Let's Do It Again - January Trip Report

While we are in Animal Kingdom, we decided to go to Flame Tree BBQ. Previously, this was our favorite CS in Animal Kingdom. We hadn't been there in awhile, so we decided to go. Two unfortunate things happened. First, all of my photos were deleted. No food porn. So I ask if anyone has some old photos please post them. Second, I was disappointed by the food. Here is what happened.

We waited in a long line, even though the park was about empty. When we got to the front, our debit card wouldn't work, as we had not told our bank we were going on vacation and a security block came up. That was OK as we had some cash.

Next, we ordered onion rings and a chicken/rib combo to share. The Good- The onion rings are FANTASTIC!!:thumbsup2 I totally love these onion rings. Big, crispy and filled with thick onion slices. No disappointment there. The chicken/rib combo was another story. The ribs were dry, and smaller than I previously remembered. The chicken was also dry and some of the smallest pieces of chicken I have ever paid that high a price for. Smothering it in the awesome BBQ sauce makes it all better, though. I still liked it, it all tasted good, but it just wasn't as good as I remembered. except for the onion rings. Those are always great.

Hey guys! With another try, I was able to find my old photos. Here is DH with the combo.

Here are the fabulous onion rings

That night, we went to Boma. We had skipped this one for awhile because DH has become so frustrated with the buffet costs. Basically, he believes that the quality of the all you can eat places has gone down since the rise of the DDP. The prices, however, have continued to increase. I had been bugging and bugging him to go back. He finally agreed.

Here is a copy of the only plate I could remember. It is half eaten, so I apologize in advance.

I started out with a seafood gumbo. It was nice, but a little bland. No real spice like you would expect from gumbo. I was disappointed because they didn't have the coconut curry seafood stew, my all time favorite soup. I have to learn to make it at home. Next, I had a curry pasta salad that was a bit too sweet. I had some type of green salad that I remember liking, and a garbanzo bean salad that had a nice vinegar sauce. The star of the plate was couscous. Love this stuff. I also got another soup, mulligatawny stew. Again, pretty bland.

My other plate was filled with meat. Excellent carved roast beef. Not as good as the prime rib previously served here, but still nice. I had mine medium, but they had well done and rare pieces as well. That is really great everyone can get the meat they like. I also had pistachio crusted salmon. Yum. There was chicken that was a little bland as well.

I finished off with a zebra dome. Love these things. They taste like coffee, but I don't get an allergic reaction like I do with coffee. The bread pudding with vanilla sauce was great, too. I had a lemon tart that was ok. I also got a chocolate chip cookie. Typically, I love these, but this one was not so good. It was flavorless and a bit hard.

I almost forgot the Jungle Juice. This was great. I was given a humongous glass that I couldn't even finish. Juice is really sweet and thick. I can handle a small glass only. If everyone gets one this big, I suspect a lot is wasted. And I hate wasting good stuff. I wished I could have taken it back to the villa and added a bit of rum. Anyone know if there is a drink out there that uses Jungle Juice as its base?

All in all, the food was OK but not worth the price. Where the Boma food used to be spicy, not toned down at all, with tons of unusual and exotic tastes; our meal that night was homogenized by comparison. The food was ok but nothing extraordinarily special.

Our bill was almost $90 with tip. For a buffet, where I serve myself, and the food was mediocre, it just wasn't worth it. And Boma doesn't give any discounts, presumably because it is so popular. DH drove his point home. We spent only about $20 more for Il Mulino, with an orlandoconventionaid.com coupon, and that included a glass of wine each.

I may try breakfast again, as it has always been my favorite breakfast. Unless I hear Boma is going back to the unique eats it once had, or the price goes down (I have a sense of humor don't I) we won't be back any time soon.

I agree that the onion rings at FT are quite tasty! For us the buffets at WDW are quite a lot as my DH and I can't eat that much and would rather go to a signature.

Thanks for your reviews! Boma used to be one of our favorites, until we got sick of it after a long stay at AKL in 2006. I'm sorry to hear it's not what it used to be.

