Lego Storage Ideas

We just use the kids Little Tikes toy box, all Legos eventually end up in there. Although it is pretty hard to sort through all those Legos for one or two tiny ones and it ends up getting dumped pretty often. Sets get built, then destroyed and rebuilt into new things. I was at a Babies R Us/Toys R Us before Christmas and saw a big Lego guy head for $40it said you can put the Legos in the top and shake it and it filters the smaller ones through to the bottom and keeps other sizes on different trays inside. It was so adorable but they didn't really need one more gift! These are cute storage containers too: http://the-gadgeteer.com/2010/10/17/store-your-stuff-in-lego-brick-storage-boxes/

IMHO- storing is only half the lego problem...
and...here's the biggie....when the boys were young, and both played, I had a LARGE step2 brand baby/wading pool, long and rectangular-ALL building took place INSIDE that pool- ALL blocks stayed contained this way. literally tens of thousands. most times they'd sit on the edge and build stuff.
Now I have only one left who plays, in his room we had a big stack of those large building blocks made of cardboard.(they're approx.12"x4"x2")We used duct tape and created a wall taping the blocks lengthwise(duct tape on alternating sides) in a LARGE circle in his room- so no matter what 'shape' his building area needs to be,we can adjust the blocks- it's about 4" high, taped end to end-so ALL the legos are played with inside this corral- (I hate legos all over the floor)
he has a bin/shelf thing from target made for toys- a file box for the directions for all the sets(he never looks there) and some extra plastic bins to store the millions of pieces.

I used two of those clear underbed storage boxes with my boys' legos. We lived in a small place at the time and I used under the bed for storage. They liked to pull them out and build on the flat top of the boxes.

OOOOOO Yes legos, Brings back memories. Remember when they came in their own bucket type thing with a lid. Those were the days, Or when mom or dad came through and steped on one with their bare feet, and then you got yelled at for having them in the floor. Hurts like heck to step on one of those suckers.:rotfl:

For years the kids stored them in the 3 drawer Rubbermaid/Sterlite bins.

We had about three 3 drawer units. It was handy for them to garg a drawer to use to build and then too in extra pieces when cleaning up.

**One word to the new lego fans.....please find a large 3 ring binder with page protectors. Put all the new instrctioons sheets in page protectors. **

This is something we never did....kids started playing Legos in 1996. All the instructions were tossed into their top dresser drawer. Of course not they are torn, pages missing, etc.
We have hundreds of dollars of Legos and it would have been nice to have the actual instructions to make the original sets.

Of course the boys have tons of fun creating their own neat things...a Star Wars super fighter, etc.

My DS6 loves the sets. He puts them together and they go on a shelf. He also likes to play with them and make different things with the sets. He uses pieces from various sets to make new things. Once we cannot display them on his shelves (i.e. when a Star wars ship is combined with a power miners drill including pieces all over his bedroom floor), I take them apart and store them in bins by color. I put all the books in a bin. This way he can rebuild them when he wants to. I got the bins at Target a few years ago. They're stackable 6 x 12 x3 boxes. They were for Christmas ribbons. So I got them on sale after Christmas. FYI- a little off subject- went to the Lego store yesterday...50% off lots of sets: Star Wars, Power Miners, racing cars, Hero Factory, and more.

I've started to vacuum up whatever extra pieces are laying around on the floor after the kids were supposed to clean up. Maybe one day my Lego storage problem will be solved this way!

We do save the instruction books in a notebook. Also, I cut out the color picture from the front of each box and we store those too. Mainly because my ds likes the picture and wanted to save the boxes originally. Too big! So the cut out is a nice compromise.

For the most part, our Legos are in 2 giant clear bins and some special sets are in a couple of smaller bins. With 3 boys we have way too many Legos. :scared1:

For general lego storage.
This is just a small selection of the total lego stash.
The carts have wheels so they are easy to move around or the drawers can be removed if they just want one set or type.
I have a day care so I keep all different sizes and types.

For showing off DS's favorites/special creations.
The high shelves keep little ones from taking them apart.

We also keep all directions in a binder so he can recreate vehicles or sets that have gone into bulk bins.

What do you use for the shelves?

That's what we use, too. They work well because they're shallow, so it's easier for them to find the pieces they're looking for. Their sets are all thrown in together, they have so many we'd never be able to keep them all separate. They'll bring me their latest creations and Spongebob will be sitting in a Star Wars space ship or Darth Vader will be on a boat, it's pretty funny :)

FYI...never too old for legos.

My highschool sophmore got out his Legos to build "Shakespeare's Theater". He used many of the castle type rounded ledge pieces. It was awesome. The teacher loved it and wanted to keep it....like forever to have in her class as examples of how to make it using different things.
Ummmm...sorry teacher, we still use those Legos.

Now my girls are playing with them building different things than the boys ever did. Its fun to watch.

We store ours in rubbermaid type containers...the type that fit under beds. It's a great way to keep them handy, but out of sight.

The Giant yellow Lego head is about $29 at Walmart. Santa brought my son one. He has so much Lego its not even funny and he is only 8

So nice to know I'm not alone with this problem! We have two red cubes with divided trays in them to store the loose pieces -- we got them from Lego years ago for about $20, and I just looked them up again -- they're on Amazon for $250!!! All the sets are in various storage bins that have taken over the toy cupboard in the living room. I keep threatening to take control of them, but I haven't been able too! :)

We have 2 of the clear drawer sets like pictured above. They also have a couple lego boxes and under the bed bins. They are still all over! We keep them in the basement, which helps, but they still manage to sneak back to their bedroom and wind up on the floor.

I showed them how to keep all the instructions in a binder and keep the pieces separates, but they don't put them back that way, so that's their problem! I just don't vacuum that section of the basement very often!

We had a problem with LEGO all over the floor until my wife found these great GoGoSac's, which are play mats and toy storage solution all in one.

We have 3 of them as they are great, one for duplo & megabloks the other for Lego and the last we use for general toys or when we are going away. We love them & worth a look, pretty cheap and good quality. You can find them at GoGo&Co who produce them. I can't post a link to website as forum will not let me yet. They are great and have saved many a fight when lego clean-up comes in our house.

My son would like your vacuum cleaner bags.

I made a cool Lego storage case...
