Lens hoods: Petal or Round?

The title asks the question. What is your preference, and why?

I took my camera out with me over the weekend and lost the one that came with the lens I was using, which was a flower/petal style hood. I'm obviously going to need to replace this sooner rather than later, but on searching a few online stores, I'm presented with a choice and wondered if you are persuaded one way or another, and if so, what the reasons are.

Depends on the lens. I like petal style ones for short focal and wide angle lenses, but prefer the round/tube style for longer focal lengths. For longer focals, the tube-style seem to do a better job with all flare, and since the lens is already long, the extra length doesn't bother me. On a wider focal lens, the petals allow it to be smaller/lighter, and seem to be as effective, so I prefer those.

I think the mfg selects the one most suited for the lens. Like batteries, I tend to go with what was on there. What lens was it?

I take that back. I have a collapsable lens hood on my 70-200 because it is sooo long.

It's the one on my 18-105 Nikkor lens so not terribly long. And it was a petal hood, so should I just go get exactly the same one that came with it? So irritated I managed to lose it. to begin with!

Yeah -- at the wider end, a non-petal-type hood will vignette. The petal hoods are designed to offer less coverage in the corners of the frame where such vignetting would otherwise be visible.

I didn't know that. Thank you. I guess if it ain't broke, don't fix it! I will just order a replacement one identical to the one that came in the box.

OP - Thanks for asking the question. And thank you to everyone for the responses. I lost a hood and I had the same question - but didn't think to ask it.

It looks like I will be getting a new petal hood because (1) it is a wide angle lens and (2) it looks cool!!

Petal hoods cannot be used on a lens where the front element rotates while focusing.

I've found that I can get away with a round hood with some lenses on my crop camera where I wouldn't be able to with a full frame or 35mm. Like my 28-105.
