring. Unintelligble, yes. Boring, no.

The girls were pert near desperate to find a washroom at this point so we scouted one out and then went to look at a map to see where we wanted to eat some dinner! Before Ken or I could get a word in edgewise, the girls had unanimously decided where we should eat! Can you guess what they chose?

Last year we tried Bubba Gump. I love seafood. I could eat it daily. Kim on the other hand is slightly alergic. And so last year she was slightly red from the mild case of hives all over her body. That means no seafood for Ken on Disney trips :(

RAINFOREST CAFE!!!

As we walked into the gift shop area, the girls spotted the Frog out for a meet n greet and dashed over to say hello and a have their photos taken! After that we were seated rather quickly and began to peruse the menu to decide on what we should eat!

I had a very yummy Turkey Wrap...so HUGE, but SO GOOD, I am almost embarrassed to admit that I ate the Whole Thing!!!

Ken had the Calypso Salad which we were told was a NEW item on the menu! He declared it to be THE BEST salad he had EVER eaten and only shared a few bites!

That is because the salad was 50% candy from the caramelized pecans and accompanying sauce.

Emily had the Mini Rascal burgers and Nat had the Mini Hotdogs! They both enjoyed their meals and finished just about eveything on their plates! I think maybe Ken and I had a few of their fries!

We decided to skip dessert because we knew we would eating A LOT of dessert in the week to come! We were finished at 5:30pm and had a bit of a browse through the humungus gift shop!

The mall was open until 7 that night so we decided to take advantage of the time that we had to explore a few shops. We hit The Barbie Store, The American Girl store, Bath & Body works and Emily even got to try out a Magic wand at MagicQuest! She just recently finished reading the Lord of the Rings trilogy with Ken so she is ALL about Wizards and Elfs and Dwarfs and such right now!

I would like to take a moment here and point out how good of a man I am. I did not drag them into the kitchen stores, but I wanted to. Apple store, nah-ah. I did the shopping with my girls because that is what made them happy.

I WAS hoping for future considerations, like, maybe a Monorail set.

After all our exploring it was just about 7pm so we headed out to catch our shuttle and head back to the hotel! When we got back the girls had their showers and put on their jammies and were in bed by 8:30pm! Ken and I each took turns going to the business centre to use the computer to check our email and I posted on Shawna's (DisneyMommy3) TR that we had arrived in Minneapolis safely.

I was not so concerned about email as posting this to my blog: http://kenhorton.blogspot.com/2010/01/bossy-is-impolite-way-to-describe.html

It was about planning for the trip as a family.

When I got back to the room, Em was having a bit of a hard time falling asleep so I got ready for bed and snuggled with her for a bit. I ended up falling asleep too and didn't wake until our alarms went off the next morning!

My parenting strategy of criticizing her until she slept apparently wasn't working. This time.

Up next: Hooray, Hooray, it's Disney Day!

Yeah, I can agree with that.

CHAPTER 2: Hooray, Hooray, It's Disney Day!!!

I woke up at about 4:15am, more than an hour before I needed to get up! I knew that it would be a long day so I tried my very best to go back to sleep. I dozed on and off until about 530 and then got up and got in the shower. When I was done, Ken and the girls were up and moving about!

Ken had his shower and I helped the girls get dressed and we were all ready to go at 6am! The girls and I headed to the breakfast room to grab something to eat while Ken took our over night bag out to the van. We were scheduled to depart on the 6:30 am shuttle to MSP Airport!

Nat stuck to comfort food and had a bowl of instant oatmeal and some OJ. Em had a yogurt and some cereal. I had a yogurt, a banana and a bowl of cereal. Ken sauntered in and sat himself down to a breakfast worthy of a champion! He had 3 boiled eggs, 2 yogurts, a banana, an orange and some raisins!

DSC03825.jpg

I headed to the Ladies room and when I came out our luggage had been loaded on the shuttle and we were ready to go! It was 6:28am! The shuttle to MSP took about 6 minutes and we were dropped off at the Humphrey Terminal where Sun Country is located.

We hauled all our bags inside and got in line for check in. Everything went super smoothly and we were on our way up to security within 10 minutes! The Sun Country staff team on duty that morning were all so kind, friendly and helpful! They were asking the girls about where we were going and giving them high fives and telling them to have an awesome trip!

Security was not busy and we were through with no problems in less than 10 minutes. Em had forgotten to dump out a bit of water from her water bottle so the TSA agent just dumped it out and gave us back our bottle! So nice!

