This is the first year I am looking into getting one for ds8.
I have a few questions. It looks like the price is pretty solidly 49.99 across the board.
Do these sell out quickly and should I just pay full price now? Or can I wait and see if a deal comes up?
Do any stores typically discount them?
I live in Canada but very close to the border so I can order it from the States easily and pick it up over the border.
Thanks in advance for any ideas.:)

There are three different Lego Advent calendars:

City (firefighter theme this year) at $39.99 retail
Friends (girl themed set) at $39.99 retail
Star Wars at $49.99 retail

You can find these online and in stores when they have general store or Lego discounts for around 20% off. The Star Wars one is even more $$$ than last year. I ended up picking it up on Amazon for $40, now listed at $44.

There has been talk of the Friends set selling out, and indeed, it is no longer listed on Lego's website.

...forgot to add that the other two probably won't sell out right away. Often, you can find them discounted at Walmart, etc. after the holiday season. Historically there haven't been too many discounts prior to Dec 1 (when the calendar starts) at big box stores or the Lego store.

I haven't seen them sell out, but nor have I seen them go on sale. I have already purchased the Lego Friends Advent calendar because I was afraid that one might sell out. They are definitely fun for the kids - our Elf brings ours. If you have a store nearby you may be able to get it with the pick a brick bucket that they sometimes give out if you spend enough.

Wait for a better deal! Last year I almost gave up, then after searching around a bunch of different sites, Amazon finally dropped the price for me to high $20's. You can also leave it in your cart for a while and see if it goes down. I'd gotten them at Borders or Barnes and Nobel before with coupons, but I think they now exclude Legos.

I lucked out last year the week after Christmas I found a Star Wars Lego Advent calendar at Meijer. One box had been stuck in the food section and they had a discount coupon for one item that day, so I got it for about $20! So, that's what my sons are getting this year! (I make them flip a coin for odd/even days and they share one.)

2011 calendar only $19.99. If you don't mind the box saying 2011, it's just as fun, the year doesn't matter.

I also see Ebates has a TRU coupon for $10 off $50 Legos + 1% cash back

Good point. The Star Wars Lego calendar is just too expensive this year (2012). The price usually doesn't drop until after Chistmas and they can sell out. I went with a Playmobile advent calendar this year.

Unfortunately, that 2011 calendar says it's only available in stores, then doesn't let you search for a nearby store. Meanwhile, Toys R Us does have the StarWars one for 2012 on "sale" for a whopping $2 off! (they try to make it look like $12, but I've seen it in their stores for $49.99, therefore $47.99 is NOT $12 off... )

If you're sure you want it and you're not sure it will be available later, best bet might be to buy it at some place that has a 30 day price-match guarantee... then you have it now, and can maybe get a price adjustment later.

saw them at Barnes and Noble last weekend and they had sales going on in the store :goodvibes

Which set did B&N have? Honestly...I thought they went out of business. That was my go-to place with a 40% off coupon for the City sets...now my 7yo is big into the Star Wars sets, so we're forced to pay the bump in price, thank you George Lucas ; )

I bought the star wars one for my grandson last year at toys-r-us for 25% off on black Friday. I am going to wait again and hope for that because he loved it. I did pick up a playmobile set last year on clearance for $6 but he liked the Levis one so I will look for that too.

Are you thinking of Borders? They always had those 40% off coupons, but sadly they went out of business.

DS7 is in to SW as well. We saw the SW Lego Advent Calendar at Barnes & Noble this past Sunday. It was in a separate SW display with other items (actually it was on the floor under the table, so you might have to look around).

I got the star wars lego advent calendar when toys r us was having buy two lego sets and get one free. I pickes up two other bigger sets that I think he will like, so I got all 3 sets for $100.

If you want the Lego Friends calendar, buy it now. They cancelled production halfway through the run, so they have half as many as they should. I called 6 legos stores 2 weeks ago and every store already sold out of them. I ended up getting it on ebay for a little more than retail. It was never available on Lego's website. I've been checking for months. It's at the top of my DD7 list all year.

I saw this the other day at Barnes and Noble. DD joined their kids club (free) and they sent us a 30% off coupon. I can't see anywhere that Legos are excluded, so I'll try to swing by tomorrow and see if they still have them available. Last year I ended up buying the City for DD and Star Wars for DH, so I'm sure they'll both want their own sets this year too.

WOW.. you guys are awesome!! Thank you!!:thumbsup2
I'll look into all of the suggestions. I had thought of the 2011 one, because to be honest he couldn't care less what it says on the box.. he just wants the figures. I may go that route or wait for a sale. Regardless, it looks like I have many options. Thank you again.:)

I bought the 2011 Star Wars one last year the day after Thanksgiving for $27 at Target. I know it has gone up in price this year but I'd wait until then to see the sales.

Can you please report back and let us know if this is allowed? I have three to buy so that would be a big help!
