I have a Nikon N60 film SLR that I've had since 1999/2000. I currently have a 18-200 lens on it. DH is thinking of using our Christmas money (& as my upcoming January birthday present combo) to get me a Nikon D90 digital SLR that I've been wanting. I haven't been able to determine anything specific from the Nikon website.....so any of you that have the D90, will the lens that I currently have work? The N60 is an autofocus camera. If the lens will work on the new D90, this would greatly help cost-wise since we would then just have to purchase the camera body. Thanks for your help!

They should work with each other. Take the lense with you to your camera store and try it. They should let you do that. :)

Any lens you have that currently works on your D60 will function on your D90.

You shouldl have no trouble with lenses that were used on an N60. I used an N70 for many years and all the lenses I used on that body worked on my D50 when I went digital.

However, I don't think that the 18-200mm from an N60 is correct. I don't believe Nikon made a "kit" lens that went that wide for film especially on a big focal lenght like that. Are you sure its not 28-200. Either way its fine, however, 28mm on a dSLR body like the D90 is not very wide. The sensor is smaller and therefor the field of view is 1.5x great than on film, so a 28mm focal length on digital has a field of view of what a 42mm lens has on film. Just an FYI.

You are correct....it was a typo....it's a 28-200.

Thanks for all the info! This will be my first digital camera (waited to go digital until finances were right & camera were right for a 12megapixel or better). As for taking the lens to the store....the only stores in town that carry the D90 right now cost about $300 more than amazon.com....so that's why I was asking for input for people "in the know" that have experience moving from film to digital. Thanks for the help! :goodvibes

Just remember that with the 1.5x crop factor of the D90, your 28 - 200mm lens will turn into a 42 - 300mm equivalent. You lose the wide angle on the low end but gain on the telephoto end. This is because the digital sensor in the D90 is smaller than a 35mm frame, so it only uses a portion of the lens's image circle and enlarges it to achieve the same size as a 35mm frame, in effect increasing the focal length of a full-frame lens by 1.5X.