Just chiming in as I dont want to be one of THOSE people! :rotfl2: Great job, you have eaten at places I have not been to, it is interesting to read about places that are new. Thanks for posting all the pics, they are yummy.

Hi all. Thanks for the kind words. Didn't mean to "diss" lurkers. I am often one myself. But thanks for the encouragement. It means a bunch.

I know this isn't a Disney pic, but since DH and I downed this bottle in our SSR villa, I figured I would include it. This is Paraiso Pinot Noir. This is the best Pinot Noir in the $20 price point. Even better than many higher price points I have found. I am not certain if any WDW restaurant has it, but if you ever get a chance to get some, JUST DO IT!!!! This is excellent wine. Fruity and deep flavor, but light at the same time. Just lovely.

The next day was Epcot. We did a few rides and entered World Showcase right at opening. We knew exactly where we wanted to go. Tangerine Cafe, our favorite Epcot CS. The food here is well worth the higher price. The portions are big enough to share, and trust me DH and I can put away the food. We shared the Chicken and Lamb Shawarma Platter - served with side of Hummus, Tabouleh and a Tangierine Couscous Salad with fresh Moroccan bread. We love this. The couscous salad is excellent. The meat is well spiced and flavorful. The bread is soft and fresh. Well worth the $15 price tag.

Next we went wine tasting in France. This is one of our favorite activities in the World.

We met some friends to bum around Epcot that afternoon. We were texting back and forth so much coordinating, so I ran out of battery. I can only describe the remainder of the day.

I really like the multi-colored margarita outside the Mexico Pavilion. Had a couple of those. Dh had a wine tasting in Germany. He tried the red tasting, even though Germany is known for its whites. He was not impressed. I was sipping my margaritas, so I didn't really taste them.

That night we went to Bluezoo. I should have known good things were in store for us. I should have known this would supplant Il Mulino as my all time FAVORITE restaurant. I NEVER EVER EVER get to take photos at my favorite restaurant. I didn't get any photos here, but I sure wish I had. This was ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS!!!! The food was BEAUTIFUL!!!! I am so bummed. I will try to explain what we had in as much detail as possible.

First things First. This is the First place ever that acknowledged our anniversary. We have been in the World for our anniversary three times, my birthday and DH birthday. Never did anyone give us any special treatment, until this night. Immediately after sitting down, we were each given a wonderful glass of champagne. I looked on the menu and saw it was a $15 glass, each. There was a perfect ripe raspberry at the bottom of the glass. The manager came over and congratulated us and talked awhile. That is when I discovered that the Food & Wine classic is set for October 31 and November 1 this year. Yay!! This was so good and so sweet, I was a bit overwhelmed.

We got an amuse bouche, but unfortunately I don't recall what it was exactly. I thought it had a tiny little bite of tuna. I was so dazzled by our champagne I didn't make a note.

We started out with Yellowfin Tuna Tartare - Miso caviar, cucumber, scallion cream, nitro siracha aioli $18.00. I had the same dish at the Food & Wine Classic last October, and knew that I had to have more than the taste I had back then. Superfresh Tuna, asian slaw and freeze dried siracha. Think dippin dots, only made of hot sauce. FANTASTIC!!

For our main dishes, DH had Simply Fish - the daily selection of finest fresh fish selected from coastal waters around the world, simply grilled on our teppanyaki grill, served with warm crabmeat, dijon mustard, chives sauce. That day I think it was grouper or sea bass. I honestly don't remember. What I do remember is that it was wonderful. The crab sauce was velvety. I could barely keep my fork off his plate.

Not to say mine wasn't one of the best fishies ever. I swear I stabbed DH's hand several times as he tried to sneak another bite. I had Dirty South Swordfish - barbecue rubbed, house smoked tasso risotto, rock shrimp, littleneck clams. OH MY GOD!!! This was FABULOUS!!!! On the bottom was risotto. The smokey, spicy, super-sweet bacon-y taste of the tasso was to die for. On top of that was a large tasty piece of swordfish. I know the description says BBQ, but it was so much more than that. It was a dry run BBQ that had essence of cayenne pepper. Top that with a spicy sauce that included rock shrimp and succulent clams, and you had perfection. I just wanted to lick the plate to get the little sauce that was left.

