Lights of Winter gone?

They couldn't do that this year, as they have taken over Dicken's Christmas Carol this year. Bad form to cancel the holiday and then make "Disney's Chirstmas Carol" in the same year.

So Lights of Winter will become a fond memory of Christmas Past, just like the Country Bear Christmas show. Wish CA was closer so I could enjoy Haunted Mansion Holiday and Small World Holiday.

Who knows maybe the technology will become obsolete next year and we will lose Osbourne Spectacle of Lights. Have to keep CP and MVMCP since they charge extra for those.

I saw that recent too. Just did not want to be the one to break the news.... :sad2:

Disney has indeed confirmed the Lights of Winter have been permanantly retired.

The obsolete 'tech' excuse is really lame. You'd think they could come up with a better escuse than that...

It is a tech problem. The light switch broke and they cannot figure out how to replace it

This is not surprising. Every year Disney cuts back on decoations.

Wise up folks start spending your money elsewhere.

I own DVC and use it for lodging. More and more we are spending time offsite and eating offsite more too.

We are voting with our feet.

The Disney magic is fading fast!!!

Man, you said a mouthful....................:sad2:
And we agree with you totally!

Maybe they will be LED lights next year .

From what I'm hearing there's also no train in front of the American Adventure that was always there...

Add this lack of effort after the severely changed/lessened F&W festival this year and Epcot is going down in quality FAST

Well they can't blame the decision on cost - since their profits were just announced to be UP 18% the last quarter.

....as I said...have you noticed....

They take away the freebees but keep all the events which requite us to PAY.

That's the Disney way now!

I wonder if Fellow Castmember Bob has checked in on Mr. Cratchet and Tiny Tim??????

DH just announced - no more Christmas trip to WDW.

No silly - the fired the castmember who was responsible for plugging it in. Remember in March when we were told they were eliminating only the "dead wood".

Sadly, there is a bit of truth to this joke above....

Disney CORP profits rose 18%. Parks and Resorts DROPPED 17%. And you can bet that although Corp takes the Parks profits to prop up all its underperforming divisions, very little flows the other way...

Oh boy are YOU right about this and sadly, it's showing.

Good thing they are only shutting off the 30,000 lights at Epcot in a cost cutting move and not the 6 million at the Studios. Woops, I had better be quiet or someone is going to run over there and shut them off too.

People actually go to see the Osborne lights plus its sponsored. The lights at EPCOT were just decorations for EPCOT that didn't bring in extra people.

To call the Lights of Winter 'just decorations' would be like calling Epcot just an amusement park or Space Mountain just a roller coaster. Disney apparently made the same mistake in woefully underestimating the displays popularity and appeal.

But regardless - since when do people not go to see Christmas decorations??? Granted, the Osborne Lights are more of a stand-alone attraction while the Lights of Winter are part of the overall holiday experience of Epcot. It is very difficult or impossible to really determine how many people are attracted to Epcot (or WDW during the season) becuse of any one single element - particularly when that element (the Lights of Winter) are part of the total experience and not a ticketed event. Clearly, guests do visit the theme parks to see the decor and events. Take away part of that total 'package', and people suddenly have less reason to visit (and Epcot appears to have lost more than just the Lights of Winter).

I have to say that I did like the Arch Lights but they did make it hard to see the tree from Future World. I do hope that they do replace it with somethign to help with the Holiday Spirit.

Really?? Explain the total disappointment that hundreds of posters have expressed since the announcement. That along with all of the negative comments last year for the tree lighting having been removed. You can't be serious.

Another thing, Sylania (pretty big light manufacturer) just happens to be an Epcot sponsor. Think maybe they could pick up the tab here?

This is probably one of those things that some people like and some people don't. For me its one of those things that didn't really blend with Future World. It had a very retro feel to it. Hopefully they will replace them with something more interesting. And maybe move the display elsewhere.

Wow I am sad to hear this will no longer be part of Epcot.

I am not even going to tell my family. We are DVC members and they only go because it makes me happy. For the past three NYE visits, I have been hearing lets go to Atlantis next year, let's go on a cruise, etc. But I want to be at Disney on NYE like we have for the past ten years.

Maybe it really is time to find a new after Christmas vacation spot??
