Ok, I've read lots about not leaving things in your car. But if we stop at Target and Costco on the way from the airport, are those relatively safe for that?? I know once I get to Aulani I will NOT want to go back out later that day!! :teeth:

We do that often, and I wouldn't worry about that. Our issue is fitting it all in the car, but we get creative! Kids have case of water under their feet in the back, maybe something on their lap, etc...

I've done it where we checked in, then I ran to Target first day. I was like the walking dead in the store. Laughing, I told the check out lady that I had been up nearly 24 hours and it was like midnight to my body! That was a trip that we just took carry on bags, so didn't even pack things like shampoo & toothpaste, so I was picking up toiletries and drinks & breakfast food to get us through the first day. Then the next morning DH and I made our first big Costco run right when they opened.

I agree, you will likely want to settle in and relax, so to me it's safe (and I lived on Oahu, so know other than what you're talking about, no we don't leave anything valuable in our car ever). Only thing we do leave is if we go out for the day, we usually have a small soft sided cooler with bottled water in it. Not worth anything, so that's fine in the car. Especially when we go to the flea market, we are hot and thirsty!

Thanks @happymommy! Great info! I hadn't thought about not having room for what we buy....guess we'll have to wing it based on what car we end up with. We may go minivan again. I despise them, but it was sooo much cheaper than an SUV for our Alaska trip, and you definitely have lots of room. Can't wait!! :)

It's relatively safe. Someone did try to pickpocket us outside Target.

Yes, north shore is very high crime. We got our car broken into at the PCC. They have gangs there that watch for cars & are in and out in seconds.

Oh man! now I'm worried. We are staying up there on Saturday night and have surf lessons Sunday morning, were just going to store our luggage in the car during them. I have no idea what to do w luggage if we don't do that. Advice?

Do not leave anything in your car on the north shore. I lived in Kailua (on base) but had a friend living in Hauula, and it is high crime. She felt so unsafe that after a couple months, although they had an A frame house with the ocean as their back yard, they moved on base.

Most hotels and motels will hold your luggage for you after you check out. I'd give wherever you're staying a call and see if they will too, that would be much safer than leaving it in the car.
