A cheap metal (not disposable) cookie sheet from dollar tree. That way they can play and not drop their toys, color and have a hard surface or play cards.
We, when my kid were much younger than they are now, wrapped individual toys like the small boxes of legos or action figures or barbie. A movie or game that they really, really wanted. The toys were numbered.
The kids did NOT know about the "toy bin".
When they had watched their movies, played their games and were starting to get restless, we pulled out the box. They dug through the box looking for the toy #ed 1. Then we would pull out the cookie sheets to use as a playing surface. Often times the toys built on each other. 1st toy barbie, 2nd toy clothes, 3rd toy another barbie ect... OR 1st toy Lego building, 2nd toy lego figures, 3rd toy lego car, lego swords, ect -- you get the picture.
They got a toy every hour OR every so many miles OR after we crossed a state line OR if they could find a licence plate from certain states OR a weird colored car. Sometimes they had to play the ABC game to get a new toy. OR, my favorite, when mom thought they were being "so good". We just mixed it up and had fun.
My kids, now teenagers, would rather drive than fly. Funny, how if you bond with your kids they like to spend time with you. They say getting on a plane is NOT a good way to get where you are going.
