Yesterday I took the baby in for her four month check up. She just started with a cough the night before, a little one. We were expecting it since the rest of the kids seemed to have one on and off for the last week. We'll he says she's got a viral bronchitis (I listened to her lungs and couldn't hear anything:confused3 , I must be losing my touch), so he put her on anitbiotics. Well her cough got worse over night and now I have four more kids hacking up a lung this morning. I hate putting them on antibiotics and I'm not sure if I should be taking them to the walk in clinic. My Dr. was able to get two in today (the one with asthma and the one with a fever) so I guess I'll see what he has to say. I'm assuming if it's viral though that it should pass without antibiotics.
The next problem is my Dr said to ask behind the counter for a decongestant for the baby and the toddler (who currently has a mild cough). I told him they pulled them from the market and he said that they still have them behind the counter. I went to two different pharmacies and they both didn't have any. Now I don't know what to give them for the flight. He said that they will need a decongestant to fly since they have the extra mucous they will experience a lot of discomfort without anything. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I think before next trip I will up our isolation window to two weeks instead of just one:rolleyes1 .

It's not a decongestant but it's an antihist., but Benadryl (or simliar) will help dry up the the mucus. We have really bad allergies and our ped. used to say that the decon and the antihist work TOGETHER to give relief. So if you can't find the decon, you could still try the other to dry them up on the flight and give them some relief. Some people are afraid it will make them hyper, but as you aren't looking for something to necessarily put them to sleep then that wouldn't be your biggest priority. I've traveled with a cold/virus/allergy/sinus headache and it's really miserable. The pressure is awful which means a hurting little one. So I'd ask your ped if he/she thought the antihist was a good idea. Otherwise, he/she will just have to prescribe a decon for your child.

ALSO!!! Get the INFANT vicks rub (in the little tub/jar) and put that across the bridge of the child's nose (do not use the adult formula as they contain different things). This will bring a LOT of relief. Also, keep them WELL hydrated this week and when flying and that will help the body flush the illness out--that's why all the mucus is forming, to rid the body of it.

Maybe right before you board get a warm washcloth (or ask the flight attendant for it when you board) and use it for the steam so the child can have that relief, too.

Think of the types of things you did while you were pregnant and couldn't take things--those are the same things you can do for your child.

Good luck!

I feel your pain, I leave on Friday and my DD is on an antibiotic, and came home today with a fever, and not feeling well.:scared1: I hope she gets better real soon!!!

Your pediatrician should have samples of anything you might need. Call them up and let them know you need it and then pick it up. They get them free and are to be given out!!!

Thanks. I have never thought of using Bendryil. I have some liquid up on the shelf I'll have to check and see if it has an infant dose. She really does not seem sick at all. She's not grumpy or uncomfortable and only coughing a little so hopefully by the time we leave she'll be fine.
The two I took to the Dr. today ended up on antibiotics also and inhalers. If any more need meds I'm going to look like a travelling pharmacy going through security.
Does anyone have any suggestions for keeping anitbiotics cold during a flight. All I can currently think of is frozen water packs but they wouldn't make it through security. Do you think I would be able to get some ice from any of the stores after security and put it in a ziplock bag with their meds?

Ask Dr. to write a note that the antibiotics must be kept cold and that you will be traveling with icepacks for a MEDICAL reason. You shouldn't have problems then. Another idea is to get your antibiotics broken into 2 prescriptions. One that the pharmacist mixes and one that is dry and you add water to when you arrive. We did that a LONG time ago when DS was really little (we had a long flight scheduled) and it worked like a charm. Pharmacist told us exactly how much water to add.

Good luck and hope everyone gets well soon.

:scared1: DD is now throwing up. We leave on Friday!!!! I sure hope its gone by then. She came home today early from school not feeling well, was fine all day, the at bed time she stared throwing up.:scared1:

I hope she's feeling better. pixiedust: Here's some pixiedust for a quick recovery.

Just remember the most important thing I learned and wish someone would have told me...when you take your kids to the dr and they are sick and put on medicine, it often gets worse before it gets better. I remember freaking out b/c my DD did not seem better after being at the dr during the day and when I called they said give it a little time! Boy I wish someone would have pointed out that obvious piece of knowledge to me sooner!
Hang in there, they will all be okay!
