Learned some new things here in MI!!

They didn't think it was funny if I held up my fist and tried to show them where Cleveland was.

What do Floridians hold up?

Interesting thread. I grew up on the Canadian side of Michigan and had relatives there so we'd go over almost every weekend!

I forgot about Faygo Redpop!! And Vernors!

I also knew about the mitten and MI-left!

Mamma4U - I'm with you on the weather. We lived in Atlanta the last four years after living in Canada all my life. We are back and I'm not looking forward to:

- filling my windshield washer fluid in the car all the time. I used about 1 jug in 4 years in Atlanta!
- I hate how dirty my poor car gets. You could just dust it off with a swifter in GA! (not really, but cars didn't get as dirty as they do here)
- watch out for those drippy boots in the car. The space under DS's car seat was used for storage, my purse, etc. Don't do it unless you want a big pile of wet gunk from drippy boots all over your stuff!!
- letting the car warm up before going anywhere. I rather wait for it to cool down :teeth:

A couple of other things you probably already know about:

- taking off your shoes at anyone's door. This is a result of the weather. However, they still take them off in the summer :confused3
- indoor shoes for school!
- putting away your summer clothes so you have enough room in your closet for your winter wardrobe!
- static cling...........and shocks from the winter cold.

Enjoy the UP!

I have been up there as I had relatives in Lewiston. Very nice place in the summer :sunny:

Yes!! Shoes must always come off. There's either mud, sand, or snow on them.
I had to ask about the indoor shoes for school!
I had to buy storage containers for all of our now rotating wardrobes.
I never even used fabric softener until we moved here.
I used to wash my car every week and it was always spotless. Now my poor mini-van looks like it's been off-roading!
We had to buy heavy duty floor mats for the car that sort of collect the melted snow.
And my DH recently paid a small fortune to have a remote car starter installed!

One more thing. I am always either too hot or too cold. When I go from the house to the car to the store I'm freezing. But when I'm actually in the car or in the store I'm sweating to death. So then I've got to take everything off and my cart is full of coats, mittens, scarves, etc.

Last winter I went out one day in just a sweatshirt. My DM says "It's 15 degrees out!! Your going to freeze to death." I said "No I won't because in the store it's 90 degrees!" No happy medium.

It's all in good fun though. :goodvibes

We love Vernors but I didn't think it was american not to sure where it was from really I figured it was a British thing.
Tell me about it! I'm from California, so to me, the Midwest should be in the vicinity of Utah!

Exactly if you look at a map of the US that would pretty much be the mid west as I would call it not Michigan and Illinois etc but hey they were old and didn't know any better LOL.

:rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Isn't that the truth!!

Funny, it's the other way around in the summer too. Way too cold in the stores, but hot outside. :confused3 ;)

I gave up on car mats and use Beach towels. They take a little more time to put down but you can just pull them up nad wash them when they get too wet or grungy.

Here is another one.

When I went to college at WMU (Western Michigan Univeristy) in Kalamazoo (west side) we used to "steal" the food trays from the cafeteria to go sleding on. :cold: They finally got wise and let us check them out so they would get them back! :goodvibes

Here a bit of trivia for you. Vernor's was the first "pop" made and it came right from Detroit.

I have lived in MI all my life and love it. I hate snow but it comes with the territory. The seasons are great, and I love to bundle up when it is cold. Plus, no hurricanes or earthquakes. There is no other place I'ld rather live.

I remember when I was a kid we used to stand in front of the old Vernor's sign on Woodward while wacthing the Thanksgiving day parade. :cold:

Very cool I did not know Vernors was made there we love it nice and tart and a strong ginger taste to it.

Hey, don't forget about Better Made potato chips to go along with that Vernors' .

I learned something new this morning....that no matter how much a Mayor lies, cheats, parties & blows the taxpayer's money, that he can still be re-elected! I am still in shock that the voters in Detroit picked him again, after all of his documented escapades. :confused3 :sad2:

Boy you're not kidding!!! Still can't believe he got back in! :confused3

I know! I went to bed breathing a big sigh of relief that Hendrix was ahead, then I wake up to see he lost. :confused3 At least Currie was voted out, thank goodness!

Well it's hard to get GOOD Mexican food up here. The authentic restraunts tone it down a LOT because apparently ppl native to here can't take anything hotter than Taco Bell. (my home town was close to TX ;) )

I learned that ppl really like bland boiled meat and sausages up here. lol

I also REALLY miss Sonics... apparently that restraunt is just a 'red state' thing, because there aren't any here in the midwest (besides southern Ohio) or the New England states! :confused3

I learned that even though most of Detroit is a very run down city, there are still some 'nice' parts like the DIA and Greektown. :)

I learned one only has to go to Bronners to get in a Christmas spirit. :wizard:

I learned that there are a LOT of malls here (I came from a place where you had to go 80 miles in any direction to get to one  ) But, only a few really good ones like the South-something mall (the one with the glass pyramid) , and the Great Lakes Crossing mall.... Briarwood use to be good until they got rid of any 'fun' and unique store in the whole place.. Now it's just one big clothing store.. :rolleyes1

:cool1: Yea, Currie was voted out, I just glanced at the TV this morning and didn't see that. Well thank goodness I say.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Please say it isn't so. I haven't wacthed any news yet this morning (PBS and Playhouse DInsey all morning) so I had no idea. When we went to be Hendrix was a head.

Man this bits. I am so happy I no longer work in the city of Detroit. I am done with that place. When DH and I were in grad school at Wanye state we lived on campus, and we voted for Archer (and meet thim a few times) he was the only good mayor Detroit had in my whole life times and he had enough! The city is so currupt! Ugh!

Now I wonder if the millage in RO passed!

jekajekalynn, have you ever tried any of the places in mexican village (right at the foot of the ambastor bridge. We like Xchiomecios (so didn't spell it right) we used to eat there weekly when we lived at WSU.

Eww yuck I prefer Hostess Ketchup chips with my Vernors. Up here Vernors is made by Cadbury AKA Pepsi.