DH said he needed to take a ciggie break by this time, so he left the dessert choice to me. I asked for the menu, and looked at it a bit. While I was scoping it out, our wonderful waiter kept me company. We talked about wine, as DH and I had drunk a couple of nice glasses after our wonderful champagne. We also talked about chocolate, my love of dessert, and how I always wanted to be a pastry chef. When DH came back, the server gave us a minute to discuss dessert. I was about to order the Banoffee Tarte, but I didn't have a chance. Out he came with the BEST DESSERT EVER!! There was a chocolate pavlova. Beneath the fluffy, yet crunchy, meringue was a rich dark chocolate gelato. Next to that was a piece of chocolate that had Happy Anniversary on it written in gold. There were two truffles. It seems like there was something else chocolate, but I can't remember. By this point I was a bit drunk, both on the vino and the wonderful special experience we were having. Oh how I hate that my camera always poops out on me when I am at my favorite restaurants. I just can't describe how much I loved this dessert.

The service was excellent. Every person who served us, including the guys taking our plates, said Happy Anniversary. The manager took time to come talk to us. Our server, was the best ever. The meal was perfectly timed. He was very familiar with all of the dishes and wines. He was kind enough to stop by to chat while Mike was taking a short break. During that conversation he discovered my tastes and came out with the perfect dessert for me. I only wish I could remember his name. He was a handsome, olive skinned man. For some reason I think he said his mother was from Morocco or Tunisia or the like. I really wish I could be more like Brenda and get a great server's name. I just wish I could thank him again for the wonderful evening.

This is now my favorite restaurant. The focus is seafood, my favorite. The extras for our anniversary were really special. The food was superior to any seafood restaurant we have been to. The service was wonderful I LOVE LOVE LOVE this place. It is now a MUST DO.

Sounds like a fabulous experience at Bluezoo. That chocolate pavlova sounds absolutely wonderful.

I agree that BlueZoo is wonderful! So relaxing on top of having delicious food and top-notch service.

Getting caught up on DRs tonight. Still enjoying reading about all the tasty food you (and drink!) you enjoyed on your trip. :beach:

We started the day off at Earl of Sandwich. I can't find my new photos, so here are the ones from my prior trip. We had the ham & egg sandwich and the bacon & egg sandwich. These were OK. They do the job. We keep going there to order these, but I don't think it is a must do. It just seems to end up that way.

After a nice time at Epcot, and another wine tasting in France:

we took the Monorail to go to the Gardenview Tea Room at the Grand Floridian Hotel. On our October trip, my bestie Sally insisted we do tea. I thought it was a great idea, but DH was a bit hesitant. Being a trooper, and not wanting to be left out of anything :lmao: DH decided to go with us. He had such a good time that afternoon tea is a must do for all of our trips.

So, on to tea.

I had Russian Earl Grey. Classic. DH had Eros, I believe. Eros - Medium bodied Ceylon: Sweet Mandarin orange with warm vanilla for a sweet, smooth and creamy finish. I remember it had a nice fruity flavor. We each added a cube of sugar. We never use sugar in our tea at home, but there is just something about putting a little cube in your tea and watching it dissolve that is so much fun. DH says it reminds him of his Dad, who used to put sugar cubes in his coffee.

I truly believe DH just comes here for the Prince Edward Tea.

These are all of the foods he never has at home. Prince Edward's Tea - A delicious array of duck and cherry terrine, chicken and pork roulade, country pate en croute, and , and English Blue Stilton, the "King" of English cheeses. Served with marinated fresh berries, and Cumberland sauce. We then offer our delicious fresh-baked scones served with rich Devonshire cream. Your choice of our tea with a glass of our Fonseca Bin 27 Character Port. His plate also included an Irish cheddar, but I don't see it listed. That is the only thing I would enjoy on this plate. For DH, it is pure heaven.

I got Buckingham Palace - Our traditional tea sandwiches, scones and jam tarts complemented by fresh strawberries and cream, or a selection of freshly baked pastries, along with your choice of tea.

