I'm at the younger end of the baby boom.

Never heard the term Generation Edge. I thought the latest born children are Gen Z. And I also think Millenial covers at least through 2000, including the current cohort of college students.

I would have guessed that there'd be a lot of GenXers here. We're the ones with kids of the right age to be going to Disney World, and we're old enough that we have some disposable money and jobs where we can play on the Dis at work occasionally.

ETA: Yes, I know millenials are old enough to have kids, and sure, some Boomers are here because of grandkids, but we're just talking general trends.

Well I'm a baby boomer with kids still in high school. Late start.

Hubby retires early when the youngest one graduates high school.

I am an earlier Gen X'er and my husband is a later Baby Boomer. I feel I have more in common with him than I do with the youngest Gen X'ers, interestingly enough.

Here are the "Influences" for each group:

Traditionalists:

  • The Great Depression
  • World War II
  • The New Deal
  • The GI Bill
  • The Cold War
  • Pearl Harbor
Baby Boomers:
  • Vietnam
  • Moon Landing
  • Protests
  • Woodstock
  • The Beatles
  • Oil Embargo
Generation X:
  • Personal computer
  • Divorce
  • AIDS
  • Cable Television
  • Latchkey kids
  • Challenger explosion
Millennials:
  • Terrorism
  • Technology
  • Mixed economy
  • Social media
  • Columbine
  • Climate change
Generation Edge:
  • The Great Recession
  • FaceTime
  • Youtube
  • ISIS
  • Marriage equality

I totally agree with you that there is overlap in the events, media, etc. that impact us. With these kind of things they have to make a judgement call about the cutoff point.

GenX, a teen in the 80s. God, the 80s sucked.

What??? I had hair in the 80's. A beautiful, thick head of long hair in the 80's...even somewhat mullet styled. I had a boom box. I hung out in arcades, dude. I watched MTV. I had a Rubix Cube and a Swatch. I watched Dukes of Hazzard and the Cosby Show. How could the 80's have sucked? Traitor... :P :D

I find myself much closer aligned with Gen X values as being the oldest of the possible millenials. I've got far more in common with someone born in 70 than in 90.
For some reason, I thought you were born before 1980. Maybe I read another thread wrong at some point.

In 80. I'm 37.

ETA: I graduated from high school, college (got my undergrad at 19), and MBA (21) early. There are literally people I graduated high school with that forget I'm a hair younger.

I see the millenials section is gaining speed. Perhaps if we got some folks from the Adult/Solo Travelers board to take a look at this thread... :scratchin It feels like more people there are around my age than on other boards.

Haha, we should get @brad813 on recruitment duty, I feel like he's been king of the threads there lately. :)

I found this to be super insightful. Knowing that GenX runs the DISboards, these are some interesting tips- even if they are meant to apply to the workplace.

I am so in the right category! The Gen X description is me all the way.

You know, I didn't really appreciate the 80's when I was living in them, but the nostalgia is fabulous!

Gen x here! Although on the later end in 1976. Kind of on the cusp of Gen Y, which is not an option here. I thought Gen Y was the 1980'ish crowd?

The only problem is if you were late BB, you don't identify with most of these things. Late Boomers I think would be more influenced by 70's than 60's

I think other sources sometimes call Millennials Generation Y. I am using a company that presents/focuses on this stuff so there isn't argument and conflict over the boundaries. There are a lot of different definitions of the groups, and even more terms out there.
