Ok, we are in the home stretch of when we leave for a long overdue vacation, and I woke up in the middle of the night with a cold. Typical headache, swollen eyes, drainage into my throat. I refuse to be sick for my vacay, so anyone with miracle cures, please help.

My ds, 7 months, also has been coughing, I know not much I can do for him besides humidifier???

Thanks!

Well, the good news is you still have ten days...

As they say, if you treat a cold it will last seven days and if you don't treat a cold it will last a week!

Ha! Very true! Hopefully it will run its course by the time we leave!

I know..I know...some people say it is a complete hoax. But, I take Airborne (or the Walgreens brand) at the first sign of cold and it always seems to work for me. I keep it in our travel bag just in case something happens on a trip. I've heard Zycam is great too. But you have to take it ASAP or it won't work. Our pharmacist liked zycam. Hope you feel better!!

I use it too and it also works for me, but only if I catch it quickly. by two days in forget it - it has to run it's course.

I only last week found it here in Canada. For the past few years my parents have stockpiled it coming home from FL and give us boxes and boxes of it. The other ones don't work for me - Cold Fx, extra Vit C, eccinacea (or however it's spelled)...only Airborne. Good luck, but even if you're stuck with it for a week at least it will be over with before your trip and you'll be extra healthy since you've just paid the piper. Weird logic I know but it works for me.

Oh, also mind over matter. I always find if I accept the cold it hits hard, if I refuse it I always have an easier go of it, but I have to really be in a strong mindset.

Off of someone's recommendation on these boards, I started taking Dan Active Immunity every day. I had a cold at the time and it went away much faster than my typical cold. My boys have also been taking it. They have still gotten colds, but they don't seem as bad. I hear it works wonders as a preventative.

I always take zinc with anti-oxidiants and it seems to shorten the duration of the cold for me. Of course I do the typical things as well - chicken noodle soup, sleep, vitimin c, etc. They help mentally if not physically.

Hope you feel better soon.

Every time I got a cold it would turn into full blown bronchitis. Finally my doctor told me that I might have mild allergies, during season changes. Instead of testing me for it, he suggested the following:take sudafed and mucinex.

The sudafed keeps your nose from dripping down your throat. (which inflames the throat and lungs) Cough Expectorant Mucinex is pill form of Robitussin, and keeps your cough gentle and productive. I haven't had bronchitis in four years.

My DD3 got bronchitis A LOT, her first two years and the pediatrician also suggested allergies. When her nose starts running I give her walgreens - claritin for kids and she hasn't been sick in over a year.

Good luck and have a great trip!

You should be find as long as its not a sinus infection. Those tend to last for a while. You have 10 days, it should be over by then. Drink lots of orange juice, try not to talk that much, and eat some chicken soup. Make sure you and your son eat some healthy things for the next ten days. And of course, get some rest! I hope you have a wonderful vacation.:thumbsup2

Agree w/ the PPs- as long as it's a standard, run of the mill cold virus, it should run its course within 7-10 days. Get as much fluids going as possible for both you and the baby. I would suggest honey for the baby, but he's too young. It really stinks that there's not much out there for him! If he's congested at all, do the whole saline and suction thing. They've come out recently with saline nasal mists vs. the drops that they have had for years. It's in a small aerosol can with a funny long skinny tip thing. I recently got some and one of my sons actually LAUGHS when I spray it. This is the kid that usually kicks, squirms, screams, goes all twisty-turny when I used to use the saline drops. He still hates the suctioning, but at least part of the battle has been relieved! :thumbsup2

Hope you both feel better ASAP! Enjoy your vacation!