Once through we found our gate and sat down to get ourselves all organized for the flight! It was exactly 7:00am at that point! When we were settled, I went in search of coffee! I found a Dunn Bros. Kiosk a little ways down from our gate and picked up some of that yummy goodness for Ken and me!

DSC03826.jpg

When I returned, the girls were asking to go to the little play area which was just across the way from our gate! They played there for about 15 minutes and then we heard the preboard call, which for my children, means IT IS TIME TO USE THE BATHROOM!!!So all 3 of us went to the washroom and then while they went to have one more slide on the play place, I filled up our water bottles at the water fountain.

DSC03829.jpg

DSC03830.jpg

DSC03831.jpg

Boarding went smoothly and we were soon in our seats. Emily and I were in Row 5, seats A & B. Ken and Nat were right behind us in Row 6 in seats A & B!!! There was a bit of a delay in our take off as first there was a bit of trouble in detaching from the jetway and then we had to deice the wings!

DSC03832.jpg

We finally got moving and our take off happened at 8:25am! A bit late but at least we were on our way! Captain announced that our anticipated arrival time in Orlando would be at 12:15pm(EST)! We were finally leaving winter behind and heading for some sunshine!

The next 3 hours went fairly smoothly. The girls were so good! They read books, coloured, took turns using Ken's PDA to play games, ate their snacks, rested (Nat actually Napped for a bit) and both had a couple turns up at the washroom. Ken read to Natalie and took pictures and I took notes in my journal, read the in flight magazine and did some Sudoku puzzles! We had an empty seat beside us so it was nice to have a bit of extra elbow room!

The time went quickly and before we knew it the Captain was announcing that we would be starting our decent! We double and triple checked to make sure we had everything! After last year's forgetting of Emily's camera, we were not going to leave ANYTHING behind!

DSC03847.jpg

DSC03848.jpg

We landed at 12:14 and got to the gate at 12:23! The jetway was removed and we were cleared for exit! There was no holing us back now! We were outta there! The forward motion was stopped only for a brief minute to allow Natalie to use the washroom! We got to the Mini Monorail and were on in about 30 seconds! The girls were so excited to be on the FIRST Monorail!!!

DSC03853.jpg

DSC03854.jpg

DSC03857.jpg

Once we stepped off in the Main terminal we went down the escalators and located DME without a problem. I had our DME booklet all ready and we were scanned in and showed our line in less than a minute after arriving! We were the second family in line for POFQ!!!!!

DSC03860.jpg

DSC03861.jpg

We waited for maybe 5 minutes and then were ushered outside to our DME transport! Ken helped get the bags stored under the bus and the girls and I boarded the bus!

DSC03863.jpg

Continued in next post.....

CHAPTER 2: PART 2

The people who were ahead of us in line had a stroller and 2 small kids so they were taking their time in getting on the bus so.....WE GOT FRONT ROW SEATS!!!!! Primo picture taking location for the WDW arch!!! WooHoo!
We probably waited on the bus for about 10-15 mins and finally left the airport at 1:03pm!

DSC03872.jpg

The bus was not even close to being full! There were maybe 5-6 families on board. The driver announced that it would be 25-35 minutes until our first stop! I didn't have to wait long to find out what that first stop would be – POFQ!!! YAY!!!

The ride was so fun and so fast. The girls really enjoyed watching the little video of Mickey and Friends. At the appropriate time, Ken was able to take these pictures!

DSC03884.jpg

DSC03885.jpg

What a sight for sore eyes! I seriously felt like I was coming home! What a wondrous feeling! It ended up being only 25 minutes until we got to POFQ cause our camera says that these next photos were taken at 1:28pm!

DSC03886.jpg

DSC03887.jpg

I hopped off the bus with a word to the girls to stay and help Dad with the bags and I boogied into that Registration Hall as quickly as I could go! The door was opened for me and I was welcomed “Home”! I found my way to the Online Check In Desk and we were checked in with all our stuff in less than 5 minutes! There was NOBODY else in line!!!

DSC03888.jpg

DSC03889.jpg

DSC03891.jpg

So I gathered my family and we went off in search of our home for the week! It took us less than 3 minutes to find our room! It was SO CLOSE to the Main building!

Building 4, room 4223 on the second floor was where we would lay our heads and stash our stuff for the next 7 nights! I asked the troops to wait for a teensy second so I could snap some pics while the room was still in pristine condition! Here is what I took:

We were also chosen to receive a bounceback affer, but we chose not to take advantage of it!

