Now that hurricane season is once again looming, what is it with people?

A poster on the other hurricane thread mentioned how terrible the looting was in her town in Mississippi. I remember watching all those pictures of post-Katrina NOLA (and I am sure it happened elsewhere as well, just not as televised as NOLA was), and all the folks walking out of stores carrying TVs over their shoulders. Now I ask you, why would you think of running to your local appliance store and grabbing a TV when a category 5 hurricane has just blown threw your town, you have no home, and thereffore no electricity, and are going to be living God knows where for the next God knows how long?

And how about the behavior we heard of in the Superdome...I can understand fighting...people are stressed, frustrated, feel helpless...but raping, killing, child molestation???

Why???

I thought that this was proven untrue--That it never happened (ie-all of the Superdome murders, rapes, molestations)? Maybe it is just wishful thinking on my part :guilty:

As for the stealing of televisions and other non-edible items, I have a feeling that the people that did that were not nice people before the hurricane :confused3

I don't know what I would do if my family was starving and had no food. I have never been in that position. If I did steal food from a business, I would hope that when I got back on my feet again, I would pay my debt back to the shopkeeper.

You know, I have no problem with the stealing of food or other supplies(ie-medical supplies, some kind of clothing) needed to survive in a post-disaster situation. To me, that's different...that's survival. A TV in a post-disaster situation is not survival, it's theft.

I have never understood looting. I have witnessed it alot due to hurricanes. If I was in a position of not having food and essentials and I had to result to stealing to feed my children I would but it all goes back to getting prepared before a hurricane makes landfall. I remeber a few agencies were set up to help with items needed before a hurricane hits.

I think it is a state of the mind where one feels hopeless and this might be a way to strike back or feel like the items are owed to them. Thrill seekers and boredom do not mix and when a large number of people begin looting your chances of getting caught are slim. Alot of the electronics end up in pawn shops eventually.

Your right Disney Doll it is theft. It does not matter how a person twists and turns their situation, looting is stealing.
