I'm sorry, but once you hold a flimsy styrofoam cup between your knees and take the lid off, you're responsible for your actions. And you certainly aren't deserving of almost $3 million!
It seems like the general motto in our society should be "It's always someone else's fault." They have to put warnings on plastic bags, "This is not a toy. Do not place over head." Seriously???? On a plastic coffee cup, "Caution! Contents hot!" Really???? What happened to common sense?
And in the OP's example, Disney is going to have to start posting warning signs at every ride queue. "Caution!! Standing in hot sun without enough liquids may cause dehydration and loss of consciousness!"
Sure, if said cup isn't heated to 185 degrees Fahrenheit!
And if the company that provided you with the aforementioned cup didn't have about 700 complaints preceding.
And if spilling the cup on yourself didn't land you in hospital for a week, requiring skin grafts.
That's not a reasonably expected consequence of holding a (not especially flimsy) Styrofoam cup between your knees in a stationary vehicle.
And by the way, she actually TRIED to settle for just the amount of her medical bills (a reasonable request in a country like the US where there is no socialized medicine). McDonalds refused to negotiate.
While a jury did award her $2.9 million, the judge drastically cut that amount to about $650,000. The case ultimately settled for about $500,000. (Even plaintiffs who win cases will sometimes end up settling for less money to avoid an appeal.) Her daughter said the mocking news coverage continued to haunt her family.

Seriously, people really need to do some research on the FACTS this story. And then have a bit of compassion for the woman. All she wanted was some help paying for her medical bills, from the company whose negligence injured her.

Thanks to this woman, we're all a bit safer ordering coffee from McDonalds. It never needed to be that hot, and it wasn't - at most other restaurants! (You can't heat it to anything even approaching that hot in a home coffeemaker, either.)
