My daughter wants to be Lela from Teen Beach Movie. I guess it is in short supply now, and not in stores, online only.

Instead of getting the costume a month ago like I should have, I waited and now it is nowhere to be found except on Ebay - being auctioned off at $150! Some of the Buy it Now listings are cutting it too close to the day of Halloween.

For a cheaply made, retail $30 costume, no thanks! We are putting our own version together.

Anyone in a similar boat with a costume this year?

After reading this, I decided to google for the heck of it (plus, I had no idea who that person was). I laughed at the Party City site "This item is not available at this time. Available the week of February 14, 2014". So, you could get one for Valentines Day! :rotfl:

Yep. DS9 wants to be Dr. Who. (the 11th doctor- yes, you have to specify!! lol)
No stateside costumes for sale. I did find them on ebay internationally. for sale for around $50, plus $30 for shipping. Instead I bought him a sonic screwdriver, still looking for the bow tie and suspenders. A much more budget friendly alternative!

Who are these people paying over $100 for their children's costumes??

Wow, I guess I got lucky-- I searched on Etsy a few weeks ago and found a couple listings for handmade versions of the red and white polka dot Lela dress. Ordered one for my daughter- $42 shipped. It's gorgeously done. Was going to link you to the Etsy shop, but I just looked and she can't get the fabric in time to do any more. The other person who had been listing the dress no longer has it listed either.

Ugh! I was really worried about the Leonardo Deluxe Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle costume in a size SMALL. The size small was so difficult to find. I got lucky on Friday and scored one.

I planned ahead but I bought a Medium and it was way to big. By the time I got around to exchange it, it was too late.

I just did a search on ebay for a "red and white polka dot sun dress" and found a BUNCH of cute dresses (for adults - how old is your daughter?) for around $40 that could easily be adapted to Lela's dress (as per my google search, at least) by the addition of the white piece at the top.

Check this one out: http://www.ebay.com/itm/50s-Inspired-RED-with-White-POLKA-DOTS-Pinup-Betty-HALTER-TOP-Sun-Dress-/141028178150

Just thinking out loud, but a detachable white peter pan collar might work for that white piece at the top of the dress. . .

If she's a little girl, looks like there are a bunch for that size as well. . .

Okay, just googled all Lela's looks. (I love costumy stuff. . .)

Lela also has a v. cute look the first time she's apparently in the movie that would be easier to put together than the pink ensemble the costume stores are selling. (Not sure how hard it is to find light pink leather jackets, but I'm guessing they're not that common!)

Black leather biker jacket, black halter top, high-waisted red and white striped shorts. I did just a quick search and don't see any photos of what shoes she's wearing, but your daughter would know. You'd probably need to get the shorts made, but the rest could possibly be found at the thrifts or on ebay.

ETA: Oh, and don't forget a cheap studded black belt and a red and white scarf! Accessories make the costume.

ETA2: Found a picture with the shoes. Red patent pumps. Easy and cheap to find, generally. Depending on the age of your daughter, you could substitute red patent flats pretty easily. Also, fingerless black leather gloves - should be at the costume stores right about now, for punk rockers and similar costumes.

Thank you for the thought, though! My girl wants to be the Lela with the pink jacket and pink shorts. I found some separate pieces, a wig, the pink boots so I hope once I put it all together she likes it! The only thing that is iffy is the jacket -- it's pink and the right shape but isn't vinyl or leather, it's denim but it was the best I could find for $20! She can wear it again.

Thanks for looking into this for me! Here is what I've come up with, tell me what you think:

- Pink denim jacket (I know, not leather but what the hey)

- pink denim shorts from justice (on clearance)

- studded belt

- Pink top, for under denim jacket (this one is up in the air, still looking)

- Pink go go boots
- Long black wig

Don't feel bad about waiting. We ordered early and still have problems. DD wanted to be a minion. Couldn't find one anywhere except one on-line store. It's been 2 weeks and hasn't shipped yet. We're stating to get nervous so I'll be calling first thing Monday morning.
