Lights! Camera! Appetite! 7 Days, Starring A Reviewer & A Vegetarian!

Jiko

Because we didn't do any parks on our travel days, we ended up with one sit down meal to figure out what to do with. I decided to use it toward a Signature Dining Experience at Jiko on our second night. I chose Jiko because I had read tons of positive reviews and because they had the most interesting sounding vegetarian options for Matt. I'd also never been to this hotel before so I thought it would be nice to see something new!

We arrived at Animal Kingdom Lodge via a cheap cab ride. Turns out our 5:30 dinner reservation was the earliest reservation made, meaning the restaurant wasn't even open when we arrived about fifteen minutes early. They gave us a buzzer and we went to sit by the Flamingo pool outside. It wasn't long before we were called to our seats. Our hostess was adorable and talked about the Flower and Garden festival at Epcot, but our waiter wasn't nearly as talkative. He offered us some hot towels but it was very awkward...Matt took one and the guy just stood there watching him wipe his hands with it. But this didn't put a damper on the meal; we just laughed it off.

Despite being on the regular dining plan we decided to pay out of pocket for an appetizer. When I used this phrase with the waiter he said "What, are you going to pay with pennies or something? That's what it sounds like". Am I crazy? Is "out of pocket" not a common phrase? We use it all the time on the boards....anyway! We ordered the Crispy Savannah Rolls.

4621743267_273f88c150.jpg

These were basically egg rolls filled with corn, goat cheese, and bitter greens. A curry vinagarette was served on the side. The strongest flavours were the goat cheese and corn by far. I expected a bit more kick from these; they were certainly tasty, but mild. The little salad they're paired with was yummy too, so don't let that go to waste!

For our entrees Matt chose the vegetarian item of the moment, something called a Chakalaca, and I got the BBQ Beef Shortribs.

4621746177_0f548abd89.jpg

This is an item I hadn't seen on any of the Jiko menus I read. When we asked the waiter what it was he was less than helpful. He described Chakalaca as a "kind of salsa" and that was about it. I'll try to do a little better than that. The "salsa" element is a mixture of edamame, tomato, and onion. this is topped with a polenta-seared coconut rice cake and fried sweet potato strings. Matt really enjoyed this dish; the liquid at the bottom of the dish created a sort of stew. The onions were, to Matt's delight, quite mild, and the edamame was well cooked. He said that the coconut rice cake resembled coconut shrimp in flavour. All in all this unexpected dish was a hit.

4621744599_0766f25542.jpg

I considered for a split second getting the Filet with Mac & Cheese I'd read so much about, but somehow I couldn't imagine the flavours melding very well together. Instead, I went with the BBQ Shortribs served with a potato and mushroom pave (which was basically a gratin). The meat was incredibly moist and literally fell off the bone. The BBQ sauce was sweet and delicious. Taking bites of the meat a long with the potatoes and mushrooms reminded me of pot roast. This was homey, delicious, and a very large portion. I wished I could have managed to eat the whole thing! I highly recommend it.

Of course, what's a dinner at Disney without dessert? Matt chose the Kenyan Coffee Ice Cream with Donuts while I chose the White Chocolate Lemon Mousse.

4621749047_765f4ace93.jpg

This dessert was presented adorably with the ice cream in a demitasse cup topped with whipped cream and the donuts served on the side. The donuts were as to be expected; hot, covered in cinnamon sugar, and tasty. The ice cream tasted homemade and balanced out with the whipped cream. Matt pointed out, however, that coffee and donuts isn't really an African thing...really more Italian, don't you think?

4621747477_f8c4f481ba.jpg

My dessert was far lighter faire and just what I needed after such a filling meal. This managed to be both airy and decadent at once. It was served with what tasted like a sour cream ice cream and a raspberry puree that offered a hint of cardamon flavour. The little biscuits served with the dessert were super tasty, too. All in all this was a lovely little dessert.

Jiko gets five stars in my book, despite a really awkward and SLOW server. I will be back for sure in future visits. This was the only place to offer us a "congratulations" card for our Anniversary, which the servers all signed with various messages in lots of languages. If you're on the fence about Jiko, try it. I think you're gonna love it.

Next post I'll be reviewing Kona Cafe breakfast and Columbia Harbour House. Thanks for reading, see you next post!!

What an odd server! :headache:
I was considering ordering the savana rolls on my upcoming trip but they look pretty ordinary the salad looks yummy though!

