I am in the throws of a nasty cold/allergies/sinus infection. not sure but I am stuffed up so bad.
My family is pretty nervous for me! I guess I am looking for advice. I am not usually a medication person but am will to make a VERY big exception this time!

achoo!

Go to an urgent care and get some antibiotics if youve been running a fever. There are plenty of over the counter cold/sinus meds. Ones with an antihistamine will make you tired, just fyi. Take them an hour before you get on the plane to curb your symptoms and decrease spread to others. Buy a surgical mask to wear on the plane if you are coughing so you don’t spread it to others as well. I hate it when people get on a plane snotting and hacking everywhere with no precautions. Sorry but true. Last thing I want is to come down with something on my vacation.

Lol. Also get some cough suppressant if you are coughing as well. Some cold meds have it included to just look at the ingredients on the back. You dont want to overdose on anything. A nasal decongestant should help with the stuffiness, an antihistamine will help with runny noses, and cough suppressant if you need it. SOme of them also have tylenol included for sinus pain.

In addition to what aliceindisneyland said, I'll add:
A neti pot (if you are into that) twice a day to clear congestion. This helps me a lot!
Olbas essential oil inhaler stick to help open up your nose/sinuses so you can breathe... can use it as often as needed.
Quentin capsules and Stinging Nettles (capsules or tea) help will allergy and hay-fever symptoms.
Honey, Lemon and Cayenne in hot water for cough or soar throat.
And, my favorite, a hot toddy just because it tastes good.

ooh I do have a neti pot but last time I used it I got an ear infection. Probably a coincidence, but the memory lingers....

Just to add that it depends on how high the fever is running. A low-grade fever (generally under 101) is pretty normal during a virus or cold. It means your body is trying to fight off something and it's actually good not to try to bring it down unless you're really uncomfortable. A higher fever might indicate a bacterial infection and that's when you might need antibiotics. If you have a viral infection, antibiotics won't do anything for it and a doctor likely won't prescribe them. Hope you feel better soon!

I agree with all the previous posts. When you are at the parks, go by Jamba Juice in DTD and get a smoothie of your liking with added boosters. Pack more medicine than you think you will need. Someone may come down with a cold too while you are there. Make sure you carry hand sanitizer and even a can of Lysol to spray everything down in your room so no one else in your party comes down with the cold. Stay hydrated. Flo's has a fruit platter (share to keep their immune system up), Pacific Wharf has yummy soups, etc. If you are feeling tired, go back to your room for a nap, or, get a seat on the train and ride it around the park until you feel like you can join your party again. I hope you feel better soon.

Please understand I am not providing any medical advice. Ask your medical provider for advice on your specific medical needs and appropriate treatments. That being said, when I get sick before a trip....

Afrin nasal spray. DO NOT USE IT MORE THAN 3 DAYS! However, it will get you through the worst days! This dries up your nose, and makes the "beans" (turbinates) in your nose shrink, so you won't be stuffled up.

Sudafed. The real stuff, not the "new"/fake stuff. Depending on where you live, it may require a prescription, or may be behind the pharmacy counter. This acts as a general decongestant (it dries you up). This will also help you avoid extra ear pain from fluid in your ears on the plane.

Neti Pot if you can handle it. I can't. But some weird people in the world seem to love it. (TEASING! I hate it, but I know plenty of people that love it, and I met a lot of them when I was working at an ENT office!)

Pay attention to what meds you are using--its pointless to use a cough suppressant with an expectorant. That's saying, "Help me get this crap out of my lungs, but don't let me cough it up!" It's a common mistake :)

Remember that Tylenol and Ibuprofen are two separate medicines. So, you can take both if you aren't taking another NSAID (like Aleve, Meloxicam, and other medicines for inflammation).

If you will be on vacation at the 2-week point of being sick, consider asking your medical provider for an antibiotic to use just in case, so you aren't stuck trying to find an urgent care that takes your insurance. My care team is pretty understanding about this, and willing to do it.

Don't forget the natural remedies--warm tea with or without honey can help open you up and calms coughs, and eucalyptus helps open up snuffled nasal passages.

Oh, and HYDRATE HYDRATE HYDRATE! Not drinking water won't dry you up, but will make you feel worse!

And soft, soft tissues. Like the $$$$ ones. Just suck it up and buy the good ones. And carry them with you in the parks.

Can't tell who has gone to DL with a cold our two, can we? Hahaha.

Hubs wanted to point out that you may want to be more aware of your touring style as well. So instead of running across the parks for your FPs, use MaxxPass, and try to do one land or area at a time to minimize the energy expenditure.

My husband got the flu on our trip last Fall. Worst-case scenario, take a day to just sit in the hotel and try to recuperate. It was hard on me being a mom with 3 young children and no help, but with a day to rest, my husband was able to get through the rest of the trip with only mild issues. Dayquil/Nyquil, nose spray, and cough drops will be your friend. But if you're coughing so much you can't keep control over your germ spreading, a quiet day in the hotel isn't so bad.

If you're needing to blow your nose all the time, don't buy tissue in the parks. It adds up fast--I remember the small tissue packs being like $2 in the parks. I was sick last September and went through those small tissue packs fast. Buy tissue from one of the quick marts near by or bring it from home.

Antibiotics do NOT work on colds; they ONLY work on bacterial infections. Agree with pp about the decongestant.....sudafed / PSEUDOEPHEDRINE is the ingredient that you should look for. It will not make you sleepy but will take care of nasal congestion. Careful about antihistamines, they can make you sleepy. Tea, zinc, vitamin C, etc are all good suggestions (and couldn't hurt! haha).

Ok , so the whole Neti Pot thing. I can't do a Neti Pot, but the Sinus Rinse

Saved my life!! Honestly, the best. Use the little packets that come with it. Go gently. Got my hubby off allergy shots and constant sinus infections.

The behind the counter mucinex d or sudefed for days and niquil for nights. But really the key is the behind the counter stuff. Mucinex d or Sudafed with a big glass of water. It will dry you out better than any other remedy.

I do not want to be THAT person!

Not only on the plane, but also in the parks! There are more guests than we know who are struggling with immune issues (e.g. chemo, autoimmune disorders, various diseases, etc.) who don't have the resistance that most other guests have. The OP's desire to not be "THAT person" is greatly appreciated!

Get the hard core stuff behind the counter. Mucinex is great (from behind the counter, not the stuff in the aisle). If that isn't for you, take something at night that will make you sleep and during the day, use any over the counter decongestant. You may need to go nap during the day. Don't worry about it. You'll enjoy the rest of the time much more if you get enough rest. Keep drinking water/gatorade/vitamin water all day.