DSC03899.jpg

DSC03900.jpg

I let them in after just a few moments and we immediately turned on the tube to our Fave Disney Gal, Stacey! If any of you followed along on our TR from Last's years trip, you will know that we were lucky enough to have actually met Stacey! We wanted to see if we could recognize the scenes they were filming when we met up with her!

We didn't hang around too long though! We had a ticket for this day and the plan was to head to MK for the afternoon and evening! We got cleaned up a bit and did a wee bit of organizing and then prepared to head out for the rest of the day!

Up next: Let the Magic Begin.......

This is the woman who finds rolling over to kiss me goodbye at 7am a chore. Mind you maybe it's not the time of day so much as the kissing...

In other words, they stayed in relative comfort indoors while I whicked away the rest of the moisture in my hair via icy sublimation.

I needed the calories to recover from the cold. That's what I keep telling myself. That argument lost strength in Disney though...

Emily doing an impersonation of an evil villian.
DSC03821.jpg

DSC03825.jpg

Wall-E somehow doesn't look happy here.

I headed to the Ladies room and when I came out our luggage had been loaded on the shuttle and we were ready to go! It was 6:28am! The shuttle to MSP took about 6 minutes and we were dropped off at the Humphrey Terminal where Sun Country is located.

For once I was NOT selected for special “pat down”. I'm either a dead ringer for someone wanted or my masculine magnatizm only works in airports. On Male security guards.

I tried my best to pass off as a cultured business traveller, drinking my coffee, reading “Crime and Punishment”. Intervening in the kid's disputes on who would get my PDA gave me away.

No where else in life do those two concentrate so hard as when playing a game on that PDA.
DSC03826.jpg

When I returned, the girls were asking to go to the little play area which was just across the way from our gate!
The bickering had not stopped so she wisely dragged them away to burn off some excitement and engery.

They played there for about 15 minutes and then we heard the preboard call, which for my children, means IT IS TIME TO USE THE BATHROOM!!!So all 3 of us went to the washroom and then while they went to have one more slide on the play place, I filled up our water bottles at the water fountain.

Boarding went smoothly and we were soon in our seats.

Kim and I differ on boarding strategies. She likes to board right after the last wheechair. I like to board after the last passenger. I would rather be the jerk who saunters on the the sardine can last after lounging in the hyper-lumber support benches in the terminal.

Emily and I were in Row 5, seats A & B. Ken and Nat were right behind us in Row 6 in seats A & B!!! There was a bit of a delay in our take off as first there was a bit of trouble in detaching from the jetway and then we had to deice the wings!

I forgot to mention while I was waiting I saw this yokel arrive with a top-gun style leather jacket and epilets on his shoulders. I thought “That dork thinks he could be the pilot with that lame jacket on”.

I was actually looking at our pilot.

We finally got moving and our take off happened at 8:25am! A bit late but at least we were on our way! Captain announced that our anticipated arrival time in Orlando would be at 12:15pm(EST)! We were finally leaving winter behind and heading for some sunshine!

Ummm, Honey? The sun does shine in our city in the winter. The only place it doesn't is on the far side of the moon and where lobbyists get there logic.

The next 3 hours went fairly smoothly. The girls were so good! They read books, coloured, took turns using Ken's PDA to play games, ate their snacks, rested (Nat actually Napped for a bit)
Bonus second use for PDA: Play calming “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” soundtrack for hyper kid.
and both had a couple turns up at the washroom. Ken read to Natalie and took pictures and I took notes in my journal, read the in flight magazine and did some Sudoku puzzles! We had an empty seat beside us so it was nice to have a bit of extra elbow room!

Is it just me or does that look scream “BUSTED!”
DSC03834.jpg

I swear that was Kim's face the whole flight down. I thought she had lockjaw. It was almost a Kabuki mask. Unnerving.
DSC03835.jpg

The time went quickly and before we knew it the Captain was announcing that we would be starting our decent! We double and triple checked to make sure we had everything! After last year's forgetting of Emily's camera, we were not going to leave ANYTHING behind!

You forgot that we left our dignity when I took a final look under the seats while the rest of the plane waited for me.

Kim's face, unmoved.
DSC03854.jpg

DSC03857.jpg

Excited is not what those faces say. They say “onward, and damned be the consequences.”

Except Kim, whose face is still stuck to “OMGOMGOMGOMG”

Once we stepped off in the Main terminal we went down the escalators and located DME without a problem. I had our DME booklet all ready and we were scanned in and showed our line in less than a minute after arriving! We were the second family in line for POFQ!!!!!

DSC03861.jpg

Come to think of it, I don't think I saw her eat. Her face was frozen like that. Wall-e's lips moved more often.

