It's only three days. I would not even think about a lesson plan. Just go have fun with your family. We are taking our kids out for 5 days mid-December and I can't wait!
Exactly what I was going to say. Three days isn't much at all, IMO. (1st grade teacher). And it's easy to say now, but once you get down there....you won't have time to think about school. Just go have fun!
(And I'm pulling my own DD14 & DS10 out before Thanksgiving. Myself too!)
If the teacher chooses to give them any work, be sure they complete it. Otherwise, it's only 3 days so I wouldn't worry about thinking of anything else to have them do.
I'm a kindergarten teacher, but it might be fun to give them the lesson plan to create and abc book with either your digital camera or a disposable one.
Here's a site that has a disney vacation theme for scrapbooking with an ABC list for kids - it's www.dennydavis.net. I can't link the exact site since it's blocked at work.
If that doesn't work for you, just have fun. Just think of all they things they'll learn that they can't learn in a classroom.
I'm taking my 4th and 2nd graders out of school for three days as well. Our school isn't thrilled when people do this and will not give any work ahead of time, but that's fine with us. We take them out for a few days every year and they just make up their missed work when they get back. I'd say just go, have fun, and enjoy some wonderful family time together. Family vacations are important too. We have so many wonderful memories of family vacations already, and I'm looking forward to many, many more. Have a great time!
Thanks for the suggestions. The teachers don't seem to be the problem. Both are straight A students and in the gifted programs. It is the the principal that is giving me such a hard time. The school system has taken a hard line that kids can only miss 10 days each year (this includes sick days) or they must repeat the grade! It does not matter what their test scores or grades are for that school year. You can appeal the decision at the Superintendent level but I only want to do that if there is no other option. It is in response to parents taking their kids home to their "home countries" to visit family for extended stays. They don't want to seem to discriminate so the school board drew a line in the sand several years ago. We will be in WDW for a week (2 of our days are Fall Break). I'm sure I won't be the only Mom taking their kids out of school in VA.
After reading my response I did not want anyone to get the wrong idea that I was insulting any particular group of individuals. My husbands family is from Europe. I know the value of visiting the country where you came from and keeping up with family ties. When we visit cousins overseas we go during the summer months so we can spend time and immerse the kids into a different culture. At least for our school district too many families were taking the kids out for 3-4 weeks at one time. The Board made a decision that limits the kids to just 10 days. Unfortunately that decision keeps parents from traveling even a few days in the school year and they send their kids to school sick because they don't want to bump up to that 10 day rule. Sorry if I offended anyone in my previous post, it was not my intention. I was just frustrated with our school board's rules.
and rightly so. seems like they could accept a doctor's note for illness and not count that in the 10 days. ds got strep in kindergarten and missed an entire week - i'm sure no one would want a child with a contagious illness in their child's classroom all day, but that is what the school board is forcing on people.
stepping off the soapbox now
and in response to your question - their teachers aren't going to let them fall behind from missing three days. enjoy your vacation!!!
