I tried to book 6 nights and got the message that the length of stay was greater than days allowed....what does that mean? I've booked longer before.

Absent something wrong with the system that should occur only in 2 situations: (a) you are trying to book exactly 11 months (at home resort) or 7 months (at a non-home resort) from date of arrival, at which time you are allowed to book up to 7 nights, and you actually tried to do it one day more than 11 or 7 months out, or before 8 a.m. eastern at 11 or 7 months out; (b) you are trying to book a stay that straddles your use year with only 6 of those nights being left in one use year -- for example, assume you have a June use year and you are trying to book May 26 to June 2. The system won't let you make that as one reservation because your existing use year ends during the time you want. It is just a system quirk and not an actual prohibition and you can either call to make the reservation or make two separate reservations on-line and then have MS link them. If either of those is not your situation then likely there is a system error.

Is this the time the online reservation system refreshes, vs. midnight?
(Many thanks!)

For the 11 or 7 month window, the new "day" starts at 8:00am eastern. So tomorrow at 8:00am, you could book 11/7/14 at your home resort.