Great review of Jiko :goodvibes
Shame about the server
I have heard so many good things about Jiko I think I am going to put it on my list as it sounds like it has some really interesting veggie options
Looking forward to hearing about Kona :thumbsup2

I am so glad you chose the short rib over the filet!!!!!!!!!:cool1::worship: My first meal there I had the short rib which was to.die.for! Last time I decided to try the much raved about filet and I was extremely disappointed. I honestly don't know what the hype is all about.:confused3

Hi
Great reviews!! I always like to hear about the veggie options since I don't eat any meat. Thanks!!

Subscribing! Great reviews! Took a glance at your food blog, very well done, and nice to have a source of SA food reviews :thumbsup2. Have you had a chance to try out the SA Earl of Sandwich locations?

Thanks! I'm going to update that with a review of Adelante in just a bit here. Yes, I have tried Earl Of Sandwich in SA! It's very yummy. A little pricey, but not too bad. I love sandwiches so I frequent this place whenever I can. A couple of vegetarian options, too. I'm excited that a California Pizza Kitchen has opened up at the Quarry, too! Can't wait to try that out.

I'm loving your reviews! Can't wait for more!

Thank you!

Hi
Great reviews!! I always like to hear about the veggie options since I don't eat any meat. Thanks!!

When I was picking places to eat I searched high and low for vegetarian reviews. There are a couple of good vegan reviews on the Dis, if you click back a couple of pages they're not hard to find. Those were helpful in picking places where Matt would have options.

Yeah, I love mac & cheese, but the idea of it below a juicy steak was a touch odd to me. The shortribs were sooo delicious. I would order them again in a heartbeat!

I think you should try it! The vegetarian main course is always changing but they actually have a vegetarian menu they will give you listing appetizers, entrees, and desserts that are vegetarian. Some of the appetizers on that list weren't on the main menu.

What an odd server! :headache:

They are pretty ordinary, honestly. Tasty but nothing to write home about. Since that was the only OOP cost to us (and the tip, of course) it wasn't a big waste or anything, but next time I would try something different.

Joining in, please. popcorn::

Awesome! Good to have you on board.

Kona Cafe

When I was making reservations I tried to spread out dinners, lunches, and breakfasts so we wouldn't get bored sitting down at the same time every day. The breakfast I chose was Kona Cafe; I'd eaten there last year and enjoyed it so decided to give it another go. Besides, my second choice, 1900 Park Fare, would have been our third character meal (wasn't sure how Matt would feel about those) and our second buffet, which Matt is not a fan of. So I went with Kona, and after some early morning rides at the Magic Kingdom, we headed over for our meal. To start things off we ordered the Lilikoi Juice and French Press Coffee.

4621753989_5588595198.jpg

When our server (who referred to Matt as my husband when he was in the bathroom!) brought the coffee over, Matt asked if it were done brewing. The guy looked at him like he had four eyes, but Matt knows about french presses and coffee. (He's worked at Starbucks for two years, owns an espresso machine, you know the drill.) The waiter assured us it was done brewing and we poured ourselves a cup. I have to say, this was the weakest coffee I have ever tasted. I don't think it was done brewing after all. I'd wanted Matt to enjoy some nice coffee since he'd been drinking Nescafe most of the trip, but unfortunately this was even weaker than that. Oh, well.
The Lilikoi juice was tasty and, just like last time, better on ice.

For our meals we chose Tonga Toast with home fries to substitute the breakfast meats, and Macadamia Nut Pineapple Pancakes, respectively.

4621752749_6bd05106b6.jpg

4622362670_421abe4a04.jpg

Matt decided to get the Tonga Toast that I'd told him about in the past because it was described as being made with sourdough. While the dish didn't have a sourdough flavour, he wasn't disappointed. This was a huge portion and he couldn't eat the whole thing. As you all know by now, Tonga Toast is a hunk of french toast filled with banana, covered in cinnamon sugar and served with maple syrup and strawberry sauce. The latter complimented the toast quite well and gave it a more balanced taste. The homefries Matt got were tasty too and a plentiful portion.

4622357316_688a8a5402.jpg

I requested the pineapple that covers the pancakes on the side along with butter. This was another large breakfast plate with three pancakes and three strips of bacon. I really enjoyed the pancakes, especially when I stole some of Matt's strawberry sauce to pour on top! The bacon on the other hand was super limp and had a strange smokiness about it that I didn't care for. In my experience, the only good bacon on property is from 1900 Park Fare. I should have requested home fries with mine too. Still, this was a solid breakfast. Both of us left very full and decided to go back to the room and rest for a while before once again braving the heat and crowds at Magic Kingdom.

Next up, Columbia Harbour House!

Loving the reviews so far. I'm vegan and I love reading veggie reviews.

Okay, Jiko looks delicious. I am definitely keeping the reservation I made for my November trip, whether we have to pay OOP or not (what was up with your server and that phrase, anyway  I guess he's never heard of it!)

Columbia Harbour House

After our big breakfast at Kona Cafe we decided to go back to the resort and rest for a bit before hitting up Magic Kingdom once the sun had gone down. I'd read a lot about Columbia Harbour House here on the Dis and I knew I wanted to try it for dinner, and thankfully I already knew to sit upstairs! Matt chose the Lighthouse Sandwich and I chose Fried Shrimp. It took a few minutes to get our food, and we headed up to a little table over looking the Haunted Mansion to dig in.

4692896194_d0fdd7a00d.jpg

The Lighthouse Sandwich is a vegetarian offering made up of toasted wheat bread, tomato, broccoli slaw, and hummus. I was a little worried that the broccoli slaw would have a strong mayonnaise flavour, as Matt hates mayo, but thankfully it didn't. This was served with kettle cooked chips and a soda. Matt really enjoyed this sandwich; I think it's a very refreshing vegetarian dish and something pleasantly unexpected.

4692261565_eb78365989.jpg

I adore seafood, especially fried shrimp, so this one was a no brainer for me. This was a large portion of shrimp and fries, along with a tiny little cup of coleslaw. I gave the latter a little taste, but I'm really picky about coleslaw and it wasn't my kind of thing. The shrimp, however, was delicious, and the fries were very tasty too.

4692897360_3d84f690ef.jpg

For dessert Matt chose the standard chocolate cake and I chose the cookie from the kid's menu so I could munch on it later. Both of these desserts were typical Disney fare. Enjoyable, sweet, but nothing to write home about.

This is my new go-to spot in the Magic Kingdom; the choices are varied and original, and it's easy to find a table away from the crowds. I highly recommend it!

Next up we have the princess lunch at Akershus! A hotly debated restaurant...how will it stack up?

Really excited about Jiko now!:yay:

It's amazing how a server can make or break a meal - I'm glad your server didn't put you off Jiko!

Columbia Harbor House - :lovestruc we love this place!

Can wait to hear more!:surfweb:

I'm enjoying both your photos and written reviews. Thanks for posting them.

You and Matt are an adorable couple too. :sunny:

Great reviews!!! I'm just jumping on board now, and you're off to a great start!! Love your pics, and your detailed accounts of each dish. WPE looks soooo good, we have to try that next trip since we'll have some CS to spare. Also I am so jealous of your Jiko meal!! We ended up switching it (for schedule purposes) and I'm still sad about it!!! Columbia Harbour House is my FAVORITE CS restaurant in Disney!!! LOVE IT!! So glad the fried shrimp were yummy and that your DBF I mean husband :rotfl: enjoyed his Lighthouse sammy:thumbsup2

OH! I forgot about the Pop cheesecake! I know it's not the greatest culinary masterpiece, but man, I love that cheesecake! I made DH drive me over to Pop on one of our trips where we had a rental car just to get a piece!!! Yes, I am a crazy person.

Can't wait to read more of your reviews!!!! :goodvibes:goodvibes

Thank you so much! You're gonna love Jiko; totally delicious, and enough options to please picky eaters.

Find a way to fit Jiko in next time; I don't think you're regret it. I love that Jiko's vibe is less...how can I put this lightly..."uppity" than some of the other Signatures. Dimly lit, comfortable, intimate. Great for romance, I'd say. CHH is now my favourite CS in MK for sure, though I do love WPE. Delish, delish, delish!!

Husband?! Woah woah girl! Getting ahead of ourselves there. :rotfl2:

Thank you so much for reading, I need the encouragement!! And don't worry dear, I love fellow crazies, haha.

Akershus

I was really on the fence about this meal. I had heard almost all negative things about Akershus, about how people didn't like the food, and how it was bizarre and not tasty. I decided to try it, however, because we needed another Epcot meal and I didn't want to try Chefs de France (and possibly be disappointed) for the third time, which was my original plan. So I threw the Dis to the wind! And I'm actually glad I did.