We waited for maybe 5 minutes and then were ushered outside to our DME transport! Ken helped get the bags stored under the bus and the girls and I boarded the bus!

DSC03863.jpg

She is still smiling, you can tell.

Continued in next post.....

I'm spending all my brownie points with these comments...

'Appropriate time'. I was sweating from the pressure. Kim said “Get me a good picture of the Arch.” Right. From a moving bus at 40 MPH I'm to get an in focus, solid shot.

I'm glad I read the Disney Magazine articles on photography before I left :D

10.5 years of marriage, a house where we have laboured (ok, so her DAD has laboured) to make it more comfy, the place of joy where are children have been growing up, that is “the place we are from”. Disneyworld is “home”.

Oh yes, and these pictures were taken while turning. 'Shakes' Horton didn't do too bad.

Up next: Let the Magic Begin.......

What? Flying in a metal tube wasn't magical? Me taking a photo that wasn't blurry wasn't magical?

You had fantastic travel mojo that day! And what a breeze at check-in! I hope that set the tone for the rest of your vacation.

I love POFQ... and we stayed in Building Four, second floor, too! So convenient to everything!

I'll bet the girls were hopping from foot to foot waiting for you to take those initial room pix!

Your hubby is too cute, making fun of your "Disney smile!" Mine teases me about that, too! We just can't help it, can we?! :cloud9:

Kathy

:lmao: Yes Dear, you are magical too! :rotfl2: Your humour is the most magical part of you! Keep it coming sweetie!

I sincerely hope that nobody gets in trouble at work tomorrow after spitting coffee on their PC screens from laughing! ;)

I think they were actually peeping in others peoples windows! :rolleyes1 Or trying to climb up on the railings! :scared: I could hear Ken muttering threats of bodily harm to them if their behaviour didn't improve! I tried to get the pics done as quick as possible, but apparently not quickly enough! ;)

Nope! Can't help the Disney Smile! I think I was almost nearly incoherent chattering like a monkey I was so excited!

HI! I just found your TR, I wanted to comment on you and your DH liking Arrested Development. DH and I love that series and we often rent the seasons DVDs and take them on vacation with us! We laugh and laugh! :)
Did you hear they are probably making a movie??

Love the TR so far and Love Timmy's!!! :)

:lmao:That was your pilot!!!! :rotfl2::rotfl:

I wisely am not drinking anything while I read this TR. When Ken gets going, I know I'm going to LOL!!
Great job with the pictures Mr. Steady! Mine never look that good from a moving vehicle!

POFQ looks great! If we ever have to go back to Moderate, that's next on our list! Not that DH will ever go back to Moderate now that he's had a taste of the Deluxe life!
I hope your low crowds, short lines mojo continues!!

YAY!!! :yay: More Arrested Development Fans! We own the first 2 seasons and are just waiting for Season 3 to come down in price a bit before we buy it! We have rented them all in the past but decided to buy it as it is one show that will stand the test of time!

They ARE making a movie! It is in production RIGHT NOW!!! It is supposed to be released later this year! :thumbsup2 We are so excited!!! That will be one movie we will be going to on Opening night!

Smart Woman Sheree! :thumbsup2 Ken has become a Deluxe snob too! He is bent on saving up enough $$$$$ to stay at The Poly for our next trip! So that pretty much means that it will be at least 2 years before we are back at Disney again!

You will just have to wait to find out about those crowds and lines!!! :goodvibes

I didn't notice your Disney smile until Ken so nicely pointed it out. :lmao:
And those pics of deicing the plane- I'm not sure you could get me on a plane that had to be de-iced before taking off!
POFQ looks like a wonderful resort...I might have to take a break from CBR and give it a try next time! :thumbsup2

Deicing isn't as scary as it seems! :) Living in Canada, if you do ANY travelling in the winter months, deicing happens about 98% of the time! It is absolutely necessary to maintain the safety of the plane and it's passengers! :goodvibes

I really enjoyed POFQ! I would definitely stay there again! It is small and quaint and the CMs are SO nice! I think I noticed that the people staying there were a bit more friendly too! Probably because they didn't have to walk so far to get their morning coffee! ;)

port orleans fq seems like such a nice place to stay. we stayed at riverside but fq seems nicer! it was a little confusing and we got lost a couple of times:rotfl2: cant wait to here about your first night, to me its the best night!

I'm here

Sorry I'm late to the party! Not sure how I missed that you started your TR. :confused3

Great start. What an adventure you had getting to Disney. So great to see that you made it to POFQ and are heading to MK! :thumbsup2 :goodvibes
