Happy New Year Everyone!

I've got a Canon Powershot S5IS and was wondering what the next step lens would be. I'd like more zoom than what I have now, but I don't need extreme.

Thanks for any suggestions!

I'm sure someone will chime in and correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe you can change the lens on the Canon S5IS.

Typically, SLR type cameras have interchangeable lenses, but bridge cameras do not.

The S5's lens has a zoom equivalent to 36-432mm. To put this into perspective, if you were to buy an SLR and a telephoto lens that would give you that much reach, you would probably have to pay well into the upper hundreds and possibly thousands for the lens alone.

You will probably not find many cameras with more zoom than the S5, but if you can, you are probably better off just buying a new camera instead of spending your money on converters.

Ooooh, o.k., I see. I didn't have any idea the lenses weren't interchangeable! Told ya I was a newbie! ;) Thank you so much for your time and reply!

Your S5 is probably 2-3 years old, correct? Point and shoots eventually die. My point is that the Canon teleconverter works fairly well for your camera, but others don't particularly (from my experience and from what I've read). I have a non-Canon 2x teleconverter for my S5 and it doesn't add much to the zoom with any clarity.

If you really need more zooming capability, I'd suggest going to the newer ultra-zoom p and s cameras that have up to 24x zoom (Nikon makes one). I wouldn't spend and extra $100 or so to get the teleconverter for your camera since it is older and may go out at any time. Save a little extra and just get a newer, better zooming camera.
