Learned some new things here in MI!!

I started reading this thread and thinking about "Up North" so I called Cherry Repubic and ordered some Sour Cherry Patches.

Anyone like these?

They have "Michigan turns" down here in Florida, too. 1/2 of Michigan seems to be down here right now. I had a fellow Michigander doing 20 on the highway in front of me today. :teeth:

Well, I don't remember seeing them anywhere else. DH freaked out when we moved here--he's British and thinks we ought to replace all these Michigan lefts with roundabouts. :teeth:
Brighton put in a roundabout on Main Street & no one seems to be able to use it correctly :rotfl:

As for MI U turns( MI left) WE have some in ohio but I honestly think MI came up with idea and ohio just copied it. I honestly do think the whole MI U turn thing is fairly new as I remember them coming about same time as our Mall came about in Holland and me turning 15 so I could take drivers ed. I could ask my dad as he works with this kind of stuff everyday. Yes he is a Husky (MTU) Grad.

Now could someone take pity on this misplaced Spartan and send her A REAL pasty from UP. I to this day so want to finsh the drive to Houghton that My parents and i started out on but got stranded in Canada with a broken Van.

Okay please don't take offense at this because I mean it in the nicest way possible, but..........ARE YOU NUTS????!!!
Please tell me what it is that you love about snow. You must mean just the playing in it part right? I refuse to drive in it. It scares me.
Like I said... Los Angeles rush hour traffic? No problem. Snow and ice? No way. I saw someone spin out last year and it scared me so bad I was shaking and crying and it wasn't even us that spun out!!

I agree with chipmuknfan I love the snow and all of it. I love shovelling it driving in it and playing in it. I just love the snow and all it has to offer I especially like getting the kids together and watching the first snowfall of the season it is so peacefull then we go run around in it for a bit after it accumulates on teh ground enough. Also how can you not love toboganning I mean really there is not a better outdoor winter activity than that.

The first snowfall of the season last year was pretty exciting for my family and I. We went out in our p.j.'s and took pics! My twin girls age 4 (now 5) had never seen snow before! But after about 4 months some of the excitement wore off. :goodvibes
The kids do love to play and go sledding. DH desperately wants a snowmobile. And even I'll admit it is pretty. Still scared to drive in it though and wish it was a tad shorter. And too many gray days. Made me a little depressed. Maybe I need one of those lights I hear about. ;)

Oh I agree. If winter wasn't so long I really wouldn't mind it so much. Since fall is so late in coming this year I hope things might be better. If winter was only the actual calander times (Dec 18 to March 20th) I think I could handel it. However it is normally more like Mid Oct to May and that is way to long. (so far this year we are coming out ahead. It was lovely today.

Funny, I went to school in Michigan for a year, and everyone would hold up their hand and ask where I was from. They didn't think it was funny if I held up my fist and tried to show them where Cleveland was. (Go on, make a fist - it resembles Ohio, no?) :)

LOL! I used to live in Cleveland, and had a few Detriot /other area of MI friends.

A fist does look like Ohio!

That is really cool, thanks for posting the link! When I said that Woodward and Telegraph were Michigan lefts, I didn't know Telegraph was the 1st Michigan left!!!!! Pretty cool history lesson. I hadn't realized it was a real phrase, just though we called them it all the time. I guess with Detroit being the motor city that makes sense!

Wasn't the very 1st strech of paved highway in Detroit also (Davidson I think.) I bet that would be on that site. I might look into it more.

See I wish we only had 2 seasons I hate the summer and the heat and humidity I don't mind spring if it weren't for the allergies LOL. I love winter and fall is ok to as it is getting colder then. So I would love a short Fall and loooonnnngggg winter. My Dw was offered a job working for Disney when we were there on our honeymoon and I can say thankfully she turned it down as I couldn't imagine a winter and christmas without snow that would kill me.

Hey, can someone inform me about the finger/location thing? LOL, thanks.

Sure~! Hold up your left hand. Put your fingers together with your thumb moved just slightly out, like a mitten. Now your hand is the lower peninsula of Michigan.

Michiganders, as we are called, often display their hand to show someone where they live. :)

Put a finger slightly above your wrist on the same side of the hand as your thumb, that's where I live. Now move your finger to the middle knuckle on your pointer finger, that's where our "up north cabin" is located.

"North of Detroit, Way south of Heaven"-Michigan's own Kid Rock

Don't forget about Yoopers, Trolls and Fudgies!

To the OP, I moved years ago with my DH to the Cleveland area, and although driving in the snow is always a challenge, we have really enjoyed the Midwest. We live in a town South of Ann Arbor now, and love it! We have the most beautiful house, backing up to woods, which in California, would be a few million dollars! :flower:

I've lived here most of my life and am still scared to drive in the white stuff especially the first few snowfalls. By March tho you'll be driving in it like it was the Indy 500.

Did anyone tell the OP what our state symbol is.....the orange construction barrel!! :teeth:

Ok sorry if this sounds strange but I just have to ask. Why do you call Michigan and Illinois etc in the MID WEST it isn't even close to the west. Up here the west doesn't start till you hit Alberta Manitoba and Sasatchewan are Central Canada and Ontario and Quebec and the rest are all the Eastern Provinces I could never figure this out it seems odd to me that some place so far east is considered mid west. So please could somone enlighten this poor Canuk... :teeth:

When the US expanded from the original 13 states, they went westward. This area became known as the midwest, as opposed to the east. It's a matter of US history, I'm afraid! :flower:

Ok well somone needs to straighten out the history books down there to correctly convey just where you guys are located LOL.

Tell me about it! I'm from California, so to me, the Midwest should be in the vicinity of Utah! :sunny:
