Light room 3?

I haven't played with LR3 yet, but in both of the previous versions, you choose the photos and then hit the export button in the Library tab.

You don't really save, you export with whatever edits you've applied in Lightroom. This helps with the whole non-destructive approach to editing.

It's basically the same in 3 as it was in previous versions. The window looks a little different, but it's the same concept.

This.

Or you can also go under File -> Export.

Either way it's Export, not the Save As that you find in many programs.

The edits aren't really made until you export them! The original files stay intact, and the changes are in an additional file called a "sidecar". So, you will always have three files for every saved edit; the original, the sidecar, and the final.

I like to convert my .nef (raw) files to Adobe's .dng on import. The DNG file is actually smaller and stores the original raw and the sidecar in one file making it easier to share raw files with your edits. I believe the DNG file is an open format.

You can read all about DNG on Adobe's site.

Key benefits for photographers:
•DNG format helps promote archival confidence, since digital-imaging software solutions will be able to open raw files more easily in the future.
•A single raw processing solution enables a more efficient workflow when handling raw files from multiple camera models and manufacturers.
•A publicly documented and readily available specification can be easily adopted by camera manufacturers and updated to accommodate technology changes.
