Well you can never be too carefull when handeling your lenses- as my 10.5mm Fisheye will attest to after it's encounter with concrete this weekend. Just in a hurry for no reason and it slipped out of my hand. :headache:

Multiple cracks are visible at different depths when looking into the front element.

Surprisingly it still seems to work just fine. The Auto Focus still works and I cant see anything wrong with the few images I snapped with it. I wonder if the cracks will get worse or lenses will seperate eventually.

Wow, thats not good. I'm not sure if the cracks will spread or not, but for now that pic looks fine to me that you took. Is your lens insured?

Yikes! :scared1: That is scary! I can't believe you can't see anything in the photos you took.

I might possibly be wrong here, but I would venture a guess that she didn't use the lense she dropped to take a picture of the lense she dropped.:confused3 :)

He -- just for the record. And what would be the point of using a different lense?

Thank you- yes- He (me) took the pictures of the damaged lens with a different lens- but the picture I linked to in the original post was taken with the broken one. I will give it a better test today in the sun and see if the cracks are visible in the images under different conditions. Nothing is chipped away from the front element- everything is in internal layers of glass so I guess if it does not show up in pictures there should not be much to worry about.

Wow does that suck! I am amazed of the clarity of the shot you took with it after the fact!

Here's hoping for the best!

as good as gdad is, i don't think even he could take that lens's photo with the same lens ...unless he used a mirror:lmao:
i really think they need to replace all concrete with that squishy stuff they put under playgrounds..think of the lenses it might save, and it's more fun to walk on
sorry about the lens though Gdad...and here i was upset cause i lost a lens cap;)

On the image you took after the fact, what aperture was used? That might make a difference, as the damage appears to be toward the outer edge. Might it not be more apparent if you're shooting wide open? Or maybe the one you shot was wide open ...

I suspect you will see some issue when you shoot into the sun... If you don't see anything wrong in those images, I'll have to start buying broken lenses on Ebay...

where's the after the fact photo? can't seem to find anything but the 2 lens photos( duh for me)

That totally sucks Jeff. The experience I had when my camera dropped onto the ceramic tile floor of the POR lobby was that initially everything was fine. In fact I used the lens for 4 days. I did notice that it looked a little loose on the front lens element, but everything worked.

Then on day 5 it just fell apart. I took it out of my pouch to switched out with the lens I had on the camera and when I took the cap off, the front element came off with it.

I hope this doesn't happen to you. I"ll keep my fingers crossed. My repair bill was $116.

(I'm a little late here, but what the heck.)

A moment of silence for the damaged fisheye - it's always tough when you see the one you love get hurt. :teeth:

The fact that it seems to continue to work well goes along with the old adage, "lenses are for looking through, not at."
