In the situation where you are saving $1600 a year, that is pretty unique. Canadian resident discounts abound and it has rarely been worth it for us to even buy a gold pass. To have a family of 4 save money on an AP you would have to do two trips a year and not go during blackout dates. If you book Park hopper plus on the Canadian discount now, it varies slightly depending on time of year, but it's under $500 to go for 8 days. To stay for 8 days with 4 people I would imagine you are looking at a 1 bedroom most years meaning, if you are buying at Riviera you need 300 points a year. If you want to buy 100 at Riv and 200 somewhere else on resale that makes more sense, but still the point remains that unless you are doing two separate trips, it's cheaper to just buy tickets.
The only time I have bought an AP is when I am going twice in a 12 month span (I.e. I go in late September one year and early September or late August the following year).