Akershus is an interesting meal in that there is a cold buffet that serves as your appetizer, and then you choose your entree. A dessert platter is served at the end. You get a nice photo package with Belle with this meal, too. It took a while for us to be served; our waitress had a huge group who were sending her all over the place with drink orders and requests. She was really sweet though, and I couldn't hold it against her. We gave our drink orders, chose our entrees, and were off to the appetizer bar. Yum!

4692267045_6d84f9b424.jpg

I chose a Coke for my drink and Matt chose a Pomegranate Lemonade. As you can see there's a fancy girly drink in this photo...and that belonged to Matt! It's the Prince Of Norway, a fruity beverage with very light Rum flavour. I stole a sip of this and it was totally delicious. Matt didn't even care that he looked like a girl. =P

4692266021_4ec3f66365.jpg

Matt's appetizer plate involved what appears to be a whole grain roll, various cheeses, and salad. As has been stated here many times before, he easily could have made a meal of just the appetizer bar. I was nervous about Akershus because their veggie dish was mushroom based, something Matt is very iffy on, but at least I knew that if he hated it he could fill up on salad and cheese.

4692264925_50b8332a7c.jpg

I was a little more adventurous in my selections; I tried pickled beets (turns out, not my thing!) and some cold salmon that was fresh, but too bland for my liking. I also grabbed a roll, some cheese, and asparagus to munch on. The goat cheese (the little brown slab under the cheese cubes) they have here is incredible. So sweet, so creamy, it melts in your mouth. I went back for more goat cheese, believe me.

4692903840_c1e05e3f54.jpg

This was a mushroom stuffed pasta served with in a Parmesan cream and mushroom sauce. Unfortunately, Matt didn't like this. He just really wasn't in the mood for mushrooms, took a few bites, and declared himself done. Let me say, however, that it tasted delicious to me. Very rich and creamy and, not surprisingly, mushroomy. If you like the 'shrooms, go for it. Totally yummy...just not for someone who's not so much in to the mushrooms.

4692269095_e89235991e.jpg

I chose the open faced chicken sandwich on sourdough. This was topped with tomatoes, arugula, Jarlsberg cheese, and lingonberry mayonnaise. Oh yeah, and bacon. This was served with a tiny portion of German potato salad and a cup of hearty vegetable soup. All of the components of the sandwich were flavourful and delicious...except the chicken!! Seriously, everything about this sandwich was yummy but the main star. It was just too thick and not well seasoned...but I still ate it, just to experience the cheese and mayo and bacon...super yummy, regardless. The soup it was served with was very bean heavy, a little on the spicy side, and incredibly hearty. I felt like a Norwegian lumberjack or something. Potato salad is not my thing, so that was meh to me. But all in all, a good meal.

The dessert platter came shortly after finishing our meal. We weren't sure what to expect since it seems every review I'd read involved a revolving door of desserts. We were pleased with what we ended up with.

4692270999_154de55a02.jpg

We were served chocolate mousse, rice pudding with strawberry sauce, and a puff pastry topped with strawberries and marscapone. Our waitress explained that the rice pudding would be a treat they might have during Christmas back home. My favourite of these was the rice pudding, but Matt really enjoyed the pastry. I thought it was a bit too savory for dessert but he enjoyed the balance of flavours. The chocolate mousse was nothing to write home about; chocolately, dense, chilled. But no better than what you get anywhere in the park.

So what did we think about Akershus? It was good. Not great, not bad, but good. The appetizer bar was the highlight, and the desserts were super yummy, but unfortunately our entrees fell a bit short. I would recommend you give it a try, though. All of the ridiculously negative reviews I've read on here are, in my opinion, overwrought. Screw the critics! Give it a try. You just might be surprised.

BONUS! EPCOT TREATS!

4692913728_fef13ff9de.jpg

Matt grabbed a Plum Oolong Tea Slushie. But this wasn't a normal slushie...it was an alcohol slushie!! When he ordered it the girl behind the counter mentioned in passing that it was "very sweet" and oh my, was she right. This thing was like make-your-teeth-hurt-make-your-tongue-dry sweet. But it was also delicious!

4692914444_0409af678e.jpg

Since Matt got a treat I wanted one too and grabbed a Kaki Gori from Japan. I got rainbow with cherry, melon, and tangerine. While there was some confusion from the woman who tried to charge the snack to my room after I specifically asked if I could use the DDP, this was a super yummy treat. I wish there had been a little more syrup, but the flavours were more unique and strong than your typical raspa.

That's it for this installment! Next up I'll have Crystal Palace.