The tea sandwiches were good. There was a salmon, egg salad, pear and gargonzola, cucumber and curry chicken. The pear was my favorite, followed by the chicken curry. I really liked the sweet onion tart hiding in the background. While I enjoyed these, I really wish I had the option of getting a cheese plate instead. The cheese on DH plate was so good, I think I would enjoy the tea food more.

Next came the course of scones and jam tart. This is FABULOUS!!

Sorry, I couldn't help myself. I took a bite of that wonderful scone. Forget about DH. No way his plate was any better for a photo. We love love love this course. The strawberry jam is sweet and tastes of fresh strawberries. The Devonshire cream is light and sweet. The lemon curd is my favorite! I could eat this stuff alone, without the scone. The jam tart is also wonderful. Very sweet though. DH enjoyed it so much, he stole part of mine. While I was shovelling the lemon curd into my mouth, he carried it away. It was gone before I could even swallow. That is OK. I had another course coming. Besides, I kept stealing his port. Yummy liquor goodness.

My final course was dessert. I ordered the trifle of the day, banana. It was a very nice finish to my tea. I might have it wrong, looking at the photo, but I think this is how it was layered. It had a layer of vanilla pudding. Next a cake-like cooking thingy crumbled on top. The next layer was bananas, kind of like bananas foster. Finally, there was cream, and the GF in I think cinnamon on top. This is beautiful, and tastes good.

Over all, we love tea here. It truly is a must do. I am so happy that the October ladies want to set up a Dis meet at tea. That way we have an excuse to go if our nephew doesn't want to.

Earl of Sandwich is a must do for us but I've never tried the breakfast sandwiches there. They look a little smaller than the regular sandwich - similar to the kids size :confused3

Even though I don't drink tea, afternoon tea is such a traditionally British thing, it would be wrong if I didn't go in October with the DIS ladies. I see on the menu that they serve mimosas and the like so I'm pretty sure I'll be good ;)

My DS would absolutely LOVE that banana trifle. He adores trifle, with his favourite being chocolate and traditional a close second. Personally, I don't like it but I never can think of trifle without thinking of the episode of Friends where Rachel makes a trifle :rotfl:

What a nice review of afternoon tea! I wish my DH would try it with me!!

It was very relaxing, yet exciting at the same time. The dark interior, with the blue hues, was very relaxing. The decor really reminds me of being under the water with waves all around.

The sandwiches were much smaller, but the bun was bigger than kid size. It didn't have enough meat for the bun. Again, this was not bad. Just not special like the regular sandwiches.

I never had trifle until I had the pear one last October. Trifle is not something I really ever considered making; and I have never seen it on a menu anywhere I have eaten in Chicago or the suburbs. These were both great. I now want to make trifle at home.

What a nice review of afternoon tea! I wish my DH would try it with me!!

The promise of pate was enough to get Mike to join us. If that is not your DH's thing, I am afraid I am out of suggestions. You are more than welcome to join us if we are ever there at the same time. This is a Must Do from now on.

I seem to have lost some of my photos. Particularly Shutters at the Caribbean Beach Resort. The entrees there had some really good qualities and some really poor qualities all in the same dish that can best be described by pointing things out in photos.

Does anyone know where I can find some photos to "borrow" for my report? I don't know how to get the URL from others' photos, if that is even possible. I am willing to give credit to the photo where credit is due. I would just really like to explain with a couple of photos.

Try the live dining reports threads as Barb has sorted those into restaurant order, with links. To get the url from another picture, you just right-click on the pic and select properties. You should then be able to copy the source url. I would just send the person a PM first, before 'borrowing' their pic, just to check they don't mind :thumbsup2

Oh my gosh, even without your pictures, you have me salivating! We've never eaten at Blue Zoo, but I'm pretty sure we're now going to have to go there on our September trip! You certainly have a way of describing food! My stomach is growling. :rotfl: Of course, it is lunchtime. Who the heck wants tuna salad after reading your report though! :lmao:

Enjoying your report so far! Just found it today.

To take the URL from a picture, you can also right lick and select "copy image location" and it automatically copies the picture's URL. Then you need only hit ctrl+v to paste the link in the picture thing.
